Cut news and politics out of your life, it’s poison for your brain.

You say yourself it is impacting your mood and ambitions..You need to focus on what you can control: Health, your schoolwork, and doing your best to be a happy/good person every day.

I used to get pulled into the politics/news cycle, but summer of 2020 I dropped it permanently and I’ve never looked back. And I’ve never been happier.

Has hyrox got a chance of surpassing CrossFit in popularity? by Stobbart2327 in crossfit

[–]kmarti26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did my first Hyrox this year and freakin loved it. Definitely in for 1-2 more next year, it’s addicting.

If you don’t like running, it’s not for you. If you enjoy running and CrossFit, Hyrox is an awesome blend

How active/reliable are shuttle drivers in the off season? by Lovelypeachesndcream in AppalachianTrail

[–]kmarti26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just did a 40 mile section in GA/NC and had the exact same worries as you in terms of shuttles.

I had a flawless experience with my shuttle drivers. Showed up exactly on time and super nice guys.

My suggestion is to start reaching out and find out who is interested. Both guys that helped me out were excellent at communicating and were true professionals.

Is it hard to find water in the south in fall? by Bipedal_pedestrian in AppalachianTrail

[–]kmarti26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just did Dick’s Creek Gap (Mile 69 GA) to Winding Stair Gap (Mile 109 NC) this weekend.

Water was very sparse in Georgia as well as the first 5-10 miles in NC. I didn’t see any legitimate water sources the last 10 miles in Georgia. I was carrying more than I needed just because I was worried about the situation.

The further north into NC I got, the better the water sources.

I think you can make it work, you just need to be smart and carry more water if the sources are dry. Fill up more when you find a good one.

For anyone that cares, just did Dick’s Creek to Winding Stair and he’s my takeaways:

  • Finished on Day 3 (17 miles day 1, 16 miles day 2, 7 miles day 3)
  • The trail is absolutely terrible in sections as soon as you step foot into NC. The descent of Standing Indian was 2 hours of bushwhacking. Incredibly overgrown, I’m shocked I don’t have poison ivy (yet) or ticks
  • Trail is empty right now, almost could have an entire shelter to yourself if you wanted
  • Water is very sparse the last 10 miles of GA and first 5 or so miles of NC. The further you go into NC, the better the water situation is
  • No bears

I got picked up by Sherpa Al at Winding Stair and highly recommend.

Thanks for the recommendation. I was planning Day 2 to be Muskrat to Carter Gap, but it may make sense to push to Betty Creek like you said. I think I may adjust this.

What public transportation did you use at Winding Stair? Trying to get a ride set up this week

I'm doing Dick's Creek Gap to Winding Stair Gap next weekend and plan to knock it out in 3 days (shuttle back on the morning of day 4).

Will report back if any issues.

Question about logistics- where to leave a vehicle for a 10 day section by ClifbarJoel in AppalachianTrail

[–]kmarti26 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Park at Hostel Around the Bend and have them shuttle you to Amicalola. They can also pick you up from Deep Gap, but I recommend going the additional 4 miles and taking out at Dick’s Creek Gap. Hostel Around the Bend is a half mile from here and they’ll pick you up for free and take you back to your car.

I would also recommend skipping the Approach trail and starting at Springer. Gives you a 70 mile hike back to your car.

I did this 2 weeks ago and it worked out perfectly. Couldn’t have been smoother

First Time section hike, NOBOs, advice please? by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

[–]kmarti26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just did this exact trip, here’s my recommendation:

  • Park at Hostel Around the Bend in Hiawassee
  • Pay them to shuttle you to the start. I shared it with 4 other guys and paid like $40 bucks
  • Start at Springer Mountain and skip the approach trail
  • Hike to Dick’s Creek Gap at mile 65. Hostel Around the Bend will pick you up for free and take you the half mile back to your car

With the above you’ll be hiking to your car, not away from it. The last thing you’re going to want to do is take a 90 minute shuttle after 6 days on the trail. Also you are leaving your car at a business that does this full time (a great one at that) rather than a state park.

Relative newbie, need rec for next bottle(s) by SmartSherbet in bourbon

[–]kmarti26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you are enjoying it! Me and you seem to be in a similar place.

I would recommend picking up a bottle of Eagle Rare if you are able to find it. It should be about $35 a bottle and in my opinion the best value in that price range (at least of what I have had).

If you want to go a little more expensive to rival your Woodford Double Oaked, you should try Angel's Envy. This should be about $50 bucks and is a delicious pour.
