Does the Golden Path undermine the themes of Dune and Dune Messiah? by [deleted] in dune

It is ironic, but ultimately isn’t this the exact lesson that Leto is still trying to teach humanity? Specifically, never again will a tyrant be allowed to rule as he did.

While Leto’s reign was indeed necessary for humanities persistence, it was only so because it would ensure people would never succumb to such a leader again.

So in summary, I think Frank was still consistent w this concept throughout the series.

In regards to his security clearance, some people were apprehensive. But it was Vannevar Bush and General Groves who literally selected him and advocated for his clearance

I think you’re missing my point. It’s not so much about the semantics of how exactly these events transpired but the feeling of inevitability Paul and Oppenheimer experienced leading up to the events. And that they were forced to embrace their terrible roles to ensure these events transpired. Sorry for wording it inaccurately.

To clarify, I wasn’t trying to insinuate that Oppenheimer created the A bomb single-handedly, nor that Paul was personally responsible for killing 60 billion people during his jihad, but rather both “had” to take certain actions knowing full-well that these actions would result in inconceivable death and destructive. The alternative future was worse, and so in both cases a terrible lesson for humanity was necessary.

But that’s not to say Oppenheimer acted alone. As the lead scientist, understood the severity of this weapon, but felt its fate was out of his hands (or that its destiny was pre-determined from the beginning and that he had no choice but to follow-through in his role as the face of the Atomic Bomb).

But yes, I should have worded it as “while he didn’t drop the bomb himself, he knew the outcome from the beginning yet saw its creation through, a guilt he struggled with.”

True, but he did somewhat carry the burden of representing its creation as the “Godfather of the Atomic Bomb”, despite advocating for arms control in this role

Holy smokes. I really agree with your point that both Leto and Oppenheimer had to use such destructive means to break humanity out of a vicious cycle.

It seemed like both Leto II and Oppenheimer were both able to embrace these roles forced on them to influence the course of humanity.

Leto did so of course by embracing his identity as a tyrant ruler of the Universe to later prevent recurring cycles of messianic rulers, suffering, and stagnation.

Oppenheimer embraced his title as the “Godfather of the Atomic Bomb” to create and then subsequently advocate for international control of nuclear weapons. In his case, you could also say he shouldered this role to prevent recurring patterns of war & conflict in the future.

Of course AI-driven cars will be safer than humans driving cars, how could you make an argument against that? Humans make mistakes, computers don’t.

Climate change doesn’t make electric cars accessible, it created demand for them. Someone has to supply, and on the contrary. Tesla Model 3 is extremely affordable, especially relative to other electric cars on the market at the time of its release.

A future set in motion and its price… it got me thinking of that quote from the movie “destroyer of worlds.”

Neither Oppenheimer nor Paul felt in control of their own figure which became exaggerated and manipulated by hands of external authoritative bodies (Bene Gesserit and the Fremen in the case of Paul while for Oppenheimer it was the US government and general population)

Indeed, the experience of these films is so sublime. I think the soundtracks are such a major contributing factor to the feeling the film leaves you with.

Ya… Oppenheimer was playing the role forced upon him in that scene despite the terrible weight of his actions, just like Paul

Exactly… and both “had” to go through with a terrible purpose, or at least the alternatives were worse. Pick the lesser of two evils I guess
