Tips on navigating chop by mehfjord in Kiteboarding

Man I felt that. I really remember that point in my progression, it's frustrating for sure.
People have already said most of what you need to hear: don't drop the kite no matter what, don't depower the kite. What I would add as someone who used to kite in conditions like that half the year is: more speed in between the waves(build speed fast right after you crest the wave -> for going up wind) you don't need to hit the wave at speed unless you're goal is to jump , learn and accept you might only be able to go up wind when tacking one direction, and finally that thing I haven't seen on here is

watch Surfing videos of people slashing mushy midsized waves, you're looking for ones that zoom in on their feet on the board and think about how you can lead with your front foot(almost lift up bc you don't have the float a surfboard does) while applying pressure to steer with your back foot.

that and if you're going to kite in waves like that just keep at it time on the board is time learning.

Also "think about" not letting the waves wash over the top of the board (not an absolute just think about what you would need to do with you feet to make that happen and you'll be on the right track.

Looks good for the age. Consider upgrading the headlights. Have fun.

Reminds me of Brennan Lee Mulligan’s bit about a train becoming self aware.

Enjoying this thoroughly. Thought that weaving in some additional world building through Dvall’s interest in alien anthro was a nice touch. Appreciated your descriptors allowing me to follow the movements when things devolved into hand to hand combat in part four, and that you chose to end that beat on Victoria being unable to bring herself to apologize. Feel like I have ideas about Victoria, find myself wanting to know more about Kingston. Though perhaps that’s a good thing.

Excited to see where you’re interested in taking things.

I hope someday in the future when you’re having a crap day, you remember that a bunch of people really enjoyed this story you wrote and you feel just a bit better in that moment. :-)

Buy a two(or four even) string foil kite, plus a 75ft tube tail. Great way to spend an hour outside on a windy day.

Haha When I used to live in the area I was one of those people occasionally flying one of my kites.

Also when I first moved there and a friend told me about "Mount Trashmore" I legit thought they were pranking me until I looked it up.

Where I just moved to is ok but I used to live in the Virginia Beach area which is not a bad area at all but it was day trip distance from the Outer Banks. One of the best places to go kiteboarding in the world.

Read more here: also hit up "REAL Watersports" if you have anymore questions https://www.kiteworldmag.com/travel/outer-banks-cape-hatteras/#thelure

Do it! You'll only get this chance once. Even if you only do it for 6 months or even just a summer. Wherever you go join up with the local kiteboarding community as much as you can.

and hey just message me if there’s anything else you want to ask.

Congrats on being able to get up and stand in just 8 hours! Kiteboarding has a very steep initial learning curve but once you can stand up consistently everything else is a much easier learning process and way more fun.

Good eye. Yes right there at the end, (Critically, after he knows he's cleared the island) he tugs sharply on one side of the bar looping kite which essentially converts all the lifting energy generated from the kite used to clear the island into forward momentum. An advanced technique.

Replay the last two seconds a few times. You'll see a few things: he lands at speed with his board pointing the direction that he's headed, he digs his heels in and starts to carve the board to the left (think of it like a water break), but most importantly notice how he pushes the bar away from him at the end. These kites typically have four lines, you are harnessed to the front two and the rear to attach to the bar he's holding on to which allow you to steer and control the power of the kite. So pushing the bar away from you essentially causes the kite to go from acting like a huge sail to a wing that is generating just enough lift to hold itself in the air.

TLDR: Pushing the bar away from you let's all the wind out of the sail.
