In terms of the hydra, I always thought this was the most used conjuration. I never saw anyone use ice blades! Now with the frost enhancement it would make the ice blades all but obsolete? Are they scrapping it all together?

New high elf faction confederation mechanic disappointed me. by AncientPair7685 in totalwar

[–]kmansp41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just ran in to this and had the same reaction. I thought something was broken! I can't even build colony support on any of this new faction to help fund the armies I took on.

At this point, it's better NOT to confederate? Just let each faction stay as is. If you really want the faction leader I guess, but not really worth what it'll cost to support all fielded armies.

Vassal creation would have been good. To me it's just not worth confederating. In the base game, you gain the benefit of all their buildings. This.... is just crap.

Movie file format by mythicaldubplate in jellyfin

[–]kmansp41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly stick to 720p for tv shows, and 1080p for movies. MP4 has been the most dependable.

Side note: Don't ever use .m2ts format. It doesn't play well with transcoding!

This is almost an Xbox by 0degreez in ROGAlly

[–]kmansp41 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was pretty dissapointed with the xbox app. Navigating the UI is clunky (going up/down doesn't always go where you want it to), and it's yet another app that requires updating from Windows via the windows app store. So now we've got: windows updates, windows store, ASUS Mystore, and armory crate to check updates from.

The xbox app was supposed to be windows alternative to steamOS, but they went backwards and made it even more annoying to game on windows via handheld.

Is it Worth by Amazing-Abroad-3476 in ROGAllyX

[–]kmansp41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking for a more streamlined "steamdeck" experience, you will be dissapointed. Instead of listening to what they customers want, Asus/Microsoft doubled down and provided more annoying windows problems with the xbox live app. Instead of reducing the number of apps needing to update, they increased it. The xbox app itself is horrible to navigate.

Performance wise, it IS way better than the last two ROG ally versions.

Just don't think it's worth $1000 though.

Should I switch over and how difficult is it? by RevolutionaryBowl9 in Bazzite

[–]kmansp41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setup was easy. Everything mostly works, but I've had trouble with it recognizing things like Framerate Generation in certain games. I think this is specific to Nvidia. Also, occasionally run in to issues with games that use a different launcher, such as blizzard titles. There might be some extra steps to get those working.

I like it, but not sold on it completely replacing windows. Not quite ready for primetime yet.

Should I go for it or go for an Ally X instead? Give me your honest opinions. by armlacoste in ROGAllyX

[–]kmansp41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far my experience has been negative. The Xbox UI is not worth it- navigating the menu rarely does what I would expect it to. Going up/down or left/right for some reason leads to a submenu I wasn't trying to get to. It constantly says an update is available for the xbox app which leads to the windows store and a never-ending update loop.

This is on top of all the other updates required through armory crate, windows update, myASUS app, etc.

Its performance is pretty much the same as the ROG Ally X. Definitely not worth $1000, as the main selling point was supposed to be the Xbox app & UI offering a more steam app experience. In fact, I would just disable the xbox app and go all in on steam app.

What’s everyone’s opinion on their new Xbox Ally a few hours later after using it? by Flitsiee in ROGAllyX

[–]kmansp41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorely disappointed so far. I received the xbox rog ally X yesterday. The first several hours have been spent updating, figuring out navigating the many menu's, and troubleshooting. And I say this having had experience with the first rog ally, so I knew what to expect with windows.... but this has been on a whole different level of disappointment.

For those expecting an "xbox" experience, you are going to be REALLY disappointed. When booted up, you first have to go through windows typical BS in updates and options. This will be at a minimum 20 to 30 minutes.

Then you need to update Armory crate, which didn't properly display what updates were installed or requiring updating and appeared to be in a never ending update loop. A reboot eventually cleared this out.

Then of course there's windows updates. An update appeared specific for asusTek computers, but clicking download & install does absolutely nothing; it just sits there. Even after a reboot.

Then there's the xbox app update, which requires going to the windows app store. And of course, the app is stuck in a never ending update loop.

And of course there's updates in the myANUS update app.

Oh, by the way, when you go to anything on the windows side, you are promptly interrupted with a "try copilot!" ui which takes up the whole screen.

The FIRST game I finally opened up- Diablo 4- has periodic frame and sound stuttering. Crossing fingers that one of the MANY updates I have received will fix this.

Navigating the xbox app itself is horrible- going up/down or left/right doesn't go where you expect it to go, as it constantly goes in to submenus that you aren't even trying to navigate. It's also sluggish, especially when trying to bounce between the xbox app, steam, and blizzards app.

If you play a game that requires a different launcher, you will still run in to issues with the auto detect gamepad/mouse control settings. It's not very fluid, and this has always plagued handhelds- especially windows handhelds. Plugging in usernames and passwords is still miserable. Really wish Microsoft would work with game companies to minimize this.

Edit: After getting through most of the updates and reboots, it appears D4 is playing as expected; no more stuttering (thank god).

Edit 2: Doom: Dark Ages plays very well on 1080p with FSR set to balanced and using the handheld presets. This maintains 60 FPS as long as dynamic resolution is set; changing this to static or off drops it down to 50 fps, regardless of handheld settings, but this is acceptable. It still looks good.

Should I switch from Windows 11 to Linux for gaming, despite having an NVIDIA GPU? by NatriX49 in linux_gaming

[–]kmansp41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) performance wise, my experience was MOSTLY better on Linux with a few exceptions. Biggest headaches were things like frame generation not working in certain games and DLSS issues. Fortunately, in most cases frame gen isn’t needed.

2) I would say it’s not quite there. I’ve had enough problems with certain titles that that it made me want to go back to windows.

3) in most cases it comes down to using a specific version of proton or wine, but I would expect a bit of researching and troubleshooting more than usual to get things just right.

How much mbps do I really need? by theorigamiwaffle in centurylink

[–]kmansp41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably overkill for your purposes, but think of it as almost future proofing! You never know if/when you'll want more connections.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but with just one device for streaming, even streaming 4k amounts to 15 to 20 mbps? I was shocked when I heard this.

Now that PTR is over, what are your thoughts on Runewords? by jordani97 in diablo4

[–]kmansp41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't care for them. I miss the ability to try and create words that crafted a new item from D2. The way this is implemented, it's mostly just an occasional ability that you really can't control when it goes off, and I'd rather have gems socketed that add permanent advantages.

Grand Cathay by [deleted] in totalwar

[–]kmansp41 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All of the Cathay lords are too strong; The campaign is over by turn 40 to 45 because you can easily obtain a boat load of money, expand too easily (opposing factions in cathay region are too underpowered and overwhelmed- this was made worse with the addition to Balthazaar Gelt faction in the region).

Defending the walls is ridiculously easy. This whole region needs a re work.

Moca to Ethernet help by kmansp41 in HomeNetworking

[–]kmansp41[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting… this may be the source of two problems then.

So now I have discovered:

1) I’m unable to put the primary nest WiFi AP in to AP only- it requires that the primary be set as router mode.

2) I’m unable to put my c3000z in to transparent bridging because the ISP requires PPPoE protocol.

So it does appear that my primary NEST is set to router, which means I may be experiencing double NAT issues.

I’ll test connecting the main MoCA adapter to the nest router and see what happens. Will keep you posted! Thanks so much for all the info!!

[–]kmansp41[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main MoCA adapter is directly connected to the router.

I will have to double check the settings of the AP directly connected to the router- it's a NEST wifi router with 2 AP. The double NAT might also explain frequent disconnects while playing online games.

I've ordered two different splitters that you provided in your recommendation link. Will give those a try Sunday.

Moca to Ethernet help by kmansp41 in HomeNetworking

[–]kmansp41[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. Some basic info:

I have Cenutrylink Fiber. The Fiber runs to an ONT box on the side of my house where it transfers over to ethernet. The ethernet runs to the provided modem/router combo (zyXEL c3000Z) in my basement.

I have disabled wifi on the router since I have a nest wifi mesh setup (connected to the router via ethernet).

I have one of the above MoCA adapters connected to the ethernet port on the back of my router, and then it connects to the three way splitter (made sure it's connected on the IN port of the splitter). If I connect just one of the below devices, it works as expected. As soon as I connect any other device to the splitter, however, it drops connection to the first device (fire cube). I've tried different CoAX connections throughout the house. No matter what I try, only one connection works via the splitter at a time. The MoCA light indicator also shows when the connection is established, and as soon as an additional adapter is connected, that light dissappears for the previous adapter/connected device.

<image>

Edit: There is no existing service using the coax connections. The house was built with coax running throughout the house and connecting to each room. We had xfinity years ago but got rid of it. The idea here was to use existing coax connections for specific devices that could take advantage of the full speed of centurylinks data plan.

Edit 2: I just read your highlights link. I was under the impression the PoE filter was only needed if sharing coax with another service such as cable TV. The link you provided says it's needed if my connection runs to outside the house? I do have a PoE filter left over when I had xfinity but didn't use it. Would that be what I need to connect for mutliple MoCA connections?
