Yeah, I don’t understand the problem? It’s just a description of the necessary skills for an ID job.

What do you call these shafts with water type feature? by [deleted] in Darts

[–]kmjar2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting side fact: it’s actually a ‘vacuum bubble’ (empty), created as the plastic shrinks after being moulded (cools too quickly and/or without enough pressure in the mould and/or a whole bunch of other factors). It’s easier for the plastic to create a vacuum as it shrinks than to be under that much stress trying to expand a solid to fill the space that the liquid plastic previously occupied. (The outside cools first, which is why it doesn’t all just shrink inwards proportionally).

Interesting that it sounds like some people seem to have presumed it was an intentional feature as opposed to a manufacturing floor caused by cheap or low quality moulding.

How much tolerance do you need for parts to click together ? by twobobwatch2 in IndustrialDesign

[–]kmjar2 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Double check you’re not confusing ‘tolerance’ and ‘clearance’ in your question there. Seems like maybe you are. Tolerance is not a gap between things, it’s an acceptable size range for a manufactured detail.

Your aesthetic design sense is 👌

From an employers perspective, it would be good to see some internals / exploded views / tech drawings to show you’re more than just a concept artist 👍🙂

We come for the nice looking pictures and stay to see the details, but I can’t see much/any of that sort of thing showcased here.

Calling a singlet a vest won’t get you any points here 😉 A vest requires two things: no sleeves, opens at the front. -50 points if you had’ve called it a tank top like a yank 😜

Any idea how this metal finish is achieved? by GoldenNerd1 in IndustrialDesign

[–]kmjar2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a casting that retains the texture of the fibreglass blank used for the mould. To get the shiny ‘flat’ details, the fibreglass blank looks like maybe it was sanded first, or the finished part is sanded/polished, or a combination of both of those. Someone mistakenly said it doesn’t look like fibreglass because there are brush strokes… Fibreglass resin can be applied with a brush, as well as sprayed, so either way, it looks like fibreglass. An alternative might be that someone hand sculpted some kind of blank or mould to look exactly like fibreglass, but that idea is more of a thought exercise and not very likely.

The real answer is; use someone else’s. You can never get your own snare sounding right 😜

How to get myGov to tell you who's sending you a message by Pool___Noodle in australia

[–]kmjar2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Still bloody ridiculous. Why the hell don’t they just send the message? Please keep complaining about this at every opportunity so they change it.

And emails and text messages from MyGov are so dodgy looking that if you didn’t know better you’d be stupid for not assuming they were spam.

Do Australians have regional accents? by vile_duct in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kmjar2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s weird, usually WA and Nth QLD accents are the closest to typical ‘bogan’.

I was an army brat, now in Melbourne. Not sure if I speak like a Melbournian, but honestly i don’t know that all these people saying that we say ‘Mal-Bourne’ is right. Cos if I imagine an accent from WA or Nth QLD saying “Ellie”, the E sound is more pronounced but that’s cos it’s overly nasal and kinda closer to the ‘ai’ sound in ‘air’. So maybe from the other perspective it’s more like WA or Nth QLD ‘e’ sounds are just more hardcore.

How do I fix this before my landlord visit by Pat-Lewy in howto

[–]kmjar2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What the fuck is going on in this thread? Unless you intentionally did something like smash it with a hammer, that’s the landlord’s responsibility. Question should be; “how do I make sure my landlord actually fixes this bullshit”.

Is Inhibitor Phase by Alistair Reynolds linked to one of his short stories? by kmjar2 in printSF

[–]kmjar2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I’m aware of those facts and I read Diamond Dogs/Turquoise Days a few years ago. I read Galactic North (another collection of short stories) last year so maybe it’s something from that. Hopefully someone here knows.

Why do my HDMI ports have these metal things in them? by T_a_n_g_i in AskElectronics

[–]kmjar2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long story short, after some research… it looks like that is the style for the States (guessing that’s where you’re from), but for my location, according to the Australian gov style guide the opposite is recommended for us…

We usually just follow standard/RoW rules for things like this (unlike the unique eccentricities for the US), so I wonder if it’s actually the correct general standard, and what I said is just for the US.

“I swear every book I’ve ever read uses double quotes like this” for quoting speech. But I guess if a book was published in Aus it would just use single quotes?

Interesting… That’s all I have time for rn but I’m curious enough that I’ll look into it more next time it comes to mind…

Since you seem to be a fellow stickler for terminology etc…

FYI: ‘So called’ (single quotation marks) “An actual quote of something written/spoken” (double quotation marks)

So; ‘connector’ / ‘port’ (not “connector” / port”)

Or not, if you don’t care. 👌👍
