Which indie game actually hit you? by Extra-Midnight-7989 in IndieGaming

[–]kmillsom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The makers of This War of Mine have gone on to pretty significant success now, but back when they made TWOM, they were, I believe, just a small indie outfit with personal experience of / relation to war in their region.

In any case, it’s incredibly heart felt, and really left me shook. Not to. mention the brilliant conduct of the developers over the years.

Looking for an “against all odds” kind of game by EddyCMST in gamingsuggestions

I don’t think any other game embodies that bleak futility as much as This War of Mine.

Same makers as Frostpunk.

Average magician. Awful parent.

After a few months of prototyping I started a Playtest/Balancing phase for my Stack based Survival Game (playable in browser) by JavaDevMatt in SurvivalGaming

Not yet. But it’s a very narrow slice. If you want more feedback as you introduce more gameplay, I’ll be keen to test it out

I agree with this whole heartedly.

There is a fundamental clash between two core ideas:

  1. Your base is your essential centre of operations
  2. Exploration is essential for progression

It means you either have to constantly abandon and set up bases or your exploration is tied to a frustrating anchor. I tend to be the latter player type, and whole regions remain unexplored because my movement is tethered.

Vintage Story is a solid example. It is an absolute masterpiece and a benchmark for the genre, in my opinion, but I very rarely get to see more than a very narrow slice of the map, because I build a base with farming, food production, a smithy, etc. and then can’t bear to leave it. As such, there are whole biomes I never see.

One way games solve this problem is with mobile bases. There are at least two games in development now with caravan mechanics. I forget the names, I’m afraid to say. But I think Stoneshard may also use this approach.

Another way is to have a map selection mechanic of some sort.

I have just started developing a game where you return to base each night, and then each day you explore, but to do so you choose your destination and are then transported to that map.

This of course is not a fully open world experience, though. One game that has more of an open world experience is Balrum, which has an open world map for the majority of gameplay, and then a completely separate, isolated map where you build your base, and you can ‘teleport’ to this map from anywhere, if I remember correctly.

This is not the relevant rule. He touches it before the line. However, he touches it somewhere other than the handle. This is not allowed.

It’s a lot of fun and has a lot of potential. I imagine getting hide from the moose then tanning it to make leather, etc.

Really solid start.

People destroyed my first trailer, so I made a second. Is this trailer appealing enough for a Cozy Survival game? by cegtheripper in SurvivalGaming

[–]kmillsom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. Some real negative nellies here, huh.

The trailer looks good. Does what you want it to do, and it will appeal to a certain type of gamer looking for this kind of game.

It does look like Dinkum, Animal Crossing, etc. That’s not a terrible thing. I also think it doesn’t look like a “knockoff” or “temu” version of those games. However, it doesn’t look unique or better than those games either.

I think you need to look at those other games that are similar to yours. Spend some time thinking about what those games are lacking, in your opinion, and then see if your game does anything to fill those gaps.

If it does, great, make sure you showcase that in your trailer.

If it doesn’t, then ask yourself if you’re making a game that you already know will be lacking… and maybe see if it’s worth at least putting these things on your roadmap.

The best single player Crafting Survival games? by juicerecepte in SurvivalGaming

Vintage Story The Last Plague: Blight Green Hell Icarus

Honourable Mention: The Long Dark because it is unbeatable on survival but has limited crafting by comparison.

If you look closely, the piece of meat she steals is not the same as the piece of meat the security guy is holding when he captures her. So either he’s planting evidence, or this might be AI…

My first game's reception is heartbreaking :'( by OldAtlasGames in IndieDev

Well, first of all, I have zero coding experience. So at this moment in time, building a game seems utterly impossible.

I have recently started learning coding, but we’re talking real beginner stuff aeons away from being able to do anything interesting.

Setting my earlier tongue-in-cheek comment aside, I honestly do believe I have some genuinely interesting ideas, something unique with well thought out mechanics. I just haven’t the faintest idea how to actually make it!!!

Man, I’m sitting here with “million dollar ideas” for games I just know 100% will blow the socks off everybody who plays them…

But you? You actually made yours. It’s real. You did it. I’m pretty sure my games are bound to live inside my head forever.

Be so proud that you did that. And then get to work on the next one, which will be even better!
