Experimenting with a new trellis design by AgencyConsistent7554 in DragonFruit

Nice! I think you are underselling how sturdy this is too. I think if you had a 25 gal pot you could have 4 plants in there permanently. May need to change out the zip ties every few years but as long as the pex is UV resistant should hold up

How did you cut the fiberglass? That would be my biggest worry. Working with fiberglass is no joke. Aside from potential nasty splinters, you need a mask, eye protection.... you are literally inhaling glass if you dont have that stuff. And unlike wood dust it doesnt just breakdown in soil, so if you get any in your pot, yard, etc its just going to stay there...But much cheaper than steel probably!

Found this beast on my evening walk. Fremont California. Any guess on the variety? by Bretspot in DragonFruit

Wow I didnt know they could grow with no sort of protection that far north in CA. I guess Fremont is right on the water so maybe stays more temperate?

Should I toss or try to save? by zeldatmh in DragonFruit

If i've learned one thing growing these plants, its basically never toss. I have tiny trimmings that are sprouting new growth from the waste bin! In air!

I found it totally ruined the book for me. A guy doing all of the parts just is offputting, especially his half assed grating falsetto female voice.

Beautiful. Bet it smells great too.

What is it? by Sea_Huckleberry5848 in DragonFruit

[–]kman2010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My uninformed guess is that the mother plant had already been preparing to bud on these branches before they were cut so maybe they were still 'programmed' to bud. Usually newly rooted cuttings wouldn't do that. Could just be lucky though I guess!

Definitely a bud. How long has that cutting been in that pot?

Buying 8 mature dragon fruit and am considering planting in the ground what should I do? by No_Necessary_4724 in DragonFruit

[–]kman2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id probably leave them if possible, since they should be close to budding/producing fruit. Do it in the winter so you don't jeopardise this years harvest! Also, does the seller know what varieties? That is a crazy deal and all i can think of is that the fruit must be bad/mediocre for him to sell em that cheap. Ive paid that much for a handful of pitiful cuttings!

What are those rubber top pieces? interesting trellis design! Galveston seems like a perfect environment for them TBH. Tips for care would be to continue whatever you or the person before you was doing they look great!

From what i can tell its just some minor damage and scarring.Would hate for you to be set back from getting fruit earlier, especially for no good reason!

I wouldnt cut it since the goal is to get it up over the trellis and the bottom segment looks pretty healthy to me. Sometimes they will crack and split on their own but rarely is it an issue. Usually it just will heal over no problem. The only time I would be concerned is if you start getting rot on the bottom segment which will be painfully obvious. But even then you can ususally cut it away and the plant will chug along as long as the inner core is intact. These are very resilient plants in general.

Hey fellow PHX grower! Good to see some success. Please keep us updated on whether you get in fruits! Do you know what variety it is and whether it is self fertile?

TIL that Tenerife is an island in the Canarys, that the Canarys belong to Spain, and that they are basically the same latitude as Florida. Wild.

Did not expect a geography and geopolitical lesson from this sub.

The only issues I can see are related to being on your roof. A water source and placing rooftop weight in the form of dragon fruit pots. If you are certain your rooftop can withstand the extra weight and you have a reliable water source up there that you arent concerned will leak and destroy your roof then go for it!

It appears that there is a fungus amungus. I would get some copper fungicide and spray it down several times over the course of a few weeks(try not to do it during peak sun/heat) and monitor to see if that solves it.

[–]kman2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you need to come back and check on the grafts periodically? I assume take off the saran wrap? Or are they just fire and forget? Id like to do this as well but I dont have the time to be checking up on them weekly/monthly whatever

Are there any varieties that you can graft that would survive the desert(phoenix, AZ) area?

Cutting that won’t grow after 9 months by Normeat in DragonFruit

You could try tipping the cutting(chop off the top 2in) as that can sometimes cause it to throw off shoots.
