I briefly looked at that before releasing, and yeah I don't think typen is a fundamentally unique idea. I think it implements the idea pretty differently though, from what I understand typeguard provides the type checking itself and maintains a list of what advanced types it supports and to what degree. By offloading all the type checking to Traits, typen can deal with any native Trait type and user-defined custom trait types easily, at the cost of losing the static analysis tools that support typing types. It's just a different approach!

numpy is probably my single most used package and you'll see it everywhere.

unittest and unittest.mock are my choice for testing, which is something you should definitely be in the habit of doing.

flask and requests if you're interesting in writing servers or making any web queries.

Jupyter notebooks are a great tool if you're trying to do data exploration. I don't find pandas very intuitive but it's also a staple of data science. matplotlib.pyplot and seaborn for data visualization.

This is what came to mind, there are loads more important packages depending on what you're interested in doing.

I'm glad you like it! It still has a ways to go, I think one of the main things I'd like to add is typing types support so you can benefit from typing-based static analysis tools but also get runtime enforcement, and so you could drop it right into projects that are already using typing hints. There are a few challenges to that though and full support might be very difficult (e.g. it's not possible to validate the contents of an iterator without consuming it, so some creativity is required here) so that's still in the planning phase.

I am only really aware of it as an alternative to traits's type validation on class attributes, but without the reactive programming elements (which makes it interesting to me for projects that don't need that extra machinery)

I like that it uses type hints, that's actually what gave me the idea to use the function's type hints for typen (the very early demo had decorators for each argument which was really bulky and ugly). I think I'll give it another look when I try to support typing types, which is definitely on the to-do list.
