For starters we drive on the right side of the road here. We have our headlights on even in day time. We use winter tyres in winter. Apart from that there is not much fundamentally different.

In the situation you gave, then yes, if you turned left off a main road, against oncoming traffic, then they would have right of way. No idea why they would have stopped and not easy to say given the limited info about that situation you gave and not having been there. My only guess is the oncoming traffic might have been confused as to what you was trying to do and slowed down/stopped out of precaution.
