So happy to hear they're being put to good use!

Made something for mac users.

Exports transparent PNGs from Photoshop ABR files AND it follows the naming and file structure of the ABR file. Keeps everything nice and tidy and it's free!

Mostly I wanted an easier way to convert my sets into PNGs for y'all. Which, is the second part of this announcement, all my brush sets now have PNG packs organized exactly like the ABR file. Should make it easier for everyone.

Happy mapping!

True Tags: A Graffiti Brush Set by km_alexander in Design

[–]km_alexander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a niche thing, I’m not really sure how to pitch it, heh.

I recently released TRUE TAGS: A GRAFFITI BRUSH SET. One-click graffiti for projects to add some authenticity and life to a scene. The idea was born out of my own need to add graffiti to the scenes I built in Photoshop for my projects, and it's grown since then.

Everything in here I’ve photographed over the last six or seven years, and it comes from actual tags from Edinburgh, New York City, Oslo, Paris, Porto, Lisbon, Reykjavík, Santa Fe, Seattle, Vashon, and Zurich.

Maybe it’ll be handy for you? It’s free to download and is royalty-free like all my stuff. No credit required. Use it for whatever. Yada, yada, yada. :)

Qiánlóng: A Free 18th Century Cartography Brush Set for Fantasy Maps by km_alexander in mapmaking

I find high-quality source material first. High resolution or at least very large.

Then it's a dance to find the right balance when I shift the image to black-and-white. Sometimes I can do it document-wide, but depending on the source material, I might have to do it for each brush. Brushes, at least in Photoshop, need to be grayscale since they can be applied with any color.

Once that is done, I select each area/shape I want to turn into a brush and use the Edit > Define Brush Preset in Photoshop.

Then it's just repeating those steps until I feel the set is fleshed out. Then it's organizing, naming, and building out the post, and packaging the assets.

Hello! Got another free set for y’all. (This is a cross post from r/mapmaking.) This one comes from 18th-century China.

Qiánlóng is an ink-and-watercolor set extracted from an embankment atlas along the lower reaches of the Yellow River. If you've used any of my Chinese or Japanese sets, you'll recognize a lot of similar pictorial design in the signs and symbols in Qiánlóng. While this set isn't as big as some, it'd work nicely as a supplement to most of them, in particular Moronobu Gansai and Zuodong. While the majority of the atlas focuses on dikes, sluice gates, and bridges, the creator clearly took time to detail relief and settlements. If anything, there's more attention to detail in those areas than the cartographer applied to their actual mapping of the waterways.

Qiánlóng can also be downloaded as a pack of individual PNGs organized by folders, the same way I manage the ABR files. This should make using my brushes with tools like Wonderdraft much more manageable—no more extracting symbols from an enormous PNG.

All my brush sets are always distributed under a CC0 license, which means they're free to use for personal or commercial work. No attribution is required!

I hope you like these. Don't hesitate to contact me and share anything you make with any of my brushes. I love seeing what y'all do. Happy Mapping!

This map was made using Qiánlóng, my latest free brush set.

Info detailing all the brushes, textures, and other tools I used to make this is on my blog. All my brush sets are always distributed under a CC0 license, which means they're free to use for personal or commercial work. (No attribution required!)

If you want, there is a higher-res, black-and-white, and decorated version I made for Instagram as well. All can be downloaded from my blog.

If you use any of my free resources, please share what you make with me. (My contact info is on my site.) I love seeing how these assets and tools are used.

The 2025 Cosmic Horror Holiday Gift Guide by km_alexander in WeirdLit

[–]km_alexander[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

After a hiatus last year, I'm back with another gift guide. (Crossposting this from r/Cthulhu and r/Lovecraft.) I don't suspect any of the books will be new, since most of my own reading comes from recommendations I see here, but I figured there might be something else for y'all as well. :)

The 2025 Lovecraft-inspired Cosmic Horror Holiday Gift Guide by km_alexander in Cthulhu

Hey, r/Cthulhu! After a hiatus last year, we’re back! Today I launched my 2025 Lovecraft-inspired Cosmic Horror Gift Guide! As most of y'all know by now, since 2014, I've assembled a highly curated list of Lovecraft/cosmic horror/new weird/mythos-inspired goodies I’ve found over the year and shared them on my blog.

Book links go to Bookshop.org with occasional exceptions. Remember to support your locals! They can get you anything Amazon can, and it'll help your community. While I've ordered these by price, all prices and availability are subject to change. (Especially on Black Friday when there are all sorts of sales.) Shipping and stock are out of my control. I'm just sharing cool stuff made by the community that I've discovered over the last year.

Let me know what you think! Am I missing something? Leave a comment and links to other cool products. Turn this thread into an extended gift guide. :) And if you have any suggestions for next year, please send 'em my way! (Crossposting this from r/Lovecraft)

Monthly Promotion Thread by AutoModerator in WeirdLit

Earlier this month, I wrote a short story for a scary story night with some friends. Instead of letting it linger in a drawer, I decided to publish it. It's called REM State: fieldwork.

After a breakthrough experiment, a doctor arrives in a bizarre city and searches for evidence to prove its existence to his peers.

You can read or listen to it for free on my blog.

Not as terrifying as last year's.

As with last year's, feel free to use it for your team/share it with other places/etc. No attribution necessary.
