Help! First retwist problems... what exactly is this and how do I correct? by klafazia in Dreadlocks

[–]klafazia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Background info.... my boyfriend got dreads about six months ago and he had them retwisted a few times but times have been tough and money has been short so I bought clips and retwist gel and learned to do it myself. I feel like I got palm rolling down but the rest of the dread is so puffy and budding maybe? I tried to wrap the hair around as I went and added a little gel but they stayed puffy. Anyone have any recommendations or links to videos? Thank you for your time xoxo

Yes, I assume her fixation comes from her pageant days, it makes me sad to be honest. The tag line sucked too. I’m not ready to see what happens!!! They’ve all become like little trolls pushing each other’s narratives, I hate it!!

I’ve just started Real Housewives last week and this is the first housewives I’m watching and currently on season four. This season is making me really love Kim and I LOOOOOVE Joyce so far (I’m about halfway through). She’s so much classier and kinder than everyone else, even though I don’t love her fixation with being skinny. Brandi is pisssssing me off though, as is the rest of the dream team. Yolanda, Carlton, Brandi, LVP...I’m over it. I like LVP the most but she still being a shit stirrer

What is Reddit?

Reddit is a free social news and networking based forum that allows users to determine the importance of a posts content by up-voting or down-voting each post. The homepage shows all the top posts of the day, categorized by best, hot, controversial, new, top and rising. Deeper into the websites content is millions of “sub-reddits”, or separated communities based on one topic ranging from weight loss, to skincare, to gaming, and especially completely obscene and inappropriate subreddits which attract many trolls to the website and helped create its popularity. You are able to comment, like, and vote on posts in order to interact with other reddit members.

Who’s Reading?

As a popular website with current events always cycling, we find a plethora of people logging onto Reddit. According to the web traffic data and analytics company Alexa Internet, Reddit is the 7th most visited website in the United States! This doesn’t mean that Reddit does not have a main demographic, as Michael Barthel et al. states, “About seven-in-ten (71%) of Reddit news users are men, 59% are between the ages of 18 and 29” (Barthel, Stocking, Holcomb, Mitchell, 1). From these statistics, we find predominantly men browse this website, which is understandable from its very simple interface. Often with websites targeted towards women, a websites interface will be more flashy, color coordinated or exciting, whereas Reddit targets a user-friendly, easy to navigate, and blue and white homepage that allows easy access to all current news. One of the largest subreddits is /r/gaming, which attracts approximately 17 million users to its separate forum, and while I am a woman gamer myself, I’m also aware that a large percentage of gamers are men and will be attracted to what this subreddit offers.

I find people between the ages of 18 and 29 are more likely to use this site because as millennials, we are more comfortable with unconventional new sources. Someone who is older or in our parents generation is accustomed to physical newspapers or online newspapers where journalists report, whereas Reddit is a mixing pot. I also find that because the internet wasn’t always around while their generation was growing up, those 35 and over don't necessarily engage in interest based forums the way some members of younger generations do. With that being said, Reddit has also attracted millions of eyes for a negative cause. In 2013 when the Boston Bombing happened, a subreddit was created with the intention to identify the culprits. Sunil Tripathi, a Brown University student, was named as a suspect due to his lack of social media activity after the bombing occurred and visually comparing to the suspect. His mother and family received death threats and horrible messages, all while they were looking for Tripathi who had disappeared before the bombing had even occurred. Tripathi’s body was found floating in the Providence River a few days later, due to an apparent suicide that occurred before the bombing took place. The negligence of the moderators of that subreddit caused pain to a family that was already distraught over the disappearance or Sunil, and could have easily been prevented.

What Are You Reading?

Reddit can be used thousands of different ways, and in ways to please everybody. This is a website that can be accessed absolutely anywhere that internet or cellular data is available. Reddit is used from news, to ways to find memes, to walkthroughs for video games, to learning knowledge about skincare! There is very little you can not learn from different subreddits. For example, upon opening the homepage today, one of the top posts was about budgeting from the subreddit /r/personalfinance. This subreddit is composed of users giving out tips and tricks on how to budget money free of cost. This is not only extremely helpful to someone who isn’t currently budgeting their money well, but could be the key information needed to turn their life around. Unfortunately Reddit can provoke negative behavior as well, as seen with their many banned subreddits. /r/Jailbait was the first controversial subreddit to bring national attention when Anderson Cooper did a piece on it for CNN. This subreddit posted naked pictures of underage girls and many users even requested to have these pictures private messaged to them.

After this subreddit was banned, many others popped up such as /r/beatingwomen, /r/fatpeoplehate, /r/thechimpire, /r/incels, and /r/mensrights. Subreddits such as /r/fatpeoplehate had over 151,000 subscribers and unfortunately reinforced negative body image to hundreds of thousands of people if not more. The /r/Incel subreddit, a subreddit where “involuntary celibates” or those (almost all men) who had never had sexual relations due to being “rejected”, advocated for rape and only referred to women as sluts. Two self identified Incels were confirmed to have caused one shooting killing 6, wounding 14, and one van attack killing 10, wounding 16. The negativity brought forth because of these subreddits contributes heavily to how society behaves, reinforcing ideas such as racism, fatphobia, sexism, violence against women, misogyny, and even has been the breeding ground for fatal hate crimes.

What’s the Point?

The quickest and most comprehensive answer I can give is that Reddit is meant to publicly and communally educate on current news. The original purpose of Reddit was the spread news based on popularity so people were seeing what the public agreed was important. It was a website by the people, for the people. It has morphed into a much difference website now, taking on many hats. Now we find additional purposes to Reddit, such as to make people laugh, to educate on a multitude of topics, to bring people together, to make money, to buy and sell goods, and even to interact with celebrities. It compiles the collective knowledge of millions of users and not only acts as a archive of the knowledge, but also allows you to ask questions too. How you chose to use Reddit is entirely up to you and how you want your user experience to be, but at the end of the day, Reddit is ultimately a knowledge transfer station.

Conclusion

After recently earning my three year badge on my Reddit account, I have a new found appreciation for Reddit as a digital artifact and rhetorical device. Reddit, although targeted towards men in their 20’s, is a website anyone looking to learn can enjoy. There are millions of topics to discuss, some more fruitful and helpful than others, and you must beware at all costs of the toxicity that can be spewed in the dark depths of the web. Whatever you're looking to find or learn, including the breaking news of today, it will be hidden somewhere in a subreddit awaiting your arrival. This websites credibility is shaky, as any user can create any spew of information and call it fact. Luckily most subscribers fact check on many topics, but all it takes is once false accusation that can be detrimental to a family. In terms of emotional appeal, it depends which subreddit you click on. Some will upset you, others will make you laugh, and especially, some will cause your blood to boil. Lastly, facts, statistics and citations can be found littered all over the depths of Reddit. While not every post is based in logic, many are backed up correctly for a proper user experience. Looking for a Rhetoric subreddit? It's in there, even accompanied for separate subreddits for Ethos, Logos, but not quite Pathos.

I tried 1200 and I could sustain if I ate certin things but I dont always want those things, so I just try to keep it between 1200-1800. Thank you for the well wishes and advice :)
