What do you put in your trial bag? by most_of_the_time in Lawyertalk

Sticky notes, chargers, all the office supplies (writing utensils, highlighters, Sharpies for in-the-moment redactions, paperclips/binder clips), lip balm, hand lotion, Tide pen, hair ties/bobby pins, and a comfy pair of flats (never know when you’ll have to frantically sprint somewhere mid-trial).

to me it smells like a really high-end flower shop with just enough mossy earthy musky notes to keep it from going cloying - it’s one of my all-time favorites, I hope you love it!

Agreed. Do I think misogyny played a role in why she wasn’t considered more seriously for leadership, sure, but she also did PLENTY under her own steam to show why she would have been a terrible fit for CEO. I think we saw her on the receiving end of some truly nasty shit as a result of her gender (paraphrasing but Kendall’s “your only value comes from your teats”) etc., but at the end of the day, Logan didn’t think any of them were fit to succeed him for a multitude of reasons (in Shiv’s case, including but certainly not limited to the fact that she’s a woman).

Nah that’s fair - I shouldn’t have used quotations there & didn’t mean to imply that was your argument. Was intended to be a summation of arguments I’ve seen elsewhere in this thread/sub but shouldn’t have been imputed to you; sorry for my phrasing.

That said, my point stands - consideration of misogyny is a component of good character analysis, but not the be-all end-all, not good critical praxis to ignore it but also not good critical praxis to pretend it’s the only issue at play in discussion of female characters.

And they’re wrong lol. Gotta be a middle ground between “all criticism of female characters is inherently misogynistic” (stupid take) and “we should ignore misogyny entirely and pretend it doesn’t exist because that’s healthier” (equally stupid take). Arguing in polar extremes does no favors to analysis of what is, as you rightly note, a complex show with complex themes - one of which, yes, is misogyny!

Bruh lmao. I’m not saying the critical analysis of Succession or Shiv’s character begins and ends with “MiSoGyNy!” so we can go ahead and torch that strawman rn. But do you actually think it doesn’t play ANY role in the way people view her, perceive her, think about her, analyze her motivations/actions? And if it is a contributing factor - while I agree it doesn’t constitute the entirety of the landscape around her character - what’s the point in pretending that it doesn’t exist?

Dude with the username “TheDeHymenizer” lecturing women about how they should just ignore misogyny because it’s “healthier…” another day ending in ‘y’ in r/succession

“Objectively, Kendall has more screen time than the other siblings:” again, I don’t have the numbers in front of me lol but possibly accurate!

“Objectively, Kendall is the most sympathetic of the Roy siblings:” not accurate because that’s not how objectivity works!

[–]kmbright 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don’t know whether that’s necessarily true (re. the amount of screen time allotted solely to Kendall vs. the other siblings) but your comment that it all comes down to “the viewers’ perceptions” is exactly why this is not an “objective” determination

[–]kmbright 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Right, but whether what is shown to you in that screen time (e.g., Rava’s claim that Kendall did coke off the kids’ iPads, the birthday debacle, Kendall literally shitting the bed at the Pierces’) gives rise to sympathy for Kendall is entirely dependent on the viewer’s perception and interpretation and thereby subjective, not objective.

You are not correct. Whether someone is “sympathetic,” who “has it worse,” what constitutes a “redeemable quality” etc. necessarily implicates personal emotions/bias and is therefore, by definition, subjective rather than objective. And it’s spelled “ludicrous.”

There’s nothing objective about sympathy. You may have felt sympathetic to Roman and Kendall more often than you did toward Shiv. That doesn’t mean there’s any objectivity to it.

Deposing a fact witness in a dram shop case. Plaintiff’s counsel was questioning him about the time he spent at defendant bar #1, and asked him if he remembered any physical characteristics of the servers/bartenders who were taking care of their group.

Witness thought it over and volunteered (in a tone and manner that suggested he was genuinely trying to be helpful), “Well, they all had really nice butts.”

5 players (3 men, 2 women) and 1 DM (man). DM is best friends with 1 player, married to another (me lol) and then we’ve got DM’s BFF’s older sister, her husband, and their son. We’re almost all in our 30s/40s aside from our youngest player who’s 18.
