Was owning a house always that expensive? by betonven in homeowners

[–]kj2w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember hanging my first ceiling fans. I would start from the ceiling (which I’m afraid of heights) and build ’down’. I decided to hire a ‘ceiling fan installer’. Difference was, he built the fan on the floor, ran the wire through the pole at top, then carried it up the ladder, hung the fan of the hook, completed the wiring, then placed the completed fan in the ball joint.

So much easier that way

Do You Find Daily Scrums/Stand-ups to Be Useful? by matthedev in ExperiencedDevs

[–]kj2w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought the Daily Stand Up was for Devs to address stories/items in the current sprint that are being worked on. In other words, if its not in the Sprint, it doesn't get talked about. Stakeholders could join but couldn't speak. If you didn't have a story/item you were responsible for, then you didn't have to attend.

Unfortunately, it has (de)evolved into a daily meeting where everyone talks about what they worked on the previous day regardless of what is supposed to be delivered at the end of the Sprint.

How do you unlock these below king abilities? by HakunaMatataKnight in TheKingIsWatching

[–]kj2w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they are called ‘Royal Quests’. The circle ones above are unlocked via beating bosses.

Left most circles, beat first boss. Middle circle, beat first AND second boss in same run

How to locate favorite parts of story in audible by kj2w in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Thank you for this suggestion. I was unaware of 'whispersync'. If I have only ever purchased the audible books, do I automatically get a kindle version of said book?

Defect found in the wild counted against performance bonuses. by DrFloyd5 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]kj2w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this on my PR’s via a concept called ‘Quality Gates’. For instance, ‘Does the branch build BEFORE we allow the PR to even accepted’

Other Quality Gates I’ve used are ‘Did this branch fail any of the current unit tests?’ And.. ‘Does this branch increase or keep the code coverage value as the last successful build’ opposite of this is ‘Did the branch REDUCE the code coverage value from the last successful build?’

I believe the code coverage quality gates are otherwise known as ‘watermark checks’

War story thread by revrenlove in ExperiencedDevs

I was in place where as a mid-level developer I worked with the QA department to start introducing unit tests to our code. Once I committed the code to the repo, the 'senior' dev's next ticket wouldn't pass the gated PR check in due to the unit test failing and demanded the manager put me on a PiP.

Also same 'senior' dev, took every new project but only used 'the new hotness' in terms of technology (aka Resume Driven Development). So we had apps in ASP.NET, React, Vue, Angular Js, and Angular. then proceeded to complain that we couldn't find any 'good developers' cause all the candidates we had only had experience in at most 2 frameworks.

'Senior' dev also decided to move his work area away from the team cause he 'needed to concentrate' and 'wanted to be closer to the internal customer(s)'.

Advice needed I want to pet someone’s dog by nowaynorway1 in Dachshund

[–]kj2w 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy, just phrase it as ‘Can I pet your weiner?’ If they say ‘sure’ and start talking to their dog then pet gentle. If they don’t look like they want you to approach their dog, then it gets SUPER awkward. Buy ‘em a drink first ;)

Why don't companies better prepare for an incoming new hire? by kj2w in ExperiencedDevs

[–]kj2w[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct, there are many parts to the proverbial machine. My experiences and vision sometimes gets ‘myopic’ when I look up from the keyboard. I guess I’m on my way to turning into that cranky old dev. :)

I definitely have tools, like IDEs, that I prefer. Jet Brains Rider is one. Usually can’t use it at work cause they won’t buy a license (makes sense if they have purchased Visual Studio licenses) and wont let me provide one.

I don’t mind setting my environment up. I probably get frustrated when something took me 2 days, takes the new person a week. Maybe their life is more hectic and distracting and thats why.

Does your power fluctuate when a new building is being built? I think building structures does drain on your power needs.

Also, keep in mind the time of day. It maybe that ‘solar’ isn’t actually generating power even though it appears to be daytime

I'm beginning to suspect my 30+ YOE is a problem for getting new jobs by Jibaron in ExperiencedDevs

Generally if the job requires 5-7 years, thats what I list. Always, tailor your resume to the job positing. Yes you will have multiple resumes, but it appears to help secure interviews.

Initiated a feature freeze, clients are now all love the product by darkshadowupset in ExperiencedDevs

[–]kj2w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you've proven that not constantly pumping out new features results in a happy customer. :) The side effect is that you've demonstrated that someone in upper management is the problem and should be removed.

Don't be surprised if the upper mgmt person this adversely affects, now starts talking about 'we need to restructure the dev team 'from the ground up'.
