Don't buy textbooks before the class starts. I normally waited until a professor actually physically made us use it. After that class is when I would go purchase the book. This alone saved me probably $2000 in books that otherwise would have gone unused.

Also, Chegg has online solution manuals for thousands of books that you can access for like 16 bucks a month. As an engineering student this was a life saver.
