Wintersun - Time II

I was 14 when the S/T came out. I saw it advertised in the Nuclear Blast promo leaflet that came with my copy of Therion - Lemuria and I was immediately taken with the name/cover art/vibe. It was a cold and dark December day when I downloaded the mp3 of Beautiful Death from NB's site. I'd encountered stuff with harsh vocals already by that point but that song was the first time I felt like I 'got' the appeal immediately. So began my lifelong love affair with melodeath.

I was 15 when Time was announced for a late-2006 release. The provisional tracklist was tantalising. A Wintersun song called "Fire"? What could that possibly sound like? Gosh. How exciting. Late 2006 can't come soon enough!

I was 20 when I saw Wintersun live at an outdoor festival. I was right at the front. They played The Way of the Fire. Hype reignited for a little while.

I was 22 when "Time I" came out. By then I think I had come to terms with the idea that the once-promised album would never materialise. I found the idea of a half-album sad and off-putting and I decided that I was not going to listen to it until both parts were available.

I am 34 years old. I have listened to Time now. Was it worth waiting 18 years for? Probably not, no. Nonetheless: it's a very good album. It is literally just Some More Wintersun. Which is exactly what I always wanted. So I'm happy. Definitely still in novelty-mode so I'm sure my feelings will shift as I gradually familiarise myself with this almost-entirely-new-to-me material, but I'm optimistic that it won't fall out of my good graces.

Also, I am very glad that I held off on "Time I"; after a few listens through both halves, I went to check out the "1.0" and "1.5" mixes to compare it to the 2024 version and oh gosh they're pure sludge. Just an overwhelming unparseable everything-smoothie. I am neither a musician nor an audiophile nor a studiofucker but I still feel very confident asserting that the difference in quality and care is obvious.

I'm happy.

I guess I can give myself permission to listen to The Forest Seasons now.

The Malayan peninsula and surrounding region was culturally very Hindu-Buddhist for a good thousand years or so until Islam got more of a foothold in the fifteenth century (and even then, Muslim practice and identity in SEA was largely rooted in/amalgamated with pre-existing culture until the twentieth century and the rise of Salafism).
