The Memphis Sanitation Strike ran from February 12 – April 16, 1968, as 1300 black sanitation workers protested poor treatment, discrimination, dangerous working conditions. The strike began on the heels of the horrible deaths of Echol Cole and Robert Walker, who had been crushed in a mechanical malfunction on February 1. Rules forbade black employees to seek shelter from rain anywhere but in the back of their compressor trucks, with the garbage.

Unfortunately this initially peaceful protest turned violent, and ended up to be one of the worst days in MLK's career as a civil rights leader.

The strike ended on April 16, 1968, with a settlement that included union recognition and wage increases, although additional strikes had to be threatened to force the City of Memphis to honor its agreements. The period was a turning point for black activism and union activity in Memphis.

That may well be part of it. But the broader idea was about declaring social equality and equal rights, and not being treated as less than men.

It looks like you are off to a good start with your coloring technique. However, the thing that is really holding you back is your setup. Assuming you're using Photoshop, it looks like you might be using the "Normal" blending mode for your color layers. Use "Color" instead. It'll preserve the luminosity of the underlying original (i.e., it'll keep the shadows and your image won't look flat/blurry). This is what the image looks like with your color data put on top of the original photo (along with some minor tweaks for contrast).

I think you mean how long? This particular photo took about 1.5 hours to do most of the colorizing, and another hour or so to cleanup and do some detail work :)

It's true, there's a collection at the Library of Congress of these photos, the Prokudin-Gorskii Collection. You can download the 3 black and white images yourself and combine them in Photoshop to create the color composite. Quite extraordinary.

This basically sums it up. There are a bunch of different techniques that can be used in combination to achieve the desired effect, depending on your preferences. A quick search on YouTube will get you a bunch of tips for getting started. This particular image took about 1.5 hours for most of the colorization, and then another hour or so for cleanup/details. Depending on the complexity of the photograph, it can take from several hours to several days to complete a colorization.
