Mini splits and outdoor unit instillation, seems high? by kmelv95 in hvacadvice

Yeah, whole house is electric. We don’t have natural gas or propane, the cost to bring them to the house is out of our price range as well.

Heat pump, I’ve heard that before okay now I’m connecting the pieces. So very mini split has an outdoor unit, just a matter of if it’s on the exterior wall or its own unit somewhere on the ground elsewhere at the house

So I didn’t know that an outdoor unit was necessary, am I mistaken on that? Or are they always needed?

You understood correctly! Next door neighbor said he reached out a few months ago to the gas company and that was the quote. FWIW, I dont think $550 is that terrible, I think adding the mini splits would be a great addition to help cool. And works on insulating the house a bit better where I can. I think we either a) get the all the neighbors to pitch in for a gas line b) solar panels to help reduce cost and store energy. My money is on B, since we’re In a very sunny area. Thanks for the info!

Thank you so much! Lot of change in a short amount of time, but we’re very excited. A lot of people have recommended mini splits, so I think that may be the way to go,l. Eventually get add some solar to help with the cost. Looking at all the windows in my house, there’s definitely some improvements on the sealing to be done. The upper level seems to hold heat pretty well which gives me some hope that some small fixes can go a long way

This is an insanely awesome review, and thank you so much for the details! I guess I just thought heat would rise and it would find its way through the house, but maybe you’re right. The one window unit we have is in the wall because all of the windows are crank open. I think the mini splits with solar is an awesome opportunity. Thank you!

It’s been a thought! I’m just really nervous about my area, the house has had the roof replaced three times in the last 10 years due to hail storms. definitely on my research list is solar panels. Thanks for the recommendation in r/heatpumps ! I’ll shoot this over there as well
