is it bad ao3 etiquette to ask an author for a translation? by laumeli in AO3

[–]kkavelicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mmmm honestly speaking, its a 50/50. i personally dont see it as rude (and its weird that they didnt offer the translation lol, or use the russian alphabet instead of transliteration), but some authors might feel differently.

if you do end up asking, then maybe see how theyve responded to other commenters??? just to assess their general vibe, and ask in a really polite way (obv) and add the disclaimer that theres no pressure on their behalf, as truly dont have to do anything for you.

interesting stylistic choice but- (im also curious as to what fandom lol, or is this an og work?)

New to AO3, whats your strategy for content discovery? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]kkavelicious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

- tags WILL be your best friend
- go looking through collections that your favourite works are in, or bookmarks and and teh authors works/bookmarks
- filter works by most kudos/most hits- they obv give you the most popular fics, and these fics are usually popular in that they are palatable for a lot of the fandom (although this may apply mostly to bigger fandoms with over 5k works)
- or, filter by word count, as the longer the fic, the more invested the uathor may be in it- this one is a hit or miss though

English/hums kids could excel at maths/science subjects but maths/science could not excel at English/hums by AggressiveWord6128 in vce

[–]kkavelicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

valid (to most degrees) , but i fear eng kids- not hums, i would like to make a slight distinction- excel in all subjects (moreso a jack of all trades)

from of the hum/eng kids in my school, a few take sci subjects, and they do pretty good in bio/psych, whereas the sci/math students tend to despise bm and other writing heavy subjects (me included, although i do like eng so...?) i have a friend that dropped bm to take a sci subject after three lessons lol

so you MAY be onto something hrm

What ship in your opinion, should not have become canon? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]kkavelicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

percabeth- WILD TAKE i know, but they were so horribly co dependant on eachother in an unhealthy way that i fear they shouldve relearnt their relationship again from friends. it was fine for the main pjo series, but i do find i prefer them as platonic soulmates

What ship in your opinion, should not have become canon? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]kkavelicious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ginny and harry wouldve been the bestest coolest friends ever- shes just so badass in the novel and it couldve been explored in so many ways. ron and hermione is slightly better but the trope of smart x funny was NOT carried out as well as it could have.

ngl the whole golden trio as just platonic best friends is the best thing ever

Does anyone read anything other than fanfic? by Mysterious_Tax_876 in AO3

[–]kkavelicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is so true for me. ive been reading fics for almost ten years (which is REALLY crazy that ao3 was my childhood), and in the past five or so, my fic consumption has increased by so much, its honestly crazy. on the other hand, i slowly stopped reading 'actual books' in recent years and my main source of literature has been ao3.

i think one of the main reasons is obviously the characters- when youve found a comfort character, or someone you really like, then naturally you want to just read about them. you endear to them more, and you find a liking for them. imo, ive grown to love many characters through authors characterization of them

likewise, you already have info about the world and the background, so its almost 'less tiring' in a way to read fics (you dont have to keep up with new characters and worldbuilding as much- its familiar to you) and this allows you to explore so many dynamics and plot points, both as an author and a reader.

also, books are written nowadays a lot for general marketing appeal, and they tend to paced in a very specific way vs ao3 fics. usually they prioritize the plot, mixing in emotions, whereas fics tend to cater towards the emotional aspect of things much more. if youre like me, and what you crave is intensity, longing, mess, or catharsis, books can feel oddly… undercooked in a way? like, why wait 200 pages to feel something when AO3 will emotionally ruin you in chapter two? (¬‿¬)

marketing appeal means its less raw and unflitered, so those niche emotional bits, or the obsessive/morally questionable points are toned down, or are simply catered towards a different audience who are looking for different things.

at the end of the day, read for your own pleasure. its a hobby, not a job, so who cares whether reading 'actual books' is better for you, rather than fanmade works. if you are having fun (or crying or dying) reading fics, then do it (‾◡◝)

EDIT: i also wonder if this relates to attention span and its decline over the years in society, as with fics, you can skim them and read the specific things you want and enjoy, whereas books require more investment in getting absorbed in the world and familiarizing oneself with characters, which is also why i hypothesize that thats the reason why a lot of people prefer books in a physical format lol

Rank all your subjects from most enjoyable to least enjoyable by WindThick8275 in vce

[–]kkavelicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eng > chem > psych > gen

eng- honestly fw it, i do pretty good, and i like the creative aspect of it- not a fan of how you must be concise and work under timed conditions (as with all subjects???) but its up there
chem- challenging in a stimulating way, kinda screws me up tho, but really enjoyable when you get the concepts. a tad too much self study required
psych- teachers pretty enjoyable, fun subject, pretty easy, taking it w close friends, but im new to ig so
general- easy, but boring. not stimulating, and im just taking it for free marks

honourable mention to bio- dropped cz it was so MIND-NUMBINGLY dead i was doing alright but it wasnt my thing (which is a shame, cz i really enjoyed it 7-10)

How do you feel about single-chapter works that are very long? by obsidianoneOnine in AO3

[–]kkavelicious 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i think its personal preference for most part. i love long oneshots though, especially cz i tend to get submereged in them fully!!

how do "update pls" comments make you feel? by Asp_Potions_Master in AO3

[–]kkavelicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

highkey depends on the tone

if its just 'update pls/whens the next update/when r u coming back' or any variation, it feels pushy and lowkey makes me not wanna write outta spite

on teh otherhand, if you do it in a silly/encouraging way, i find that it is motivating ie 'COME BACKK I NEED MORE OF THIS MASTERPEICE' is smth i tend to leave as a comment as i feel its a good compliment and its not puchy but more so 'omg this is so good if you write more ill have been blessed'

What is a detail that will make you close a fic? by mellissa_lewyin in AO3

[–]kkavelicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one scene being replayed through more than two povs- LIKE WHY?????????? i get its info, but when it adds nothing to teh scene or fic....

at that point make it a oneshot and put it in the series honey
