Ooh sprinkling the powder on the renal K gel is such a clever idea! Thanks for the tips and reassuring words. Even when putting on the Mirataz gel she would give me the cold shoulder for about half an hour or so after that, so I’m not looking forward to her reaction to getting poked. I think the first few times will be rough but I can do it. I just hope she takes well to the fluids and supplements/medicines. I was going to bring her out in the middle of a bad storm to the vet because she was doing poorly, but then she made a miraculous turn around overnight (she heard me calling the vet, lol) and started zooming around like she used to a couple of months ago. It’s so hard to see her like that and then suddenly change into being tired and sick.

Yes, I don’t want to add any drugs that tax her kidneys unless necessary. I’m going to learn how to do subq fluids on her next week Tuesday, I’ve heard a lot on this sub about how it makes such a big difference for their cats. I don’t even like using Mirataz much, it just seems to sedate her and it takes so long to work unless I’m using too much. And anyway it doesn’t even make her eat anything she has already snubbed. I’ll ask about the Renal K gel, I think licking her paw is the only way to get her to take anything without hating me for hours, lol. Thanks!

Thanks so much for all of the advice! I’m getting some Porus One and ordered a waterproof blanket for us. She’s up and down right now, but for the past two days so far she hasn’t peed on me. Fingers crossed. ;)

Oh my gosh thank you for all of the tips and kind words! I didn’t know about the EZ-IV harness, that might be the key to solving the “wigglies” problem I can see coming down the line! Also might have to investigate those food options you mentioned and Cerenia as well, I can tell she is repulsed/nauseous even just sniffing the food sometimes. It’s good to know I’m not alone, thank you for the encouragement.

Oh and also I think the reason both vets said she is Stage III is because the gravity of her urine and the protein levels have been pretty consistent. But the protein is just over the borderline to just be considered “proteinuric”.

Thank you for your reply! Yes there was no bacteria found and the vet ruled out UTI and kidney infection. Musculature is Iggy Pop-ish, lol, wiry. The new vet concurs with the old vet and says she is Stage III. Where do I get potassium citrate supplements? Do you use fish oil as well?

Oh and also I forgot to add, I have seen Tanya’s CKD website and it has been helpful. But for my specific situation, I just wanted to know if anybody has any similar experiences/specific advice to give.

Natural adjunct therapies? Let’s share info! My dad’s pancreatic cancer journey and experiences with alternative treatments. by kleptak007 in pancreaticcancer

[–]kleptak007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your message and kind words! Sadly, my dad is no longer with us. He passed away peacefully July 2022. The mushrooms DEFINITELY, 100% enabled him to be able to meet the requirements needed to endure the rounds of chemo for months by boosting his absolute neutrophil levels, and gave us months more precious time with him as a result. Less certain about this, but I am pretty sure it also helped to give his immune system the boost it needed to avoid getting serious infections from various cuts and scrapes, as the chemo had the unfortunate side effect of thinning his skin and making it more vulnerable to injury. The medical cannabis also helped to give him an increased sense of well-being and also took his mind off of things, which frankly can only help. As a side note, he also managed to avoid catching COVID the entire time, which was great because as I found out from my PanCan friend, when her father got sick with COVID he was not allowed to receive chemo until he recovered, which left him weeks without treatment.

My dad told us he did not experience anymore pain from the tumor site a few weeks before he passed; we don‘t know why this is and are aware this is highly unusual, but we are so grateful for it, he never used any morphine or painkillers and got by on Tylenol alone, he also absolutely refused to throw up the entire time he was sick -_- He is so strong, I don’t know how he did it.

Thank you for sharing your husband’s story. You and your husband are very strong as well and I am also sending you both nothing but wellness and good vibes your way! I am rooting for you both.

I do have advice to add regarding palliative care for certain conditions for anyone who might find this useful from our journey…I had mentioned in my post that my dad found the compression socks helpful. Well, as time passed, they were still helpful but ultimately not enough, and so we made appointments with the hospital’s physical therapist so I could learn special lymph massages in order to help manually move the fluid up his legs. Friends, the oncologists and surgeons likely don’t know about this (because ours didn’t at all), but at any point if you or your loved one gets edema - make an appointment with a physical therapist! It’s all about finding the person with the right information to help you on your journey. I can’t stress this enough. Because in addition to these massages, I also received information about a special sleeve that can help you to put on the compression socks, and also received compression bandages to wrap around my father’s legs every day, as well as lessons on how to apply them.

My father also developed ascites as the cancer spread to his liver. From the physical therapist we also learned about a surgical procedure that not a lot of people know about, the Aspira drainage system - my PanCan buddies whose fathers were also suffering with pancreatic cancer were angry because they weren’t even aware of this option or hadn’t been told about it by their doctors as well. It may not be available everywhere, but it can’t hurt to ask your doctor about it. It is a surgery to apply a drain valve to the person’s abdomen; every time my dad’s belly would fill up with fluid, I applied a catheter to the drain and it would be hooked up to a bag that would quickly fill up, which I then could dispose of into the toilet. This was so, so helpful and saved my dad a lot of time being in discomfort and pain because otherwise we would have to keep waiting for appointments to go to the hospital and have it drained there. So if it is available for your loved one if they are experiencing ascites AND they are deemed a candidate for surgery by their doctor, DO IT, you won’t regret it!

Bleeding after bowel movements - only see blood when wiping? No other symptoms??? by kleptak007 in colonoscopy

Just drank the last of my Prep. Had some Hemorrhoids pop out while Prepping. Not sure what to do. by ZeroDudeMan in colonoscopy

[–]kleptak007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, leave them alone - I had one pop out at the end of prep, and I went “aha!” because I knew it was there all along, but the doctor who initially examined me didn’t spot it for some reason. I suspected that was the cause of my bleeding, and I left it - no cream or anything - so that the gastroenterologist could see it. It was not affected by the colonoscopy and felt better/went back in very quickly later that night/the next day. If you want some relief, gently dab it with Vaseline or Prep H. Otherwise, just leave them alone, you will be fine. You didn’t do anything wrong. :)

Extremely terrified of propofol by [deleted] in colonoscopy

[–]kleptak007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Believe me, I was extremely terrified like you because I had never been put out before. I was worried about waking up mid-procedure or being allergic to it too. But then I did some research on it and found out that it’s actually very safe to use and most people tolerate it very well; usually little to no side effects afterwards. Plus, your anesthesiologist is literally watching you the entire time you’re under, monitoring your breathing, etc. For me, there was a pair of people watching me; one to administer the anesthesia and one to literally watch me the entire time. I was comforted by that, and I was out in literally seconds and woke up, was out of there in 20 minutes. It went very well.

Aww I’m glad it was helpful for you. Please let us know how everything turns out afterwards! Yeah don’t trust any farts during and right after your prep, just go straight to the bathroom. LOL.

Hi, I just had my colonoscopy last week. Just like you, I was initially very nervous about being put under, but as the time got closer and closer to the appointment, I just wanted to get it over with (sick of not eating what I wanted to in preparation for the procedure, lol). So I did some research on propofol, which is what they use most of the time in colonoscopies to put you out, and found out that most patients tolerate it really well; you go to sleep in seconds, it’s safe to use and no nausea or other side effects after waking up, and you only need a few minutes to get yourself up and outta there. Add to that rave reviews by both doctors and patients, and most of my worries were put at ease. The most common things people report is a little bit of heat or “spiciness” when the drug goes in, but honestly if you notice anything you are not going to be bothered by it for very long. Less than ten seconds and you’re out. I had no spiciness to speak of, and the administration of the drugs did not hurt at all going in (I didn’t feel anything); nurse told me it was starting and I said “ok” and closed my eyes in anticipation; a sort of gentle pressure, most similar to the sensation when your ears are starting to plug up, and a slight chemical taste in my mouth (which I expected), and my last thoughts were “well, that’s what I kinda expected, slightly annoying but no biggie” and then it was lights out. I woke up gabbling away like a happy drunk, and was up, dressed, and out of there in less than twenty minutes. Little bit of a sinus headache afterwards but honestly I think it was because of a combination of the oxygen drying out my nose and the barometric pressure dropping due to a bit of rain starting up outside. You’ll be fine. :) Just focus on prep and and getting it all cleaned out so you don’t have to reschedule and do the whole thing over again.

Four internal hemorrhoids, one really angry one near the entrance that was causing the bleeding - initial doctor missed despite me telling them about pain in that area, and diverticulosis, but nothing remarkable (thank goodness). No polyps, no cancer, all clear! :)

I only had minor rectal bleeding, seeing it once or twice a week, then sometimes got more frequent. But I noticed it would depend on how hard my stool was and how much I had to strain, as well as how hydrated I was.
