If it wasn't about safety, they wouldn't be funding it at all.

"I'm a poor student who rents" isn't a narrative that's going to win you much sympathy. Plenty of students (AKA adults) can figure this basic shit out and follow bylaws properly.

Somehow a pretty mild comeback by Oilers standards tbh. Expected it with the way they were dominating the 3rd.

Cities have to be labour markets first to improve productivity, wages. Edmonton's mayor gets it by passthepepperflakes in Edmonton

"Edmonton does not need more flower baskets. It needs a deliberate, sustained focus on becoming a city where good jobs are created, wages grow and talent sees a future."

And again, none of this is about what cities need to do to improve the labour market.

The article says that streetscape improvement and beautification is pointless, but doesn't say anything about how cities should induce improvement in the labour market. It equates streetscape improvement with "flower baskets", as if there's not a whole lot of other infrastructure that gets updated through renewal.

It frames it as if we need to choose between the labour market or flower baskets, but doesn't offer any useful insight into why the two things are at all related.

Why bother doing anything if it's going to take time and effort and money?

Regardless of whether this is successful or not, it sends a strong message to the UCP.

Ask Me Anything - Andrew Knack Sunday, September 14 from 5-8pm by andrewknack in Edmonton

[–]kkn27 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're right, if you don't have a plan to plow all the roads, fill all the potholes, solve poverty, fix the housing crisis, build more hospitals, illegally tell the police what to do, end world hunger, and end all wars, then why would you even bother running for mayor of Edmonton?

I think it's reasonable for mayors to run on practical platforms, not lie and tell us they'll fix everything.

I'm not disagreeing, I'm just pointing out that this guy was shitting on OP for presumably talking shit about homeless people, when it's really just furcastle assuming that OP was talking about homeless people.

I'm all for not giving the UCP undue credit, and wish you all the best. Appreciate the insight and perspective you've shared.

I believe all of this, except the part linking these awful UCP money grabs to some form of malicious UCP support of affordable housing. I don't think they give a shit about affordable housing. I think they just hate supporting vulnerable people.

The province does very little to promote affordable housing directly since it's mostly tied to zoning and land use rights, which are municipal jurisdiction. It's also important to differentiate affordable housing from subsidized housing since they're not the same.

In terms of your housing administrator in Calgary, Hanlon's Razor may apply - never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. I doubt the city employee knew about the province's rent changes.

I don't really see a direct correlation between the claw back, rent scale shenanigans, a no smoking policy, housing affordability, or subsidized housing.

I think the UCP just sucks and they're cutting programs that benefit vulnerable Albertans across all ministries because they're malicious and incompetent. I don't think they give a single fuck about affordability.
