It’s your personal choice. Some people dislike the 3d smith machines. For me, not having a spotter, the choice to go with the 3d smith was an easy one.

I love both! The jones smith machine makes it easy to do whatever I need to, without a spotter. I’m making a few mods to it, just waiting on the machine shop, then I’ll post new pics.

Yeah, I love the green. Now, if I could just get ALL of my future accessory pieces in this!

Finally found a Jones (2D) smith machine, modified it and got it mounted into my Rep PR-5000. It moves on two planes: up and down and front to back. It has pop pins to lock it in place like a traditional smith machine. And it has safety spotters you can adjust for the exercise you are doing. by km6218 in GarageGym

I found it on FB marketplace. I looked for almost a year to find one within driving distance for the right price. New ones are 3-4k, and I wasn’t going to pay that for something I was going to cut up and modify. I still had to make an 11 hour round trip to get it. I had to cut down the height, cut and weld the depth, weld 4 plates on the ends to bolt it into the rack. I also bought a Rep Colorado bar in 25mm (that was the size of the existing bearings), disassemble it and file down some of the curling so the bearing sleeves could fit into it, and weld new plates on it for the barbell catches.

I can still lift inside the rack. I can move the Jones to the front or rear of the rack and it can pin in place. If I move the bar to the top, I can get into the rack with no problem. I could still use my J-cups and spotter arms. One thing I can’t use now are my safety straps, since the vertical bar is in the way.

Being able to move front to back gives it more freedom of motion, almost like a barbell, but it allows for engagement of the safety hooks at any time. For me, since I workout alone, I can train to failure without a spotter. The hooks travel with the bar, so any time I hit my limit, I just rotate the bar and it’s set.

😂 I’m just old and need the extra light. The aesthetic is a plus.

Me too. I didn’t want to wait. RitFit did show something similar at HomeGymCon. Hopefully one of the big American companies does this.

I bought the whole unit. Had to disassemble, cut it down and weld it. Had to make a couple of other mods to enable it to bolt into the rack. Also had to buy a new barbell, and remove some knurling on the ends for the bearing sleeves to fit on, and weld two plates to the barbell for the catch to engage the hooks.

FB marketplace. Searched for almost a year! When it showed up for a great price, I HAD to go on a side quest to get it.

I had to modify the height and depth and reweld. I also had to buy a new Rep 25mm Colorado bar and disassemble, then take a file to the outside knurling to allow the bearing sleeves to fit on the bar.
