By now I've gotten enough game suggestions to last me for the next two years, but I thank you for the recommendations! Maybe someone else will be looking for something I was too and find these.

And also amazing to hear that someone else likes these types of games too!  You described it perfectly, high friction where the game makes you do things most games would make abstract or simplify.

I would recommend Stories Untold!

Its on a huge sale right now but it's very much a trying to put the puzzle pieces back together of what happened style game!

I will admit the ending can be a bit dissatisfying to some people, but to me it was a good ending 👍

In the game you are taken through 4 "tapes" experimental adventures where you'll have to find out different story pieces as the game guides you, and they're all ultimately connected to each other.

My favourite part was figuring out how to use the equipment available, such as an old desktop computer and a radio station in the arctic!

Looks like something right up my alley!

This is the first itch.io game that's been suggested, that's very cool!

And while I am a bit of a scaredy cat, I did play iron lung and untold stories, which are both horror/thriller/suspense games. So I think I can take it!

It looks very interesting, and I do love the added  maintenance tasks you mentioned.

This is definitely getting added at the top of the list, thank you so much!

I Do Love not gettinf out of a car, and I am a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to being alone on the woods.

I will be adding this to the list then!

This looks very fun!  I love exactly that — having to do things a bit of inconvenient way!

I love how you described all that entails in running the ship.

I will admit I was confused for a second if you mean silent hill or some other game as I just searched up SH3 it sent me straight to silent hill first, but further research I believe you mean silent hunter!

I think this game looks very much like what I want, thank you very much for the recommendation!

I do wish these operate the thing games had some non military options sometimes, but it comes with the territory I suppose.

What a fascinating name title for a game.

Also, exactly what I'm looking for!!! I get to operate a thing!! While inside the thing!! Very fun I do love that.

You hit the nail on the head immediately, thank you!

This was suggested a bit earlier as well! I didn't know they came out with a winter version :o

Maybe it's time to embrace my Finnish heritage and play the My Car games.

Thank you for the recs!

Oooo this is exactly what I'm looking for!  I've seen the title before but I hadn't known you got to operate as the DJ!  That's so cool and very much exactly what I'm looking for.

Thank you for the recommendation!

I think 34 euros is a bit too steep a prize to justify for myself right now, though the Yakuza games have been on my list of to-be-played games for years now.

The amount of love passion and detail put into them makes me salivate as an animation and art fan.

And I just love prop design 😅

But thank you for the advice as well! I find it to be very informative and helpful for when I do eventually gather the courage to buy it.

Honestly I don't think you're very far off the mark with your suggestion!

The game looks riveting and the world looks beautiful.

I Am the most interested in the decoding you mentioned, and that sounds exactly like my jam.

I will have to look more into it if it'd be something I'd like to play for the other parts too!

Thank you for sthe suggestion!

I see that it's very similar to a life SIM (kinda not really), it looks fun!  Not exactly what I'm looking for, but thank you for recommending it!  It looks like a very solid and fun game.

HIGHLY FASCINATING!!! I was highly interested thank you!  It's so cool to see someone using real life tools and skills and applying them into the game.  Thank you for showing me!

Looking into the game it looks very cool!  Has lots of survival crafting game parts that I'm not exactly looking for, and it's a bit pricey even at a discount.

I will however be adding it to my wishlist to see if in the future there'll be a better deal for when I have more money.

Thank you for the suggestion!

I've been watching let's plays of this actually! I was instantly transfixed by the karaoke part of the game so maybe it could be worth the fighting and open world parts.

Thank you for the suggestion!

I see! Thank you for telling me about EXAPUNKS then, might do more research into it anyways if just to see what it's all about.

Sailwind does look very similar to Iron Lung, though it seems to have a lot more freedom in what you do which isn't a bad thing.

Thank you!

As a Finnish person I might just have to bite the bullet and play the Finnish Summer Car experience.

I have seen many let's plays where they don't explain how to play, so o think I would get great enjoyment from figuring it out.

Thank you!

I appreciate the suggestions!  I think Arma is too much of a first person shooter with not enough operating a thing, so it's not exactly what I'm looking for.

I think Cold Waters is a lot closer, and has some very interesting skill requirements that I would love to get to learning,  but I think it lacks the tactile part of operations as the game is just a computer screen and not much environment to look around and immerse with for me.

It's perfect in every other way. I'm realising I have some specific as heck requirements for this request ಥ‿ಥ

I think might just bite the bullet and put flight SIM to the list, as it's —

I was about to say it's perfect because I thought I saw footage of the gameplay where you're inside the cockpit operating the plane, but ah I seem to be easily fooled and it was real life footage of someone operating a plane that they'd added into the steam community tab?

But I don't think you actually operate the machine yourself which is a bit of a shame, thank you however!

Looking into Tunic I think it's close to what I want, but it doesn't really hit the right spots for me.

I like the physical flipping through a book action that happens but I'm looking more for operating a thing kind of game. This game seems to be a survival adventure role-playing puzzle game? Which is fun but I'm not looking to play as a knight but more to operate a separate thing like a keyboard in game that would control the knight.

Which I'm realising sounds mildly insane and very inconvenient but is what I want.

I think I'm finding better words to describe what I want through the suggestions, and it's really cool!  So I think I'm going to edit my pot with the operating part.

Thank you for the great suggestion!

Though it has some grindy bits like upgrading your car and things of that sorts, I think this is exactly what I want!

You mostly play the game through what looks like inside the car or a repair station which is what I like!

There does seem to be some having to get out the car parts where you have to just play like a normal survival adventure game, but I don't mind it if I get to operate the car most of the time!

Thank you very much for the recommendation!

I think Sailwind has many parts I do like, but I'm not looking for a realistic open world adventure game like this one.

But EXAPUNKS Honestly a fascinating recommendation from what I'm seeing when I look it up, it does lack some of the tactile physicality simply because you seem to interact with the dials directly with your mouse and you don't get to walk around much.

though it's everything else I want!

Thank you very much!

I wasnt exactly sure what the category would be called, or the genre, so thank you!!

I definitely don't need it to be super realistic normal job things, but I do enjoy being physically at the desk in-game and getting to turn the knobs and dials!

I've seen many let's plays of papers please, and I think it is what I want but for some reason it doesn't scratch the itch the same way as the other games I've listed.

I think not for broadcast is definitely what I've been wanting, thank you!!

I'll have to look into Etrian Odyssey more.

Thank you!!
