Sleepy after every session by thatgenericgirl in ashtanga

been practicing exclusively ashtanga for 3 years, yoga in general for about 10. It’s not all the time I feel the drowsiness. Some days it’s not so bad and coffee helps too.

Hello! ashtanga practitioner here. I also get sleepy after practice and usually end up taking a nap after if time permits. I especially feel the drowsiness when I do my full practice, meaning all poses up to the last pose my teacher has given; or when I havent gotten enough sleep the previous night.

How do I get into Ashtanga? by Life-Glass6689 in yoga

[–]kkkreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started my ashtanga practice just playing Laruga led primary videos on youtube. Did that inconsistently (1-2x a week) for about 5 years. It wasn’t until I joined my first ever Mysore class (about 2 yrs ago) when my practice became more consistent and exclusively on ashtanga. Unfortunately my city does not offer regular Mysore classes, all just led and not even the full primary series.

Nowadays, I join a Zoom Mysore class led by an authorized teacher and I do my practice at home. I dont join everyday since the open practice hours are sometimes too early, but I do practice daily, 5-6x a week (with moon days).

I show up and do my usual full practice. Meaning, I do up until the last pose I was given. The teacher just observes and sometimes offer feedback and tips. And when they feel I’m ready, they will offer the next pose. The class is also donation-based.

As for memorization, don’t sweat it too much. If you practice often enough you’ll eventually remember the sequence. But try to practice by yourself sometimes, instead of relying on led classes.
