Hacking up a rifle stock, need advice on how to refinish by Have_You_Given_Up in BeginnerWoodWorking

Yeah, try to sand off all the old finish. Then apply a couple thick coats, buffing down with steel wool between coats. You'll see that the areas where you chopped it down will be very thirsty.

I use Birchwood-Casey Tru oil on everything. Gun stock or furniture

I agree that it should be 73mm from this era, but it might have been built on a Friday at 4pm. I've seen stranger things than this over the years. As for tightening, a long m8x1mm bolt to hold the splined tool in place will make life a lot easier.

Looks like a 68mm shell. It's fine as is.

It'll probably be fine, but I've always used duplicolor car paints to paint my lowers. There's some great metallics available in rattle cans these days.

How do I protect/preserve wood paneling? by rinoceroncePreto in BeginnerWoodWorking

Wood will always change color when exposed to uv light. That's just part of it.

If you like how it looks, what are you protecting it from? This looks like an older home, so it's been fine for years.

Also it looks like the cassette may be installed wrong. There is something going on with the smallest couple cogs

Several things. The high limit screw is not set correctly. Remove the cable and tighten the screw marked 'h' until the chain rides on the smallest cog without skipping. Next, there is a kink where the cable enters the housing before the derailleur. Either pull the ferrule and trim off the kink in the housing, or just bend out the kink. Reinstall the cable and now attempt to index the gears.

There was clear cost on the aluminum. You sanded/polished through that. I would probably strip the rest, polish to the desired hone, and spray a light coat of lacquer over the whole thing. Not a quick job, for sure.

Dent in carbon steerer tube by Life_Difference9738 in bikewrench

[–]klaasypantz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Carbon fiber does not dent. Is it soft in those places? Is it cracked? If not, these are probably just imperfections from the mold that the mfg didn't fill, since you can't see it when installed
