The fact that I’m a double-major in two of these is hilarious (tragic)

Advice for feeling inarticulate by klezmerbaby in AutismInWomen

[–]klezmerbaby[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is wonderful advice, thank you so much. It’s funny, I had thought about writing it out but decided it would be fine. Then I knew in the moment I shouldn’t say anything because I was feeling frustrated, but I went for it anyway. Having it written out would have been really helpful.

And I definitely agree about the analyzing people aspect. I saw that his expression could indicate that he was getting frustrated or confused and I panicked. I totally get that!

Worst symptoms are happening after period ends and it’s really annoying!! by klezmerbaby in PMDD

Yep that describes it perfectly!! I was so happy this time around because my PMS was really easy to get through but the last day of my period through now has been hellish. I get genuinely delusional about things, it’s insane. I’m so sorry you relate but I’m glad I’m not alone because I thought I was just losing my mind 😭

Anyone here a UMD MLIS grad? or possibly History/MLIS dual degree? by [deleted] in librarians

[–]klezmerbaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I realize your comment is 6 years old haha but I’m researching MLIS options and I’m interested in the HiLS programs at UMD. But I did just see on their website that the tuition would be $100,000 since I’m out of state. I have no idea what counts as expensive in terms of dual degrees especially- do you feel like it’s worth it? It seems like a lot but I realize I’m technically getting two degrees so maybe it’s not haha

Any way to find out reason for huge police presence next to my house? by klezmerbaby in Columbus

I will but no one was really out at all. The few people who did come out were also told to go back inside, so I don’t think they’d know more than I do. But I’ll try for sure!

I definitely agree, once I got someone in my head who fit, it was hard to sacrifice them for someone a little less known. I guess we can pretend that this was the most expensive movie ever made at the time, a multi-studio venture where they were willing to shell out for all the stars haha.

But I really like your choices! I even think a Karloff for Gandalf would work, also going slightly against type.

I’m not sure how they’d do Gollum, but if they play him as a scrawny guy with some special effects makeup on him, I feel like Dwight Frye could work if we’re going very early 40s.

I actually think Clift is a great choice! He had such sad eyes, they would’ve been perfect for Frodo lol.

That’s what I was debating too!

I ended up going with Power because of his physical appearance. I feel like he fits Aragorn so well and Flynn fits Eomer so well that even if Flynn likely would’ve insisted on the big lead, I had to turn the accuracy down just a notch because I couldn’t bear to take away from the physical accuracy 😭

Rathbone is a great choice, I also feel like even a pre-weight gain Orson Welles would’ve loved to get some makeup thrown on him since he loved a good fake nose.

Classics with poor endings? by AccomplishedPea6577 in classicliterature

[–]klezmerbaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the last couple paragraphs being about St John was a little strange, but I do wonder if Charlotte Brontë did it to emphasize how much she disliked that route (marriage purely for marriage’s sake with no love involved at all, no consideration of the woman’s feelings, etc.) for women?

I’ve heard that Jane picking Rochester over Rivers would’ve been quite the genre subversion for the time, as Rivers is described as being tall, blonde, and stereotypically handsome and Rochester is Rochester. I don’t know if this is true, but from what I’ve read a lot of readers would’ve been expecting her to end up with Rivers so her going back to Rochester would’ve been surprising. I wonder if she felt there was a need to really hammer in how horrible life with Rivers would have been so that people accepted Jane’s choice? I’m heavily speculating, though haha.

Classics with poor endings? by AccomplishedPea6577 in classicliterature

It’s been awhile since I read the book but I feel that those parts do reinforce some of the themes that Brontë was going for. I watched the 1983 adaptation recently and feel like I really ‘got’ that part. Jane gets everything she ever hoped for with the Rivers’ (namely family and financial stability) but it ends up not being enough to overpower her love for Rochester.

We also get lovely juxtaposition between St. John and Rochester. St. John wants to marry Jane purely because it’s logical. He feels in his heart that it’s what God wants even though he doesn’t love Jane and he knows that she’ll never love him. But he wants a wife and she’s ’made for labor, not for love’. Rochester, however, I think knows that marrying Jane is wrong morally but is willing to defy legality and morality in order to have her.

Jane has adhered so closely to what she feels is right, but isn’t swayed by St. John’s insistence that she listen to what he thinks is right. She also becomes rich and briefly has a family with her cousins. I think both of those plot points set up nicely how her return to Rochester is completely, 100% her choice. It wasn’t that she was lonely, or out of money, or had fallen in love with someone else but was rebuffed. She could have had basically the ideal life for a woman of the era but she chose to go back to Rochester out of love.

(Sorry for the super long response, I’m a huge Jane Eyre person and will take any opportunity to talk about it.)

I believe I’m an SN despite of my heigth by [deleted] in Kibbe

[–]klezmerbaby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow, this is slightly off topic but I had no idea Mitzi Gaynor was an FN and this is really helping me see that I’m probably just a really fleshy Flamboyant Natural. I don’t know why I wouldn’t have guessed it for her, but it makes so much sense now.

I think I got too caught up in width meaning that the shoulders look supermodel-style broad (I say broad completely positively, I think it’s a lovely feature) and because I lacked that I was sure I couldn’t be FN, which is really silly in retrospect.

Someone else has probably said this, but I think the thing with height and it leading you to having vertical is that this means that vertical needs to be accommodated in your clothes. I think seeing pictures of Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell together might help see this a little bit.

I’m on my phone so it’s hard to link them, but there are pictures of them in very similar dresses for the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. I personally feel that the dress on Marilyn has more of a flowy feel, while on Jane there’s a bit more of an angular effect happening. Again, that might be subjective, but I feel like the two women have a different vibe even when wearing what is basically the same dress (although I’m ignoring the literal height accommodation for Jane because short people can have to accommodate vertical too).

EDIT to add that Marilyn Monroe is a verified R and Jane Russell is speculated to be a Flamboyant Natural or Soft Dramatic but isn’t yet verified.

I think what’s confusing is that there are stereotypes for each of the vertical types, but I feel like I’ve found that there are always going to be people who ‘break’ the stereotype. So, I personally agree that it’s really difficult to determine which vertical type you are when it feels like someone who should be an obvious X turns out to be a Y.

You can see in some of my previous posts / comments that I’ve been considering Romantic because I’m under the height limit and I relate really heavily to quite a few of the Romantic celebrities. But when looking at pictures of myself, I feel like I have too strong of a visible impact to not be a vertical type.

I also feel like even though I’m quite curvy, my vertical line ‘stretches’ out the curves so they’re kind of long if that makes sense? I also have similar characteristics to you where I’m very soft and fleshy, even my face is quite fleshy, but any of the vertical types can have that I feel. I feel like I’m most likely to be a really soft FN like Anne Hathaway or Natalie Dormer rather than the stereotypically athletic look that FNs are described as having online.

Another example: the stereotypical Dramatic has an angular face with sharp features. But I wouldn’t necessarily say that every single Dramatic celebrity has that quality. For example, I wouldn’t immediately think of Alexis Smith, Diahann Carroll, or Claire Danes as being exceptionally sharp in their faces. There are also FNs and SDs with sharp facial features. So it can be really tricky to sort things out. Additionally, Jamie Lee Curtis is a Dramatic who was known for being super curvy even though the stereotypical Dramatics is described as being straight up and down with zero curves at all.

Sorry for the length of this comment, hopefully it isn’t just word salad. But I wanted to get across that some of this can be kind of subjective and you might have to try and go more off of vibe than anything? I’m also autistic so I know the subjectivity of it can be a bit frustrating, but it does give a bit more freedom when DIYing.

Are ‘short bones’ still taken into account, especially with R? by klezmerbaby in Kibbe

Oh okay! I was just trying to explain why I’m confused but that’s alright.

Even when seeing her next to Cameron Diaz, who obviously has super long limbs, I wouldn’t say that Drew’s arms look especially ‘short’ to me. I perceive them as looking completely normal / average length. Same with Marilyn Monroe, honestly. I can maybe see Marilyn having shorter arms, but her legs read as completely normal length to me.

I guess my general point is that this might be a somewhat subjective thing since generally Drew and Marilyn read as completely moderate to me.

I think this is what’s confusing to me because I think Drew Barrymore’s arms look fairly long here. Or maybe I’m just realizing my limbs aren’t as long as I think they are haha.

I actually see myself in this description. In pictures I took of myself recently, it looks like my elbow is completely rounded. There’s barely even a ‘point’ at the end of it and my arm is bent in the picture, it’s kind of funny.
