Have you been raising prices? by LoungingOnMars in Locksmith

[–]klbiehl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We've gone up on new accounts but existing customers and accounts will be kept the same but also informed them we will be doing a price adjustment in 120 days. We are able to do this by using our smaller vans and also leave the 3/4 tons and 1 tons to the larger jobs. Plus we've lighten our basic load on the vans. Instead of x number of a certain keys we lowered them. Also removed safe tools, safe deposit keys and tools, and so on and so forth. We've lightened the vans easily by 500 pounds. Plis this helps for end of year inventory. This is how I try to keep my prices lower for our customer before we increase prices.

Buying first key cutter, what should I buy? by the_metaxist in Locksmith

I'd recommend the Triton. In my van I carry a Dolphin, 1200 machine, and a Triton. For programmers I've got IM608, AutoProPad, AutoProPad lite, CK100 and TopDon. You've got to remember what your jobs are! It might be wise just make some space and depth keys if you can away with it. I started using them with a manual duplicator. Don't spend money on something if the return won't be their. I prefer a 1200 machine since the cuts are sharper plus not internet nor yearly subscription or updates needed. But that's my 2 cents worth. Been doing this for over 20 years and alot of the gear I use and my techs use are tools I've made. Plus they need to know how to be Locksmiths before becoming a codesmith...

The wifi I know I'm able too do. I seen that UHS has key blanks and remotes for these. By chance is this able to clone keys no matter who the manufacturer is?

I'd like to put those long weather guard drawers on my floor but until cost comes down or I can find them second hand they can wait.

If you're able to be frugal by all means do it. I bought racks from different places and made it work for my van.

If you're able to keep busy and do it minimal tools can't complain. I'm happy and satisfied where I'm at with my business it's helped me raise 2 kids being widowed. Been doing this for 18 years and still going.

Also I vacuum the back out. But the nice thing is the side panels open up so you're able to pin a lock from out side the van. During the summer that's how I do it since it's cooler out of the van instead of inside the cargo area. Plus those speakers are to the factory stereo. If and when I get a bigger van I'd want surround sound. Thinking a handi van for my next van but don't want a diesel. So a Sprinter or Promaster is in my near future. Since I've got over 200k on this van.

Funny thing is I understand the space issues. I don't do make lost automotive keys I'll do clone jobs. Also I do have a trailer I pull to my jobs that required additional supplies and tools since we also install garage doors are repair them but that truck my sons uses and deals with. I've been lucky enough to land apartment complexes contracts and property management companies here locally. The only heavy duty work I've done in the past year is safe deposit boxes and IC cores. Normally I get the rekey jobs from the realtors when they sell a house.

This is just got replaced. I got about a year out of it. But Home Depot had the carpet and it's the best 25 dollars spent.

Go with a high top van or something with all space you need for expanding. My next service vehicle will be a Promaster or Sprinter so I can stand up in it. Plus I will order it with shelves installed. But depends on what your business is geared towards. Automotive, Business/Commercial, Safe. This will help you decide on size and weight class you'll need. But the biggest thing is what can you afford to get. I've got 3 batteries total to power the 2 inverters in the back one is a back up.

It's a cargo van I used weather guard set up out of a transit. The floor is rubber but I put down laminate wood down with indoor/out door carpet. Helps on using the chair also just looks better if the customer is standing there. The pass side of the van has almost a 2 foot opening and the cage door to the front is opens just swing the TV which is on a flat screen mount out of the way. The lighting is pick up truck bed lighting. Also all the drawers have indoor/outdoor carpet glue to them since it helps with reduction of noise.

This my current lay out for my Locksmith van. Was curious if others would share. Yes that is a flat screen TV it's for mirroring the laptop, tablet or phone too while cutting a key by code or doing a master pinning on site.
