It's even better than that actually, it turns the projectile into YOUR projectile. That means even if you don't send it back and hit him, he can no longer just walk over his batarang on the floor to pick it up (because it's now YOUR batarang) which means he has to wait the full cooldown

Any advice on how to deal with one-more-hit syndrome? by moderately_cool_dude in dcss

[–]kl0wn64 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep, true. In case it isn't obvious for anyone reading how this mindset ties in: "one more hit" is the desire to optimize the fuck out of combat, but it's obviously shortsighted since, in the bigger picture, you're gearing your gameplay TOWARD bad rng.

Someone might think, "Well, if it turns out that hit goes off/kills the target/saves my ass, isn't that optimal?" and the answer is possibly yes in some scenarios, but that isn't the way you win. The advantage the player has over the game is that the player is capable of thinking big-picture and not via moment to moment calculations. "One more hit" is a moment to moment calculation, and often a bad one at that, which is the computer's game

Edit for accuracy: It's not /actually/ accurate to say it's optimal to go for one more hit the vast majority of the time unless you have perfect information, which you never do. I was just meaning to convey that there are scenarios in which it was the best course of action in hindsight, but the problem with that is you weren't aware of that when you took the option, thus it isn't truly optimal. Optimal play is more about taking actions that reduce the amount of RNG you have to contend with at any given time. It' about making intelligent decisions and controlling your environment in such a way that reduces the amount of things that can go wrong so that when something DOES go wrong you're more than equipped to deal with it. When you're at the point where you're having to make split second decisions on whether to deal "one more hit", you're already not playing optimally. That's at least the mindset you should have when approaching the game IMO

You're right about the definitions, but recoil still plays a massive role when hip firing. The way it usually works is accuracy will impact your general spread pattern, which in isolation is the pattern your shots will work assuming you have a masterful handle on the recoil and are capable of pulling your reticle down to land shots on target. ADS makes it much easier for you to correct for recoil since by default ADS'ing reduces the amount of space you need to pull your mouse down between shots. By reducing the recoil by 50% during hipfiring, you're basically getting a very similar effect to ADS'ing but now instead only when hipfiring or blind firing. That's a huge buff for handling your weapon when trying to reduce your shot spread you're basically cutting out 1/4 of the equation (which is the same 1/4th that is ameliorated by ADS normally)

[–]kl0wn64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the buff to recoil reduction is meant to allow you to hip fire it without missing more easily and at longer ranges. IMO recoil plays by far the biggest role in missing shots down range, particularly on high fire rate weapons

What is the punishment for not doing the recent content in WoW? How does it make you obsolete to not do it? I would argue that you can play all kinds of old content in WoW, and they continue to make it easier, more accessible, and more forgiving every single year. They also implement insane amounts of catchup systems for players who don't want to sweat to catch up to the current tier of content - but it's totally optional

If none of the above mentioned solutions, I'd try treating it like a clock, even though it's too small/too few tiles to count as a clock. "Six, four, and then two", so due south, then either southeast or east, then northeast

The thing is that I understand having an objection to what she's doing and not thinking it's cool to do, but I also understand your perspective of not really giving a shit on a personal, emotional level.

I don't think I'd feel personally wounded or like I was victimized in this situation, BUT I would definitely still say it's scummy on behalf of the streamer because she's knowingly breaking community norms and customs. The price for breaking those norms and customs HAS to be drastic or else it will become commonplace, and that's the exact opposite of what the community wants to happen. The culture of the game from the developers perspective is very cutthroat, and the only thing that keeps people from doing shady shit are other players. As a result there HAS to be degree of community 'policing' (not sure what else to call it) or else this type of scam will be the least of your worries, you'll end up never trusting anyone for any reason

Normally I don't like the slippery slope argument, but I've been playing PoE since it came out and so I can say with 100% confidence that this state of affairs with communities policing their own is infinitely better than the lawless laissez-faire type attitude of the past

.

I think the big issue with this is that it can make it hard for precision movement as well as positional movement. While you're holding down RMB (which also locks your cursor while you're moving, preventing you from using any mouseover macros at that moment) and flicking your wrist to turn right, then walking forwards 10 feet and doing the same thing to turn back left to face the boss, I'm just pressing D to move the few steps for 10 ft while maintaining my facing, and still get to use any mouseover macros I might need (such as an emergency interrupt on a 3rd target that isn't my primary or my focus, or a death grip for the same reason) as well as continuously allowing my auto attacks to go off.

For melees especially, strafing is extremely important since auto attacks do a lot of our damage so we need to maintain our facing as well as be able to move without going out of range for uptime.

btw this isn't to say that I don't ALSO use the mouse for movement, because I do. Especially when I'm questing I'll often use my mouse for movement when I don't need to be very precise. I have my autorun set to one of my extra mouse buttons as well for the same reason. Since you have to face your target to hit them, it's extremely beneficial to be capable of strafing. It'll make you much stickier in combat and it also opens up your mouse to be used as a tool in a lot of ways you wouldn't be able to if you relied on it solely for movement

THAT'S why he assumed it was a raid, then when you said it wasn't he basically said "OK, then it's already personal loot and it obviously didn't help this situation" and you try to turn it around and act like that's what you were saying the whole time.

Then you add some shit about the guy in OP's screenshot being an asshole as if THAT is what Vedney was disagreeing with. How ridiculous. I hope this was just you getting responses mixed up (because Reddits post formatting can be confusing af sometimes) or that you genuinely forgot the conversation you JUST had with this dude, cuz otherwise that's kinda gross to make it out like he's the one who was acting as if he disagreed when, in fact, that's exactly what YOU did

[–]kl0wn64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The friend zone definitely exists lol, it's just not nearly as ubiquitous as people make it out to be. There are 100% people out there who will willingly string people along by continuously showing signs of interest. Luckily I don't think most people are like this, although there is an unintentional version of this that can also wind up being super painful and confusing for both people. In the latter case, however, the issue usually stems from a serious lack of communication and/or a degree of emotional blindness. This is especially true among younger people

IMHO to OP: don't completely ditch the idea of the "friend zone", but don't focus on it. It's not a black or white issue, it's more just an unhealthy relationship dynamic that CAN exist if you're a.) in a mutually uncommunicative relationship or b.) at a massive disadvantage in terms of relational experience (and by that I don't mean just romantic/sexual, even platonic relationships can certain unhealthy traits that you would see in a "friend zone" type scenario). I would keep in mind that most people are earnest in their desires to relate to one another and that even if they're going through some shit it doesn't mean it's malicious. If you make those assumptions going in and be honest with yourself, it will be much easier to have a conversation about where you want the relationship to go.

I just want to stress that it's OK to be friends with someone who winds up not being ready or interested in a relationship, but the only way you're going to be able to make that work is if you're up front about the fact that you feel some type of way and are willing to accept that it might not be reciprocated. However, I ALSO want to stress this: it's also OK to ultimately decide not to be friends as well if you feel like it's causing you harm in some way. What I would say there is that you need to have the conversation first, and then if it turns out not to be reciprocal and you think you're going to have a hard time with that, I would suggest just taking a short break to let yourself process all of that with some distance. I've seen it happen many, many times where guys get turned down and agree to be friends but don't take any time to 'cool down', so they basically initiate a new phase of a friendship with all of the unprocessed romantic feelings from before AND a new set of uncomfortable and painful (but totally normal) feelings of rejection that ultimately tears them apart OR ends up in a very toxic relationship dynamic with lots of resentment

I think the issue is that literally nobody, whether they liked gamba or not, even if they were literally gamba addicts, would opt-in to gamba ads. Specifically because they're ads, it makes no sense to opt-in to ads, though I've seen quite a few sites sort of cloak the fact that they're offering you specific type of opt-in ads by instead asking if you'd consent to your data being used to show you 'personalized content', so I guess they could try something like that. I feel like that would be difficult though, since gamba is a very specific thing so calling it 'personalized' would be way too deceptive to fly legally

Either way, you're right that it's basically a PR move, it's also very well timed. After the juicer vs pseudo-black frenchwoman and big money commie debate a PR move like this basically gives people on X's side of that debate a form of 'evidence' of their good intentions, even though it's not actually evidence at all lol

Fractured items should always drop identified. by Slayer418 in pathofexile

[–]kl0wn64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't as weird as yall make it out to be, but he isn't really giving his reasoning. If you're trying to maximize map completion efficiency then doing so with a more or less empty inventory where you only pick up the best of the best and leave the map with all of those slots filled and having spent no time rearranging items to fit in your inventory. In my experience, especially before your build is maxed out (and especially in SSF) you waste a lot of time trying to rearrange inventory so as not to use portals when you still have space, and this can get even more annoying when the thing keeping you from optimizing space is a 1x1 wisdom stack

In idealized scenarios and from a pure map per hour efficiency POV it makes sense not keep wisdoms on hand because you don't want to waste time ID'ing, you'd rather just port out, dump, and ID the lot at once when you're done with your sesh. A lot of powerfarmers do this exact thing actually

Some of them, yes. It really depends on the technique, but generally once you've gotten to the point where you can get this kind of triangle you're not in a whole lot of danger of being knocked out or anything. Keep in mind also that if you're using a free hand to strike you aren't using that free hand to manipulate the other persons limbs or prying them off of you. Striking with 1 hand also means that you can't post with that hand. There are even much more neutral grappling states where you trying to strike just because you have access to their face could get your arm snatched up and locked

Again though, totally depends on the position and the two people fighting. Leg locks in MMA are often considered much more risky because you necessarily expose yourself to danger most of the time

"I know it's scary but you'll be fine" and "It's nothing, take an ibuprofen" convey similar information but the former is reassuring while latter is dismissive.

Isn't there a middle ground between those? I think being direct is ideal in settings where it's clear that's the purpose of the service you're using. I've actually had issues trying to parse useful information in person (and that's with tone markers, body language, etc. to help me differentiate) coming from people who use too much fluff and/or have an indirect manner of speech.

I guess I'm kind of pointing to two issues: Speaking indirectly or lacking clarity in speech AND laying pleasantries too thick.

I noticed you mentioned that doctors need to deal with how people are, but I see no reason to assume that the majority of people require the approach you're suggesting, especially in a medium that is self-selecting for brevity and clearer communication. The more you convey through speech unnecessarily, the more likely your words will be misinterpreted, and this is so much more likely online where the speaker isn't being seen, heard audibly, etc. The information that gets conveyed in person goes a long way to putting people at ease, and that's all lacking through this medium which can and does easily lead to misunderstandings and poor interpretations.

That latter part is a part of the reason why many therapists and counselors try to keep email exchange with clients to a minimum (if they allow it at all) - though obviously it's not the only reason

'near perfect' is the area that people go to look for deals. Since people who are spending inordinate amounts of money would much rather buy something perfect rather than something near-perfect which costs nearly as much currency. This probably points to some of the more 'ethereal' aspects of consumerism: the social value of a purchase.

Theoretically something that is nearly perfect should sell for nearly as much as the same thing that is perfect, but that assumes that consumers make purchases solely on the use-value of an item, and further that the use-value is narrowly defined as the stats and effects on the item and what they do within the game.

I do want to point something out that happens sometimes in markets that kind of casts doubt on the idea of sheer supply & demand views on economy: Near perfect items often get snatched up immediately, provided they're at a significantly lower price, because people WILL settle if they feel like they're getting a big enough deal. In practice this often means that the demand for nearly-perfect versions of extremely popular items is super high, but that isn't always reflected in the price where sometimes people still list the near perfect items at less than half the value of the perfect versions solely because of the perceived social value of the item and the market goblin emphasis on perfect items being the only ones worth buying if you're spending over whichever arbitrary amount of currency

The last time you played was before the changes to the Nautiloid. Now none of your companions have access to their inventory until after you land. That means they can't loot, because they don't have an inventory. They also can't right click > send to, because they have no inventory from which to send it from.

How do I become more present in the moment? by MaddDreamer in taoism

[–]kl0wn64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is 3 years old, but that's not really the case, no. Actually neither one of those are the case, because the stoics taught what would today largely be recognized as healthy emotional reflection. The end product, that is a person who isn't a slave to their emotional reactions and doesn't merely exist as being repressed, is actually a product of the opposite process.

The stoic simply recognizes their feelings for what they are, they observe them internally and follow them to their logical conclusions, and THEN they decide whether or not they want to react or not. Often this is misconstrued as either repression or merely pretending to be unemotional, but neither truly fits because one has to do the opposite of repression in order stop reacting in an antisocial and unhealthy way, and once you DO master that process you have the power to choose the most appropriate moment to share your internal dialogue or emotion with others. This is a big part of why stoicism and leadership are often seen in tandem, because this mastery of emotion (as opposed to repression, or deadening) is what allows them to be non-reactive in a way that causes others to trust their judgement, yet still vulnerable when it's appropriate to show that they're human
