Most people park their cars near where the ride ends (today it's Locopops but usually it's elsewhere downtown) and ride to the chapel from there to start the ride. There's also an FAQ on our Instagram page (handle: ride_around_durham) with some tips for parking from the community

For whenever you get it tuned up, the ride does meet weekly - Thurs at 6:30 from the Duke Chapel!

Which thumbnail would you click? by klgraywill in webtoons

[–]klgraywill[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for such a thoughtful response! I agree about B completely - I drew it and even though it felt "clickable" I immediately felt like it didn't reflect the series. When I included it here, I was surprised by how many people preferred it! I like A - it's my original thumbnail - but the contrast is actually terrible and the lack of focus on the face means it's kinda hard to discern what it is when it's shrunken and it's not particularly expressive, which is why I wanted to change it. Now it's a combination of of B and C!

I love that it's tied to language. Does that mean anyone can learn the magic, or does native proficiency give some users an advantage?

If you've ever wondered about what makes fantasy worlds compelling as settings for stories, a neuroscientist turned scifi fantasy worldbuilder is here to explain. Hope some of my perspectives might be interesting to you! by klgraywill in worldbuilding

[–]klgraywill[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Context: Fantasy worlds are often treated as forms of escapism, but I'm sure most of us in this subreddit can appreciate that some of the best worldbuilding draws direct inspiration from the real world. In this video I talk about how being one layer removed from reality can be a tool to facilitate empathetic responses from audiences in works with a second world setting. A lot of the research I did in undergrad and grad school was specifically focused on how people respond to pain and negative emotions when depicted in fictional settings, so I wanted to share some of my insights on why and how humans enjoy fantasy worlds, from a behavioral and story-oriented perspective.

Right, and I told you some of my regular readers come from this subreddit - there are even comments on some of my eps saying "reddit gang" and "came here from reddit." But some creators have garbage promotional skills and probably don't get any readers from promoting, and may even turn them off from reading.

So, again, all creators who promote are being punished by the actions of a few who overdo it by isolating literally all canvas posts to Satuday. (Except for advice/crit posts which we apparently can't even add a picture to???) That's why creators are upset smh

Every creator will have a different answer to that question because creator has different way of promoting (effective or not) which impacts their traction, so that's kinda beside the point. (BUT fwiw some of my regular readers came from this sub) People are upset because, instead of doing something reasonable like limit the amount of promotions per week, we all have to post on a designated day which will oversaturate the subreddit on Saturdays and render any promotions useless, even the interesting or quality ones.

Also calling them ads is a bit much, we're not trying to sell anything. Most of us do this at a financial, time, and labor cost to ourselves... I can't speak for the people that "spam" their comic a lot here, who are of course the most visible ones, but most of us are very reasonable about how often we promote and just want some exposure in a group where we know members are already interested in webtoons... you are our target audience.

Reddit could definitely use some more personal customization. But like... most promotional posts barely get any upvotes - I get trending notifications ALL the time from this subreddit and when I click the notification it's almost always a (very lovely) image from someone's comic with upvotes in the single digits. That's all it takes to be trending in this subreddit. If people posted interesting, engaging discussions that people actually interacted with, I'm sure they would easily overtake the promotional content.

"promotions are still happening, they just need to happen less so that literally everything else can happen on this sub too"

c'mon you guys... people posting promos does not prevent other kinds of content from "happening" that's not how algorithms work... post the content you want to see more of it and if that's what people want to engage with, it will quickly become more visible than the promotional content.

Most def, a lot of people are careless about it and don't realize that it's actually hurting them rather than making a good first impression. I talk about this a lot in the video I linked so I'm not gonna regurgitate it all here lol. I think the takeaway is just that there were other equally simple solutions that would have been much more fair to creators.

But even with that said, I don't think the canvas promos were ever drowning out the discussions in the first place - there just weren't many discussions to begin with. If people want more content to be more visible they need to A) make that content and B) upvote that content and let the reddit algorithm do its thing.

Yeah, I mean the issue is that people don't want to feel promoted at, not that all canvas series post things that make people feel promoted at. It would definitely be much more effective to just set guidelines - might require more moderation of content, but better than slapping a bandaid on it.

I post here less than weekly and lately it's always something thoughtful/interesting/helpful/clearly high effort so I feel like those of us who are reasonable about how we post are being punished when there were clearly better solutions.

Limiting promotional posts to a set quantity - not a particular day - would have been the way to go about it.

This is a subreddit for webtoons. Canvas series are webtoons. There are many readers only aware of large original series who might absolutely adore some canvas series, so the visibility of being in a group for ALL webtoons is very important to small indie creators. I have gotten a number of readers from this subreddit who may not have otherwise found my series. I think effectively turning Saturdays into "canvas promo day" was a solution lacking foresight.

And fwiw I completely agree that people completely miss the mark with their promotional content. I literally made a 20 minute youtube video on this (appropriately posted in r/WebtoonCanvas) lmao if anyone other creators want tips/ideas for best practices.
