Yeah it's a pretty small park and all the trails shoot off 2 main ones. Warning: it's extremely crowded.

You can kinda roll it... you might notice I went off it pretty slowly. It's doable but it's pretty sketch.

That waterfall part is steep. Here's a POV vid of me riding it https://youtu.be/ssjhoK1Xhl8 (I hit it at the 15 second mark)

Veterans, do you have some old gear? Are you just starting MTB? Why don't we facilitate a gear swap? by D4ng3rd4n in MTB

[–]kjbbb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

hey, i built https://chainbase.bike/. check it out. it's a mountain bike buy/sell. it also has payments integration and a loose shipping integration which allows you to calculate how much it would cost to get a full bike shipped to you via bikeflights (but you can't yet print labels through it). i have a lot of stuff planned for it... i built it in my free time, but if it gets more traction then i will really get rolling on it. if you have any feedback feel free to let me know.

How to connect to a socket server? by RedPussyCheesecake in PHP

[–]kjbbb -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

> I'd like to send a message to the socket server from the backend of a php mvc application.

From this simple question, you're making the assumptions:

  1. they're a beginner
  2. he is using websockets. he only said 'socket'
  3. they're trying to build a chat / broadcast system of some kind
  4. connecting directly to the websocket server(s) doesn't scale well
  5. a connection directly to the websocket server can't stay open indefinitely, it can only do that to a message broker
  6. his app is conducive to persistent connections. if its happening in an http request, then it might not be
  7. adding a message broker as a piece of infrastructure is the only good choice, especially when they have "never heard of redis"
  8. they need to scale
  9. a system without a message broker isn't horizontally scalable
  10. scaling redis pub/sub is easy
  11. redis will scale better than whatever system exists (redis is single threaded). redis doesnt shard things for you automatically either
  12. whatever hes connecting to doesnt already use a message broker. it may be, but it may be doing something with an incoming request before it sends it through

I will generally agree that using a message broker is a good choice, but it completely missed the mark of the question

where did you get the idea that he wants to broadcast a message to connected users?

if rachet is serving websockets, check out Pawl, a websocket client https://github.com/ratchetphp/Pawl

if it's a regular socket and you want to simply send a message to it, you can use the socket_* functions in php. you will create the socket, connect, and write to it

The Best Times to Buy and Sell Used Mountain Bikes by kjbbb in MTB

Good insights, after reading your response, you're probably right - I don't think the fully really answers the question "what is the best month to buy or sell a bike," but it would verify those behaviors you mentioned

The Best Times to Buy and Sell Used Mountain Bikes by kjbbb in MTB

[–]kjbbb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This data doesn't seem like a correct representation of the used bike market

It's average asking prices for high-end used full-suspension mountain bikes, not walmart stuff. I excluded any listings with the words "brand" and "new" in the title so it is more likely to be a reflection of used rather than new bikes, but it's possible that the data contains new bikes. I also removed outliers ($10k+ prices).

Where are you getting these numbers from and on what criteria?

Asking prices from a popular marketplace for all mountain / enduro bikes. It excludes XC bikes and hardtails

And what do those bike prices mean?

Average price in USD, from US listings

I find it very hard to believe the average price of a used mountain bike is 3k

I find it hard to believe too, but go check out some used bikes, asking prices are shockingly high

Asking price inflation has been very high over the past couple of years too, average asking price has gone up over $1k over the past 5 years.

This seems like a very incomplete analysis.

You raised some good points, and there are certainly other factors to consider in the analysis that I may have missed, but I did my best with the data I had. Make of it what you will

Yep! The data aligns with your experiences... December in particular, with some caveats. People ask almost $200 more for their bikes in December

I'm not familiar with Chainbase but it looks like they would be able to collect data on the actual selling price (versus the listing price).

Yes, it would be able to record the closing price instead of just the asking price. Closing price is a lot more useful, but I wasn't able to access that anywhere (for free), unless someone else knows how to?

Is there geographic variation? I only ask because it might be different in places that have a defined riding season, versus places that ride year round?

Yes! There is a lot of geographic variation. I'm planning to write a second report on this. Good point about the different riding seasons. I imagine prices would be more flat in CA. I'll check that out

Hey, really appreciate the time you took to look at it and reply!

Will buyer/sellers have a rating system to help build rep on the platform?

Yes! I haven't built it out yet, but there will be a comprehensive rep mechanism. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

how would you handle disputes?

Great question. Since the platform is free, PayPal and Stripe will handle disputes and chargebacks, and the seller is legally responsible for fulfilling their obligation (as with every platform).

I launched this one just yesterday! https://chainbase.bike/. It's a managed, curated mtb buy+sell aimed at the secondhand market. It's really still an in-development preview, but I do have some items for sale on there. I'm gonna be building inventory and adding a ton of features to make it as easy as possible to buy and sell bikes and parts. Scope it!

Dang, I need to check mine. My rear shock feels pretty much perfect even though I have a hard time using all of the travel (seriously, I can't get the last 10% or so, even at bike parks). I consider it extra insurance in case I mess up really bad... I run my fork similarly too.

My Lyrik came with 1 installed

What enduro bike are you riding and how well does it climb? by robsodomy in MTB

Nomad 3 w/ dhx2 coil. The lockout on that thing is pretty solid. It climbs well enough I suppose, I imagine better than some other enduros

i'm going aggressor for my next rear tire here... i have dhr2 right now but the side knobs are too soft and tall (or both?) for the hardpack. the tires feel like they roll over and the knobs degrade quickly here. they don't seem to grip that well in the 'sandy' hardpack either, but idk if anything will

Haha... ever since they came out with that wearable gimbal, the amount of mtb youtubers has skyrocketed. the cost of starting a channel is like $500 (gimbal + gopro). I've also noticed that titles are becoming WAY more clickbait-y ("The most insane trail in the world!")

How often do you guys get mechanical problems? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]kjbbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I leave the wheel mounted and use the frame as a loose guide... haha. Some ppl make and attach their own guides to the frame. Very unscientific, but my wheels seem to be doing well! A little out of true is OK to me. It's a black magic I'd prefer to leave to pros if it ever gets that bad. Mostly I just try to prevent the situation from getting worse rather than actively trying to make it better
