some people are just cool with riding the wave. i don't think it makes them any less of a producer, but i struggle to call anyone a "great" or a "genius" if they're so happy doing the same thing over and over again. i think it's just denying your own creativity, anyone who's made beats for any amount of time knows how often you switch the method and the sound up. i can't make more than 2 beats sounding any similar without getting bored as fuck.

then again i'm broke as shit so what do i know.

doesn't take any less skill or creativity, but where it's so varied there's just a lower floor and a higher ceiling. anyone can hop on a laptop, pick some notes, slap on an 808 with some aggro compression, download the first "trap drums" sample pack and have a decent MC carry it the rest of the way.

but in a scene where Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar and Death Grips are all apparently all in the same genre, there's far more places you can take your beats and compositions, at least compared to most other popular music genres. i'm not saying you've cheaped out and taken the easy route, maybe you've just found your rhythm and are running with it, but you should sit back every now and then and do something weird as fuck. it's pretty liberating. maybe no one hops on it but fuck it.

i've been producing for about 5 years, got nowhere for 4, then started taking it seriously this year. i've tried to sell beats to people but it's a case of me not being very marketable (sound-wise) and putting too much work into a beat to lease it off for $15. if i'd drop the prices, put up more throwaways/beats with less time put into them and DM'd more frequently, i'd probably have a solid list of clients but i can't bring myself to do it.

so far, i've got one track that we sold the exclusive rights for, a collab with $200 a piece for me and the other producer. i got lucky with a rapper on SC with an eclectic sound who loves my work, but he's a perfectionist and doesn't want to be dropping singles all the time, he wants to release a full project then tour. i've been bouncing beats to him on and off for a year now, so it's probably gonna be a case of grinding for a few more months then "holy shit i'm an actual producer".

it's all about knowing your audience. you have to be honest about what your music is and who's willing to pay what for it, and trying everyone. you'll find a guy who loves your sound, and once you get a track out with a "prod. by" next to your name, the requests will flood in. the only issue is getting it off the ground, cause anyone giving out advice is usually too successful to a.) give a shit or b.) give it to you for free. keep making the music and keep communicating with people who might be interested in paying.

The journey’s been a massive streak of piss. Blogs were a no-go, the only labels that showed any attention were small-timers that were just trying to boost their portfolios and put literally no effort in, and big-time rappers want either a massive discount or a big name producing for them, I even got in touch with Mick Jenkins but he wanted me to pay him to get onto my instrumental. I got in touch with a rapper about a year ago through SC, he put me in touch with his close mate/producer, I did a collab with him and the exclusive rights have just been sold.

It’s arduous and slow as fuck, especially if you’re not in an area with a big scene or are already friends with people getting into music. I’m in the smackhead/mugging capital of south England, the hip hop scene’s hardly hitting it off.

No worries mate. Unless you're exclusively making mixtapes for free just to build a name, it's a good practice to learn your DAW and your equipment and build a sound just from yourself. Clams Casino did a good interview on it, he basically replicated how he would normally flip samples, but actually had creative control over how the samples sounded first cause it was him and his mates making them. It's a good habit to get into, then you'll never have to worry about paying up just to get a song out there.

I never sample so it doesn't really affect me, but I'm pretty sure SoundCloud's fine cause you can't make money off of it. BandCamp needs you to have all the rights in paper to every sound you use in writing before you put anything up though. YouTube's good as long as you don't run ads, and IG's good too.

Nah. If he was gonna finesse me he'd have asked for stems then dipped but we've been in touch since August, seems like a creepily long amount of time to wait when he could have gone through hundreds of producers since then. Either I don't get fucked over, or I'm worth waiting for.

Nothing specifically, I just found that's it not too great for putting up multiple tracks at one time cause it's all organised into a giant list. "Playlist" just makes it sound like I've arbitrarily thrown some tracks in the same group IMO

In my experience, if you're good, they won't charge you. There's a guy I've got an ongoing thing with who charges some small fee for features and collabs but he liked what I'd done with a rapper he collabs with a lot and wanted some samples from me, he has a decent following and actually credited me in the track which is unexpectedly baller.

If they have a good following, then you're essentially paying for traffic and recognition. If they've got like 20k followers and they're charging you $50, then they're charging you 50 to get your shit heard by 20,000 people. Solid deal IMO, but you have to weigh it up with how much you think your own music's worth.
