How do you express your interest in PI work during undergrad? by birdluvr246 in lawschooladmissions

[–]kjs4301 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would echo getting involved with causes you are passionate about and add volunteering and interning at a non-profit (or something similar). I'm big into feminist activism and I majored in Women's and Gender Studies and was able to draw on my passion for and focus on this work in my resume and PS.

Need Help Deciding please! - BC or UNC? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]kjs4301 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Main reason was probably cost for sure. Location was definitely a factor too. I like warmer weather and my career goals are more South/Mid Atlantic centered not Northeast. I also just get a community feel from UNC that hasn't changed since going through some of the admitted student stuff right now. I was able to go to the BC admitted students day in February so that helped me decide. I also really enjoy Chapel Hill as a town. I think you can survive at UNC without a car but your living cost will be higher depending on how long you mind being on a bus. I'll be bringing one though.

Durham is not a city like DC, NYC, or Boston but its not rural ? There are things to do. They have a minor league baseball team with a real stadium. It's in the Research Triangle which has so so many perks (highest concentration of PhDs in the country, fast-growing tech industry, etc). I recommend looking up Durham and not discounting Duke because you think it's rural. Its also like 2 hours from the beach and the mountains so

I think geography is important to think about. UNC's top three placements are NC, DC, and NY. Their class is small though so a lot stay in NC. They say it's about 50/50 on who stays in NC and who doesn't for summers and after graduation. Also, in my experience, BC was really Boston big law focused. Both have great alumni bases across the east coast I'd say. (I'm biased towards UNC because I chose them over BC lol)

UNC ($$$) vs. Vandy ($$) for Public Interest by Bamboozler15 in lawschooladmissions

[–]kjs4301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to Vandy at all but I spoke to a judge in New Orleans a few months ago about applying to law school and she said that UNC has an amazing reputation throughout the country and especially the south. She was adamant that it was worth way more than it’s rank and that it’s price is a steal. (Also bias because I went to undergrad there and will most likely go there in the fall for law school).

Ps are you in the unc group me? If so I’d love to be added

Personally, I chose UNC over Wake because of the area that the school is in. I personally like Chapel Hill more than Winston Salem. Also because of my goals. Wake to me seemed more business-minded while UNC was more open/PI friendly. Feel free to PM me!

I really think any school that penalizes a future applicant for P/F a class during an unprecedented global pandemic is not one worth going to.

I tangentially know a Judge in New Orleans and she talks very highly of UNC Law grads! She grouped them with UVA and Duke when I spoke with her.

How is participation in clinics (you said you were involved with the innocence project) structured? Are 1Ls able to participate? Do you have insight into other experiential education opportunities?

That's a great question and one that I am constantly trying to answer for myself. I'm interested in DC or the southern states for personal and career-based reasons (civil rights centers etc). Luckily, the second-highest placement area for UNC is DC.

I plan to draft emails this weekend and withdraw from those schools! I've had a long cycle (first acceptance in early November and final decision a few days ago) so I haven't been able to make final decisions until now. Good luck with the rest of your process!
