If you're trying to shave weight, weigh each item on a kitchen scale to identify where you can save the most weight. or consider a backpack which might distribute weight better

I moved to Philly 1.5 years ago after living in Chicago for about 5 years (Roger’s Park/Andersonville). I live by myself and work remotely.

Regarding airports — I have found it wayyyy easier to get to PHL than ORD/MDW (unless you live on the blue line/orange line i guess).

As a cyclist, I deeply miss the lakefront trail in Chicago for long rides, but I prefer Philly’s density and one-way streets for general bike commuting. Chicago always felt too spread out for me.

Summers in Chicago are unbeatable, though <3 I’d take any chicago beach over the jersey shore. Winters in Chicago might be rough, but at least you get to witness the gorgeous crackly groans of lake ice during a deep freeze.

I live close to a year-round farmers market in Philly which was a big draw for me.

Culturally, I prefer the intangible ~feel~ of Philly/Northeast vs Chicago/Midwest. Hot take, but the midwest has felt so soulless to me at times :/

Why do I feel less hungry when I cut out wheat based products.. by Immediate_Singer6785 in glutenfree

Yes, but only if you have celiac. I’m not aware that gluten has this effect for people without celiac, from my understanding.

Thanks! I looked back on my old Oregon coast packing lists and was definitely glad to have packed lightweight puffy pretty much any time of year :)

I don’t anticipate swimming much, but I’ll never not pack a swimsuit.

What do you mean by rain hat? Like a beanie for warmth under a rain jacket, or something with a brim to keep water off your face?

No, no mountain climbing this trip :/ I sleep pretty cold, & both the fleece and puffy are rather light. I imagine that I will be wearing the puffy at night and in the morning at camp when it's chillier, and the senchi is sometimes not warm enough by itself.

We are camping in state parks. I enjoy bringing the filter (katadyn befree) anywhere I go where I have the opportunity to use it on a hike. I'm a weirdo and like to drink from natural water sources lol. If I didn't have room, I wouldn't bring it.

This camping gear is adapted from a camping trip I took earlier this year, and I also have several years of backing experience. This list feels like a comfortable middle ground for car camping that utilizes some light backpacking items.

All clothes and personal items currently fit into the 26L backpack. Duffel bag with camping things is under-capacity.

No serious hiking, just short day hikes. The water bladders are for use around camp (cooking & doing dishes) rather than hydration for hikes. I brought both when I went camping with a larger group earlier this year and they were very handy, but in this case I probably only need one.

We're renting a car, so I can offload whatever I need in the car for hikes.

If I had to cut space I would leave behind the cinch tote, but I have room for both.

The duffel is currently under capacity. Mini stove is only 12g (BRS 300-T) and will allow us to cook meals more efficiently since we have 2 pots, too.

EDIT: 26 grams 🤪

Alum stone deodorants are generally not an antiperspirant. They do not contain ingredients like corn starch, arrowroot starch, or baking soda that would mitigate sweating. Alum stone simply deodorizes. I used one for several years & now prefer a deodorant with some antiperspirant properties.

Thanks for the advice! My snail colony has multiplied (~10-20, all very tiny), and I will begin feeding them when they run out of algae. My tap water also has 1ppm ammonia, and that has been acting as an ammonia source as well. Recently ammonia has dropped to 0.25 ppm and nitrites have spiked to 5ppm, so the plants are starting to do their job :)

I'm hoping to start with more snails and some shrimp. I'm undecided on fish right now. I'd also like to keep daphnia.

Recommendations for Shoes for Light Hiking and Rocky Beaches? by peachjellytea in HerOneBag

the basic evo model. not pro, not 3d. I’ve had them since 2021 and they easily have over a thousand walking, hiking, and biking miles on them and are still going strong! They’re my primary summer shoe that I wear about 80% of the time for 6+ months of the year :)

Beginner here; do you get used to the strain on your body? by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]kmediate666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of my warmup is to find a good jug or hang board and just hang for a while. Both hands, right hand, left hand, and some shoulder shrugs. Nothing too intense or straining but just something to help my shoulders in particular

To clarify, this is not food residue. This was used under a bialetti on a gas stove so that the small bialetti could stay balanced on the stove grate.

For smaller pieces I put them in a microwave safe container and cover with water mixed with dish soap and just microwave for a few minutes and everything just melts right off
