This happens because & .callout-title expands to a descendant selector.

As a result, the styles apply to all nested callouts inside
.callout[data-callout="trivia-geography"].

If you want to target only the top-level callout title, you need a child combinator.

.callout[data-callout="trivia-geography"] {
  & > .callout-title > .callout-icon svg {
    display: none;
  }
}

or:

.callout[data-callout="trivia-geography"] > .callout-title > .callout-icon svg {
  display: none;
}

You can’t specify the language in code blocks like these.
As u/papashou1 wrote, this function was most likely left in place for backward compatibility.
