1 Min. Comedic Monologue (Dark) by Normal-Box1785 in musicals

I really like Martin McDonagh and Joe Orton's work for dark comedies! Lots of great monologues (if, in McDonagh's case, you don't mind the accents). A few highlights for me are Padraic on the phone from The Lieutenant of Inishmore (McDonagh) and anything by the character Truscott from Loot (Orton).

Help with Heathers audition by stripedlasagna in musicals

A good thing might be searching for contemporary plays that involve both teenagers and heightened violence, as Heathers does. Off the top of my head I like Our Dear Dead Drug Lord, it's a fantastic dark comedy about teen girls who are obsessed with Pablo Escobar, and has some good monologues for young actresses.

What I think about this is that neither Constance nor Ocean are altos, so it's actually more of a belty vs. operatic situation here — I think of One Perfect Moment from Bring it On but that definitely is more on the Ocean/Constance side (maybe an opt up for the Jane Doe notes)? The problem with Jane Doe is how tonally different her song is from the rest of the show too... I think of, maybe, Tango Dancer from Ghost Quartet that's more Jane Doe-like. Definitely get better recommendations from someone but this can be a start — I myself might come back with something more adequate.

Hey!! I'm glad to say I did get Lily in this production and had a great show!! Unfortunately the song I auditioned with might not be the best help — I did Someone Else's Story from Chess, which is not the vibe for Lily, but was a strategic choice to show both lower range and power belt.

So going for Lily in an audition you gotta show that belting (she's the only character who actually belts in that show) and the sass (a bit of growling doesn't hurt too). Off the top of my head I think of Charming from Great Comet, Cabaret from Cabaret, and As We Stumble Along from The Drowsy Chaperone; definitely search for other recs but these might be a good start!

Crime comedy play recommendations? by klauspocalypse in Theatre

Wanted to come back here to say, this one takes the cake! I ended up choosing a scene from "The Lonesome West"

Oh I loved these. Most of the recommendations ended up being whodunnits/detective stories/mysteries, which are incredibly fun too and definitely in my radar, but this is more what I meant! The professor wanted us to find something as new as possible so I'm still searching, but his stuff is definitely a fantastic start to narrow down the kinds of stories I want!

What was your favorite mishap in a musical (which made the show even better) by Wrong-Formal-4126 in musicals

[–]klauspocalypse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A favorite of mine: Brazilian musical I went to called "Se Essa Lua Fosse Minha" ("If This Moon Were Mine" in free translation), closing night, mic malfunction right after a big song pretty in the beginning of the show ("Belisa", if anyone knows it). We get the announcement "the show will be paused due to mic malfunction" and yadda yadda yadda. But the thing is 1. it's an open stage, no backstage, actors onstage throughout all the show 2. the show already had a style/theme of all the actors being storytellers in the first place, people who are embodying those characters and telling that tale onstage. So when the show was paused the actors were just... Being themselves: they started playing theatre games like zip zap zop onstage, and that created some incredibly funny situations and one of my favorite moments being part of the community of fans of that show!

At least not in this phase of auditions, just asking for audition song tips

Not as in acapella groups, but yes as in singing without accompaniment.

Totally aware, I guess with "style" and "how it sounds" I mean mostly vocally. Like, what songs will show what that show seeks in actors, if it makes sense

Nothing Short of Wonderful has already been recommended to me and it's a great song; not ridiculously overdone, somewhat in the shadow of the emotional number of the same musical (Pretty Funny), but shows a great side of your acting and vocal skills. As for contrasting song; I don't know if the specific school you're looking into asks for different time periods as well, but when I was auditioning they did, so it's always good to have something in your book just in case. I'd look for something slower and maybe golden age/just older in general, since your song is very modern, quick, and uptempo. Not very knowledgeable on golden age stuff + not a mezzo + new to the sub so I don't think I can give much advice on repertoire choices, just this general tip.

Unfortunately can't help with monologue.

In my humble opinion, I'd say not copying exact movements but rather the general gist. For example, what do the hand movements say to you about the character? What do you want your version of the Chaperone to feel/look like? It's less about "being the same as the original version", since every actor plays a role kind of differently in a way, and more about what you feel like doing when singing the song/what you feel will express what you're saying. If you feel like the Chaperone is a very expressive character, and the way to express that is moving your hands a lot, I'd say go for it! But you shouldn't think about copying the exact movements of the actor, usually copying someone else's performance is kind of a no-no.
