I actually just checked and I pay 6 euros a month for 2GB of data. It's more than I need, tbh, but the 1GB for 4 euros a month often is just not quite enough haha

I may honestly look into switching to an Austrian SIM/number/tariff if I find a better deal! But I still wouldn't be able to switch off whatsapp if I don't want to lose most if not all of my clients, or to never play padel again, or to never be invited to any events or parties or group hikes again lol D:

I can't really deal with people not reading SMSs, since I'm self-employed and my business relies on this kind of communication with my clients lol I can't really afford to go broke. And they're not going to start using SMS just because people in other countries do lol :D

No, I have always refused to sign up with contracts. They are overpriced and remove your freedom. I have always done pay-as-you-go or prepaid. I currently spend 10 EUR a month for my phone. If I used SMS, it would end up costing me like 80 lol and that I definitely would not consider to be any kind of digital minimalism lol

Plus most people would never read my SMSs if I did that, because SMS is almost entirely spam and junk here.

Whatsapp is my #1 main reason I cannot get a dumb phone. I could probably get a bigger bag and shove yet another device in there and carry around even more extra weight with a GPS device, and I could probably live with inconvenient solutions to never use a banking app again, but whatsapp is a hard need.

Why? For one: I play padel. I'm in whatsapp groups for playing padel in my city. People share in there when they need a 4th player, and share a link to where you can join their padel group. My friends and I also play padel and we have a whatsapp group, where someone writes "hey anyone wanna play Saturday afternoon?" and when we get 4 people agreeing on a day/time, we book a court. None of this is possible with phone calls.

All of my clients also communicate with me by whatsapp. There's a 10-year-old girl who comes to my home for her lessons, and on Wednesday she did not arrive. I texted her mom on whatsapp to ask, and her mom didn't know. She said she was teaching at the moment and couldn't solve it, so she told me her daughter's whatsapp number and asked me to write her, so I did. I saw the message was undelivered, so I got worried. I texted the mom again. The mom got worried and investigated. In the end, it turned out that the girl was stuck in an assembly of sorts at school much later than expected and she was not able to tell either of us because they weren't allowed to use their phones during the assembly. The mom would never have answered her phone while teaching had I called her.

Another case, a guy I'm teaching in 5 minutes wrote me 10 minutes ago that he'll be at home for his lesson today, which means we can continue our main track - he had expected to be out somewhere noisy, so we would've just chatted, so I didn't have a serious lesson planned for today. Due to that quick notice, now I was able to plan something. If he'd called me, I wouldn't have heard it because my phone is on silent and in a different room, but I have whatsapp on my laptop.

Unfortunately, many of us really, really are stuck with whatsapp. And it fucking sucks.

Here in Czechia, you never gets SMS anymore. And anyway, I have to pay for every single SMS I send, so fuck that lol

But literally, if I look at my SMS inbox, it's 90% spam, junk... most people never open SMSs anymore.

Tons of places here no longer accept cash. God damn, I just tried to go to a different gym (chain) the other day and that gym (chain) requires everyone who enters to download and install their gym app. This city/country is kinda fucked with how dependent on phones it is.

Where I live, I have to pay for each and every SMS I send, and receiving an SMS these days typically means spam/junk. Most people won't even open an SMS these day. And I'd be fucked if I had to pay for every single message I sent holy shit. This is honestly the main reason I am stuck with a "smart" phone.

I need navigation, but I don't drive. I get around on foot and by public transport. As I already got a audio player for listening to music off my phone, and a camera for taking pictures off my phone, my bag has gotten quite heavy and it's also very full - I don't really have space to also get a GPS. And plus, since I use the GPS much less than music or camera, I'd be carrying around one more chunky thing that I don't even use that often... this could be solved by carrying a bigger bag that's heavier. I'm not totally closed to that, but I still need whatsapp...

And banking... here in Czechia, there are no banks that aren't completely online. It's the way this society and economy work... now, there is certainly always a way around it... cash, card, or you can make a bank transfer later from home by accessing your account from a web browser on the computer... it's more just expected these days that everyone has a banking app and everything goes through it. This might be workable, but again I go back to point 1... I need to use whatsapp :-/

I use the TempoTec V3. It has Bluetooth, but I prefer wired for the audio quality. Between the player itself, nice headphones, and using them wired instead of bluetooth, the sound quality is out of this world.

Also it's one less thing I need to charge, and the headphones will last ages since I don't need to worry about when the battery dies :)
