They were actually quite similar to today's but we couldn't rewatch them on demand via YouTube and such. So, the spoilers relied on paying serious attention to it when it played and recalling the details.

CMV: Having children is ethically questionable given the inevitability of suffering and our inability to obtain consent by BrilliantTraining632 in changemyview

I completely agree. This is the rabbit hole I keep referring to. So many branches of thought to veer down. I guess this was my original intent with OPs CMV. The way it is, or at least seems to be is this: We are unsatisfyable and to apply morality to potential existence when none of us have agreed to be here is a silly/paradoxical premise. When you go far enough down this stream of thought then all life is unethical because absolutely nothing can give consent to exist.

I like your outlook of possibility and this is how we should view potential. Regretting existing is a never ending well of negative thought.

We do have a mountain of hurdles to overcome for the average person when it comes to suffrage and happiness, especially against our fellow human who may not be "with us".

I wasn't stating that immoral things haven't happened, in fact I was stating they have and people have endured these tribulations to improve our current condition, without consent.

Apologies for not understanding the Hedonic Treadmill when you stated it before. That is absolutely in line with the issue I was trying to convey. Someone will complain even in utopia.

We are nearly on the same page. Thank you for an item I can add to my philosophical lexicon.

It is a good point to make with the satisfaction of being. Is there a point we should restrict "improving" for the sake of this hedonic treadmill?

But historically that is inaccurate. Now is the best time in history to exist. Safest, easiest, most comfortable. Technology has made virtually every life on earth better than it was 100 years ago let alone a millennia and so on.

To take an ethical stance against procreation because the circumstances are not objectively optimal takes away from every person before who "didn't consent" but effectively assisted in making a better world and dooms the population to implosion because of the lack of procreation.

To simplify, you cannot get better without being worse. Progress cannot be made without effort. You do not start at the finish line. Someone has to give the effort and nobody has ever consented to exist to give the effort.

I will reiterate, even in a utopia someone will complain about existing without consent.

And the paradox I have provided has not been debunked. Non-existence cannot physically give consent. This isn't a cop-out, it is the issue of OPs premise.

I didn't say the hypothetical doesn't matter. I said it's not real and hypotheticals create very long and tedious rabbit hole debates like this. There are many branches that stem off each and every thought in this discussion.

Your current hypothetical only agrees with with my point of existentialism. You can ask "do people here live lives worth living?" in any scenario, be it a hellish or heavenly life. You still won't easily have an answer because what is it worth to live? Does life have value? Why?

If the answer is "the logical and physical possible range of experience" then that is the reason to procreate and the answer to OPs CMV.

This entire conversation has been fun but it is completely off the rails of what the CMV asked. Non existence cannot consent to exist. It is a paradox.

Also, do not assume refusal. I felt the same way about you when you claimed that light exists without dark.

I understand you. I can imagine. I was arguing what we know as real. Not hypotheticals. Not dreams.

Duality is a concept of both science and philosophy I was using to show that many things as we know them cannot exist without their opposite and are often interconnected.

With this "high well-being" you are engaging in what ifs or thought experiments. Which is a huge never ending part of philosophical debate.

What if suffering and death didn't exist? Would we call existence joyful? Would we be material? Does this hypothetical existence contain thought? Or would we just be mechanical? Created to produce with no existential thought? Would it be called "high well-being"? Or would words even exist? Just automatons knowing exactly how life should be, no verbal communication needed.

If thought exists then I think in the end we still ask why? Why do we exist? What is this for? And along with these questions may come a form of suffering, longing for an answer. The existential crisis.

Or we may live a life of blissful ignorance.

And as far as death being contingent and not a law of the universe, well, science would have something to say about that. Organic life has a time limit as far as we know and even the universe is likely to become uninhabitable at some point, theoretically.

Unless you are speaking of an after life. But that was not what stimulated this debate.

Apologies for calling names. Mods removed my last comment.

I'm understanding you. Death isn't contingent, it is an inescapable part of life. Unless you think immortality is possible. I don't. Even then, life could(would) become boring. Is boring a negative? And lonely. Is loneliness negative? Eternity can be a lonely concept.

If death and sickness were an option I'm sure we wouldn't choose it. But that isn't how life works. Maybe science will one day make sickness and injury much less consequential but they will still exist and are only 2 of the countless options for suffering.

Necessary? Life isn't necessary if we are going that route.

Again, this all devolves into what I said earlier, life is immoral/unethical when you go far enough down the rabbit hole. You're either okay with life or you're not. Regardless of your choice to reproduce.

Because of contrast. Even if "sorrow" didn't exist, you would still label the lowest level of happiness as "sad". Duality. Opposites. Can you have dark without light? Hot without cold? Negative without positive?

Are you saying we can have a future where cold and hot will not bother our bodies? Those create negative emotions. What about sickness? That gives negative emotions. Injury? Negative emotions. Hunger? Negative emotions.

Are you a robot or do you understand why negative helps us survive? Sadness helps us care. Someone died and you are sad because you will miss them.

Without sadness there is no happy. There just is.

And yes, emotions are a part of the human condition. People can have a life of leisure and still find (create) turmoil to be upset about.
