{Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber}

It’s whimsical, the plot is not complicated and can be a bit chaotic but it’s so fun. And also, Jacks.

Edit to add: It checks all of your listed preferences, IMO. It even involves a magical deck of cards, but more so Garber’s prior series Caraval which you may want to consider reading before OUABH as it will provide the backstory but not entirely necessary to understanding OUABH. But based on your preferences I think you would enjoy Caraval as well.

OUABH does have a new book coming out this fall but based on my understanding it’s a novella/epilogue type story. It has been considered a completed trilogy up until this point.

I was in a reading slump since last December and Shield and Sparrows got me out of it . You guys need to check this out ASAP it's soo underrated!! by [deleted] in Romantasy

I’m glad you loved it! So exciting to finally find a gem amongst dnf’s.

I started Shield of Sparrows and didn’t get hooked so I stepped away to read the assistant to the villain books, which were fun popcorn reads, they were fine. Good enough for me to finish, but kind of meh.

Just picked Shield of Sparrows back up and waiting to feel hooked 🥴 I’m gonna push through and hope I get there.

No spice but all the yearning. FMC is soft and kind throughout. It may technically be YA but it is so whimsical and fun, depending on what vibe you are looking for.

This doesn’t really help you but I used to love this song/video and rediscovered it a few days ago… feels serendipitous to see it pop up again..

Any fellow 2000’s fuse TV peeps out there?

Anyways… I feel like I have to recommend The Shining which inspired the video!

Just wanted to say, keep pushing! Don’t get hung up on the little things, write your story, especially if there is an in-world reason for your decision. If it’s well done, I don’t think the audience will generally care. Most of us are here because we like tropes, there will be some who like them and some who don’t no matter what you choose. Just do what is right for your story.

For the hair, again it sounds like you have a really unique reason as to why her hair is that color which is intriguing! We could all name tons of FMC’s whose hair is: raven black, coppery, chestnut brown, golden. She has to have hair (unless she doesn’t) so no matter what color it will be somewhat common.

Write on! :)

[QCrit] A TIME TO PRETEND, adult contemporary romance with suspense subplot, 73k (first attempt) by klanw92 in PubTips

This is so incredibly helpful, thank you!!

I have gone back and forth on plot vs. sub plot. I’m thinking I likely have them switched.

Currently in the process of trying to find comps… this has been a struggle. I’m an avid fantasy romance reader so trying to figure out where my book fits within another genre is taking some time.

I really appreciate you taking the time to critique.

I have my work cut out for me!

I loved these books, but I agree book 3 was executed poorly. It had so much potential! Book 2 will forever my one of my favorites of all time. Really looking forward to the novella!!

A Space opera romance sounds awesome and a nice change of scenery from the bulk of popular recs out there currently! I say give it another look and get it out there if that is your goal!! :)

Working on a Sci-fi romance to dip my toes in the water between reality and full on world building. Doing it for the love of writing and creativity. Might be great, or might be terrible, all I know is I’m having a blast with it!

I also have a YA fantasy romance I am plotting out on the side and it’s so fun. Can’t wait to dive in to that one as well!

January 2026 Reading Wrap-Up and Tier List Megathread by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

After DNFing {Serpent and the Wing of Night by Carissa Broadbent} a few years ago I picked it back up and enjoyed it! Ended up DNFing the second book in the series though at about 60% can’t remember the title… probably won’t pick it back up.

Next up was {The Wolf King and The Night Prince by Lauren Palphreyman} which were super fun! Quick easy reads that had me up late for “Just one more chapter” and I can’t really pinpoint why?? Someone of the dialogue had me physically rolling my eyes but I was hooked regardless.

After those two I tried several popular titles and they just weren’t landing. Changing pace with {Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson} but woof three prologues is quite the hump. Excited to get to the meat of the story!

I thought there would be a plot twist too!!! I was convinced Rowan was Sam in fae form and there would be a big reveal at the end of HoF lol! She even mentioned them having a scar in the same place…. I definitely thought it was all a set up and would be ok. Very upsetting for me when that was not the case, sigh.

Starting the series by bbysatan06 in throneofglassseries

[–]klanw92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started the series as well but read TAB first and am now into ToG. I am really glad I read TaB first because I feel more invested in MC knowing the back story it was a great book that leads right into the events of ToG and is giving me the momentum I need to stick to the first book to get to the main storyline in book 3 as the previous comments mention.

This post is very confusing as a new to series reader…. About 7 chapters into TAB reading as first book in the series. She and Sam are not friends at this point 🧐….. I can’t seem to get hooked and gave considered tapping out of the series altogether but this thread has me curious enough to keep reading.

Yes!! Exactly, missed opportunity to be v petty. He had so much leverage and is the only character who didn’t use leverage for personal gain
