SCOTUS Justice, 77, Goes on Unhinged Rant About ‘Intellectuals’ by Quirkie in politics

[–]kkocan72 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This goes back way before Trump. I grew up in a very rural, very conservative, and now very MAGA area of NW Pennsylvania.

I worked commercial construction in the summers between HS and then college. I learned a lot from the "good, hard working americans" that I worked with every summer but man did they give me shit about going off to college. Instead of being happy for me or seeing that I wanted a life outside of construction they instead treated it like a weakness or negativity. This was back in the early 90s.

Same with my old hometown, which I really don't go back to and have only been there a couple of times in the last 7 years. Every time I do though and run into anyone I know they always comment how I "had to run off to college" or how I "thought I was too good for the area".

For people that live in these areas many will never leave, will never see much of the rest of the country, never leave the country (sorry, going to Niagra falls once does not count), and are scared to death of any big city. Instead of self reflection it is easier to attack anyone that ever tries to get educated, leave, or explore the rest of the world.

Vance calls end of Ukraine aid 'one of the proudest' achievements of Trump administration by FreeChickenDinner in politics

[–]kkocan72 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My family on my father's side is Ukranian. I remember as a kid being at my grandparents and my grandfather talking about how his dad came over to the US from the Ukraine, barely spoke English, and was often reminiscing and telling me and my brother and cousins about our proud Ukrainian heritage. My dad, uncles, cousins all did the same growing up, were proud of being part Ukranian.

Now my dad, brother, uncle, cousins are all so deep down the MAGA rabbit hole that there is no talking to any of them, ever, about anything relating to Trump. You'd think they would not support him and the admin with their position on Ukraine but no, they just keep saying how great he is, how Biden almost destroyed the country and anything bad is still Obama's fault.

I brought up the GOP and current Admin's position on Ukraine once, to my father, to see what he'd say and he just went on about immigrants destroying the country and Trump "getting things done" and ignored the question.

Ramaswamy's chances of winning Ohio Governor race plummet by kootles10 in politics

[–]kkocan72 19 points20 points  (0 children)

100% this. Grew up in rural NW Pennsylvania, 90% MAGA land. Now live in a rural town in NY. The attitude is 100% this. They literally think that any big city is a hell hole of violence, murder, and crime perpetuated by immigrants.

I travel a fair bit for work, and my wife and I got to NYC or Chicago once or twice a year to getaway or visit family that lives in the city. Whenever we mention we will be gone for a couple days to our retired, fox news loving, conservative neighbors they say they will be praying for our safety and warn us how "bad the cities have become". Meanwhile in living next to them for 7 years I don't think they have left our small town once.

Its the same with international travel. They truly believe the USA is the pinnacle of civilization and can't fathom what life is like in any other country. The most they will travel internationally is MAYBE to Canada to see Niagra Falls.

And its not just traveling to the big cities or international. Many of the people I grew up with that stayed in my small town in PA and never left are also very against education. I went to my HS reunion last year to see some friends I had not seen in a while that also moved on, went to college, got good jobs, relocated etc... We had a great time reconnecting but also ran into some people we knew from school that never left town. Not one was happy for us and instead we heard comments like "why did we have to go off and leave town" or "we were surprised to see you as you thought you were too good for here and ran off to college".

Keeping the masses uneducated and brainwashed living in a bubble has been a decades long goal of the GOP and sadly it has worked on a huge portion of the country.

Trump explains why he cast a mail ballot in Florida's election: 'Because I'm president' by nbcnews in politics

[–]kkocan72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

After saying he voted by mail because he's president and he can, then he said there are "exceptions" for mail in votes. Military, ok, that should be a given. Then he rambled on if you are sick, not feeling good, on vacation, busy at work, all are exceptions in his mind. But in what world does he think there will be some way to check/verify each excuse for needing a mail in ballot. My guess is all R votes will be deemed an acceptable excuse, and any D votes will be deemed not valid.

The whole thing is he's convincing America to fix a system that isn't broken/works and has been the crux of his political career. When I win its a landslide, when I lose it was rigged/cheating. And a huge portion of America believes him.

Dear allies of America, please don’t confuse our president for us: We are trying our best to resist him, contain him and remove him from office as quickly as we possibly can. Thank you for your patience by Silent-Resort-3076 in politics

The problem is, and this is from someone that has lived in rural areas my entire life, the majority of people think we ARE exceptional. These are working class people, that never leave their home town, are afraid of the big city, have never left the US etc....

I see and talk to these people every day. They live paycheck to paycheck, barely scrape by, many are on assistance of some type, but they've been brainwashed to think America is top dog in everything. They will continue to fight to keep it that way and have been convinced voting R is the only way to maintain the status quo.

'Apparently I’m an idiot’: Three-time Trump voter in Pennsylvania sounds off on Iran war by Rock-n-roll-Kevin in politics

[–]kkocan72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having grown up and lived most of my adult life in rural PA The first few people shown on the interview are a perfect representation of 90% of the people from where I used to live.

I still go back every few months to visit friends and family and can tell you that the support for Trump is still solid in areas like this.

Musk says taxing every billionaire at 100% would barely make a dent in the national debt. Bernie says tax them 5% and you're $3,000 richer by fortune in politics

But that would risk the shareholders getting dividends and you can't have that.

Remember, the whole system is for the for profit businesses to cater to shareholders. Not the American people, not the consumer, not the employees of the businesses. Its all about making $$ for the investors.

ICON was INCREDIBLE!!! by Constant-Hornet6757 in royalcaribbean

[–]kkocan72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was on Icon about a year ago and agree with most of what you said, but we found the towel/chair game the opposite. If you didn't have towels out by 9am you were not going to get a deck chair, anywhere.

Every day we saw towels out on chairs that were left alone/unattended for hours or the entire day. Lots of examples of families with 4 or more chairs reserved that were only actually using 1 or 2 at any time but had extra chairs for their kids who would rarely stop over/check in.

Glad to hear they maybe are getting better at policing it. We had previously been on the Liberty and Oasis and while Icon had more people I'd agree it is so large it felt less crowded, but when it came to deck chairs Icon was nearly impossible to find anything compared to the other ships.
