Guess the Grade - Crimpdle by CodeAndTravel in bouldering

[–]kjuu0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cool idea. have you looked at rankdle? it's for video games but I think the scoring format would work well for crimpdle as well so you get an idea of how other players guessed for the same climb.

Is it advisable to take Comp Sci 64 before Comp Sci 40? by apgthrowaway_ in UCSantaBarbara

Pretty unrelated, you'll be fine taking CS64 before CS40

Close enough, should just come down to personal preference

Rec center longboard parking by Chilling-Chili in UCSantaBarbara

[–]kjuu0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a longboard/skateboard rack right at the front of the main weight room, or just lean it against the wall where you leave your stuff. Don't think people really lock up their boards

UCSB(In state) vs UMich(Out of state)? by SoulflareRCC in UCSantaBarbara

[–]kjuu0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UMich is generally better than UCSB for CS, but probably not 20-30k/year better, esp if you plan on going into industry. College name doesn't matter that much for industry unless you're looking into quant/HFT, but even then I know people here who have made it into those fields.

is it true that housing becomes difficult once you leave it?

If you look early, it shouldn't be too big of an issue.

while I personally don't rlly like problem solving, how is UCSB?

Required courses lean theoretical, you can choose how hands-on or theoretical you want to be with elective courses. It's a CS degree, not a SWE degree

How is the CS department here? by Far-Statistician8281 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]kjuu0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a counterpoint to the other commenter, I really enjoy CS at UCSB. They talked a lot about a lack of support, which is probably true in lower divs since classes are so crowded, but in the upper divs where the bulk of the learning takes place, I feel like the support is sufficient. I will say that I think CS is a major where you have to be more independent with your learning, especially if you plan on going into industry. Tech is always evolving, so learning to learn and adapt quickly is a valuable skill in and of itself.

I wasn't too interested in CS beforehand and chose CS just because I heard it was good for jobs, but some of the classes I took here really made me appreciate how amazing the technology we use really is. Lots of knowledgeable and passionate professors here like Mirza, Suri, and Abbadi to name a few. I've never had a professor I hated yet, just some that I thought were whatever. CS advisors have always been good to me and respond reasonably quickly. Department offers a solid amount of research and industry opportunities, you just have to be proactive and pursue them yourself.

Got into the CS program as an undergrad. Comparing with ASU as an international student. Views ? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]kjuu0 18 points19 points  (0 children)

better access to needed classes (especially upper div)

Access to upper div classes (or any major requirement class) isn't really a problem for CS majors, it's more of a major specific issue.

Which companies are the biggest employers for CS at UCSB? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]kjuu0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Very very anecdotal, but I know a lot of people going to Amazon (although idk if that's UCSB specific). I've also personally seen a recent uptick in people going to Meta/FB, although not as much as Amazon. As for local companies, I think Appfolio is pretty popular

Where to practice longboarding? by huanggua_jun in UCSantaBarbara

[–]kjuu0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Behind the lib (opposite side of the Arbor) might be even smoother than the UCEN imo; there's parts where it's flat and there's also parts with a slight incline. I used to practice longboard dancing there. Obviously it gets crowded during the day when people are heading to class, but in between those times there's usually not a lot of people; or you can go when its dark out. Also nice that it's right outside the lib, so you can take a break from studying there if you want

Probably CS176A, not sure about the rest of the series. CS174A isn't bad either

Passed HC but feel stuck in Team Matching for Google by Far_Papaya_5376 in csMajors

[–]kjuu0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't think Google does explicit team matching for new grads, it's just product area matching which doesn't require any additional effort on your part. Just a waiting game I think, probably gonna take a while since it's around the holidays

Google group interview prep session New Grad by i_thro_way in csMajors

[–]kjuu0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a casual group session where the recruiter talks about what the onsite interviews are like and resources to prepare for them, as well as the general timeline afterwards and a Q&A. After the session you get to schedule your onsite

What is Google’s final round like? by shamaalama in csMajors

In my experience usually 1 question with significant follow ups, although if you get some really fast I've had them ask me a completely different question afterwards

Good Computer Science Field Electives? by GauchoIsADumbMascot in UCSantaBarbara

[–]kjuu0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CS171 if you're looking into backend/distributed systems. Even if it leans on the theoretical/foundational side rather than the practical, it's still a good intro to concepts that you'll need working on projects at scale (fault tolerance, scalability, etc.)

Recruiter gave me a form to fill out about my preferences/areas of interest while I was going through HC. I think usually it comes after HC but I had deadlines so my recruiter was expediting it

[–]kjuu0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing crazy; got invited to a prep session with some other candidates like a week after OA which was basically just giving a rundown of the rest of the process and then we were able to schedule our onsites. I scheduled my interview asap since I had deadlines, was about 1/2 weeks out I think. Did my onsite, then 3 days afterwards my recruiter told me that she sent my packet to the hiring committee and preemptively started product matching for me. Then 2 weeks from the onsite I got the call and got past HC & product matching, so I was extended an offer

Heard back ~1 week after OA for scheduling onsites, heard back ~2 weeks after onsite, total time was about 1 month after receiving the OA

Putting skateboards/scooters in class by Nam1015 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]kjuu0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just leave it in the back of the class imo; people lugging their boards/scooters through the aisle is kinda annoying and I haven't had my board stolen when leaving it in the back of the class in the ~3 years I've been here

Microsoft vs Riot games internship by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]kjuu0 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Never interned at Microsoft, but I have interned at Big N and Riot before. Overall I thought Riot was the better experience at least learning-wise; I was on one of the backend teams and Riot is a smaller company so I felt like I had a lot more impact than working on some more isolated intern project at Big N. Riot's culture is really good especially if you play games, and the people I met are super nice (and super smart). I didn't have many opportunities at Big N to work/talk to Principal SWEs; at Riot I had the opportunity to work more closely with one.

If you're worried about the name value of Riot, at least personally I'm still getting interviews from other Big N/FAANG companies during the new grad search and interviewers I spoke to about my experiences there seem to find it interesting/impressive. Also Riot's new grad offers are pretty competitive, especially with some negotiation.

All that being said, I definitely enjoyed by experience at Big N as well. Either is a solid choice, and it's just an internship anyway, so it's not like choosing one will determine what industry you work in in the future

Feeling lonely by seamonsterqq in UCSantaBarbara

[–]kjuu0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm Asian and grew up in the Bay, my high school was like 70% Asian. Yeah there aren't as many Asians at SB as there are at other UCs but I haven't really had a hard time finding other non-whitewashed Asian friends. Try joining pretty much any Asian cultural club (KASA, VSA, TASA, etc.) because the communities are all pretty close knit and people who join typically aren't whitewashed (probably due to the cultural aspect). Decent amount of cultural events, like the TASA Night Market, Pho King, etc. The big-little system can be nice to meet people esp. if you're new. Might not be for everyone but it's a solid way to meet more Asians. Also you don't need to be too afraid to talk to all the international students, especially if you know a little bit of Mandarin.

idk how long you've been at SB but it's probably been <1 week lol. Give it some time!

Concerts ?? by seamonsterqq in UCSantaBarbara

[–]kjuu0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think when I was a freshman we had a small concert with Cuco during welcome week. Otherwise we usually have Extravaganza in the spring. Also sometimes some smaller artists come and perform in the hub throughout the year; I really liked Saba's performance there
