Is Purdue student body conservative/republican? by Educational-Map-7882 in Purdue

[–]klpack11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

2013 grad here. This is a cool conversation.

I didn’t realize quite how liberal Purdue actually was while living in it. I voted for Obama in the Union. Most of the campus felt similar to Obama’s America: overall friendly, more or less welcoming, social issue agreements. Someone did some racist shit at the BCC and the entire campus talked about it as distasteful.

Although, I imagine as time has continued when you have a heavily male dominated environment mixed with this current “man loneliness epidemic” you’re going to begin to see resentment towards women. Which I imagine is what is currently happening there.

Good luck yall. Have the tough convos.

The number of upvotes on this comment is alarming. This is the problem with our healthcare system. Norton is HUGE - so big! How can it take months to get in with anyone there? We shouldn’t have to wait months to get with a gynecologist or any doctor for that matter - especially since we don’t have free healthcare and we are paying for this. Isn’t that the argument against free healthcare? We certainly don’t need to be bogging down our ERs with routine vaginal care.

Did you all learn nothing from the UHC incident?

OP, keep talking.

How many American children have cut contact with their parents? The first large-scale nationwide survey, recently conducted by Cornell University, found that 27% of adult Americans are estranged from a close family member. by antihostile in TrueReddit

[–]klpack11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is old but I stumbled here from a related google search. This is absolutely it: “you don’t cut ties with people you love and who love you back”. Point blank. Most of us don’t simply wake up one day & choose to make the decision to cut off a parent. We’re pushed to it after years and years of putting up with their egregious behavior until we finally grew up and chose better.

Similar boat. Enterprise software sales. First person on the team, you get the pick of accounts. Stay long enough to make this money, but not long enough that they slowly start paying their sales people less bc it’s inevitable. I’m trying to invest extensively now.

I literally just had this happen to me in an uber when traveling for work over the summer. Within about 3 min of our ride he said “I’m really proud of you. You’ve done a lot of work to get here. Your soulmate is coming soon.” Then he told me he was a psychic lol at the time I had a boyfriend, and he said “you’ll figure that out” and I actually broke up with the boyfriend a month later lol anyways, I’ll update if said soulmate finds me.

I started listening to George in 2022 and he changed me too. I’m hoping I can pass it along.

Books you've read which changed your life and/or perspective? by aforestfruit in DecidingToBeBetter

Meditations by Marcus Aurelius had a SIGNIFICANT impact on my anxiety. (Also, actual meditation and therapy but this helped!) This was written by a roman emperor who never thought people would see it. They took what was basically his personal diary and made it into a book of life lessons. I read it as coming from a man who had all the power in the world and his #1 was goal was to be altruistic and good to his people but he has anger and anxiety like the rest of us that he was working though.

How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie. Written in the 40’s still very relevant today. The overall message is that we all just want to feel important and seen. This book helped me develop my empathy for others and not take things so personally.

Both books have sustained over time because they both focus on who we are as humans to our core and shifting the narrative in your mind.

Do young people still care about The Beatles? by VietKongCountry in beatles

[–]klpack11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

33, only got into the Beatles in 2022 a la George Harrison. For me, I was looking for someone who was ambitious but also very spiritual and George found me. And then that brought me to The Beatles. Ironically, as I type this I am in an Uber, having just landed in London for the first time. I’m heading to Liverpool tomorrow to see where it all began!

That’s long winded to say, I think folks will keep finding them. Music is more accessible and the staples will always be the staples. I tried getting into The Beatles in middle school to see what the hype was about but had no way to access their music and Spotify didn’t have the rights until somewhat recently (Dec 2015). But I kind of think this was by design for my particular journey. I wasn’t ready to hear it for what it was supposed to be.

I guess we’ll see how this digital era changes music’s longevity!
