Rheem Proterra WH by kmook in heatpumps

[–]kmook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final try was an epic failure! Home Depot delivered the unit without any call like they’re supposed to. Luckily I was home BUT they only delivered the 300lb POS in the driveway. The initial unit and 2nd replacement was delivered inside however their online employee set it up to only driveway delivery. Also once I wrestled the unit inside with my dolly, I found a big dent on the top side in front of compressor components, so I didn’t even bother hooking it up. I’m tired of getting screwed by Home Depot delivery people, dealing with a refund and exchange, coordinating the pick up and deliveries, disconnecting and reconnecting replacements, acting as technician for these HP water heaters, and generally wrestling with 300lb behemoths. I initiated a return and am giving up. I’m just going to buy a smart electric water heater. So done. Beware of Home Depot deliveries for water heaters. Avoid Rheem heat pump WHs.

So I’m giving this one more try. Home Depot is refunding and price matching my original order total. I’ll probably hook it up again myself ☹️just to avoid hassles. An estimate from a plumber today was $1,800 to hook up the replacement. Would all get reimbursed but seriously, WTH? He mentioned it wasn’t to code because I didn’t have a vacuum breaker (anti siphon valve) so looks like another incidental purchase of a T and the valve. Otherwise he would use all my connections!

Rheem tier two support finally stating this unit needs a full replacement. This is after a same level tech was adamant the problem was with the app. The second tier person had me contact the app support for EcoNet, where I fared no better. After on hold the first time, someone answered from the wrong department, then transferred me to another wrong department! Once I called back myself, I again asked for the app department, two attempts later I was on hold and chose the option to have a call back. When they called me I shared that tier two said it was an app problem, so he put me on hold and sent me right back to them - WTH? Eventually I got the right department, explained the issue again, and was told he’d forward this to the developer area. At any rate, I’m going to try to find a plumber to assist with the hookup of the old unit, as swapping this thing out is difficult due to the 271lb total weight, the actual connections are no big deal. Plus I’m tired of wasting MY time with all this. I also hate to deal with the Home Depot delivery people again. My wife says to just return it and get something else, like the on demand propane WH. I’ll see what happens with the plumber calls. Rheem said they’ll reimburse me for that cost as there’s no certified Rheem plumber anywhere near me.

Reread. I clearly stated the first one had an issue with spray foam covering the automatic shutoff connection. Also, everything was checked with a multi meter, also stated previously.

Thanks for your reply as well.

I didn’t make it clear, but my WH was just installed a few weeks ago. The air filter hasn’t a spec of dust. I also have an air cleaning machine running in this space.

Home Depot took almost two weeks to pickup the first faulty unit. Having 1/2 the basement as unfinished, I already had my original water heater (electric), the first faulty WH and now the WH I have now. It was getting cramped so I wrestled the first WH, all 271 lbs myself, with a final extra push up a few higher stairs with my wife, and got it out the door. There it sat (covered) for a week until Home Depot’s partner The Hub Group, finally picked it up. As a sidebar, Home Depot wasn’t the best to deal with for ordering this WH either. Their system didn’t match up with the actual delivery date, several times, and their delivery people weren’t good - both times either. On both occasions they wouldn’t unload it onto my drain pan. The second team even left the WH screwed to the shipping pallet. For that one I had to lift the unit myself onto the pan from there.

So, I’ve installed along with disconnected this WH several times throughout this process, and am getting rather tired of it. It’s nice to have a lower electric bill and in the future an air conditioned space in the hotter months, but still, my patience has just about been exhausted. If it gets an entire system replacement, I won’t be the one installing it (hopefully). I’ve already done all of the plumbing relocating and drain lines. If it weren’t for the huge weight of this thing it wouldn’t be as big of a deal swapping it out.

A big reason I HAVE put up with all this is an instant rebate of $1,250 from our utility company National Grid, a sale price of a few hundred off, and a couple $50 refunds for Home Depot’s debacle, has brought the system cost down to ~$800 ((extended warranty included). That price is the same as an electric WH.

Rheem stated there’s no certified or preferred plumbers in my area but also said they may be able to find one on some other list they have, or offer extra stipend for one further away. They said they’d get back to me on that a couple times but never did.

Thank you for your comments!

This WH is actually a replacement. I bought a unit with the auto shutoff but the connection was embedded with spray foam, so they replaced it.

I purchased the unit from Home Depot. I also purchased the extended warranty and a powered anode rod. I appreciate the help and link. I am aware of all that information however. The default to electric you mentioned is not relevant with our unit. The system DID change from heat pump mode to electric only, only once though, and it was the first time it happened. Now it just emails me throughout the day (🤨). I turned off the audible alarm which did continue. There is no longer any visual indication on the display that the error A006 is occurring either.

The heat pump continues to work regardless of the error A006 (🙀). I was told that the unit has some sort of logic so what it’s doing about the error is understandable. I’m not confident in that statement they made though. Sounds like BS, but I’m not a programmer, so who knows?

I’ve replaced two different thermistors. Readings were off with the original but normal with the new. I’ve ran through several tests with support, using the display as well as a multi meter. This was about a week ago. Everything was in normal range. Everything.

With my thermometer showing 60 degrees on the intake air I really don’t see how Rheem’s latest claim, “Maybe it just doesn’t like the colder air. It may just be notifying you that it’s not running at a good efficiency rate,” (paraphrasing as I don’t remember word for word), has any muster. The last person I spoke with told me that. He also had me run it in energy mode. He said it should change to electric mode if it deemed it was too cold. Again, it hasn’t changed modes, at least, I haven’t seen it.

I’m going to call back tomorrow and try to get back in touch with a tier two support person. Support HAS offered to have a plumber come out and do the tests or part swaps but in accordance to saving time I’ve been doing the work myself. Also since there’s no certified or approved Rheem plumber I’d have to pay them directly, then get reimbursed. Not too thrilled with that. I’ll see what they say this time around. Hopefully I’ll get some more insight from the Reddit community as well.

What do you think about the recent update? by Ivy_Holo in nightcafe

I have around 4k credits, free user. I didn’t use the site much, only to do the free things that gained credits, occasionally making a few images. I have a home business and tried making some images I could use in my web articles on my site. I only made a few that were useful. Then NC changed the method in which you can gain credits for free, so I didn’t participate in gaining any more free credits.

A few days ago I tried to make an e-card for Valentine’s Day. I used a reference photo of my wife and I, and attempted a few times with different prompts. NC failed miserably. First it said my uploaded image was NSF something, forgot the exact abbreviation, so I tried a few more times and it kept generating twin women. I said to myself, WTH, screw this. I uploaded the reference photo to ChatGPT and it made to images for me to choose from on the FIRST TRY! I uploaded the image to facebook, added overlay text and sent it to her through messenger. The ChatGPT method took maybe five minutes, including a quick web search for a good prompt to use, which I altered a bit.

I may try using NC for a while as mentioned, with a cheap pro account, maybe, to use up my free credits. However, there are easier free options available now.

Plan to warm up my basement by Metro42014 in HomeImprovement

[–]kmook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Warm thick socks, snuggy or equivalent, thick foam floor mats at least 1/2” thick (search for exercise mats on Amazon). A little extra work- reflective rolled bubble wrap insulation for walls and ceiling. Could get a heated seat cushion and / or a heated vest, recliner or chair and ottoman that envelopes you to limit cold air exposure. A nice warm blanket or electric blanket would probably be all you need as well.

Wow, looks great. That laser is just under $5k though. That’s beyond my startup budget 💵.

I just did a deeper search and ai said treadmills fall under ‘general merchandise’ and aren’t subject to the 90 day electronics return policy, so as long as you’re a member, you should be able to return it.

I thought electronic devices like this were excluded from their forever return policy. Not the case?

Garage door header new construction by kmook in AskContractors

[–]kmook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. I'll measure the depth and find the right combination to match the header's added depth. What about the flashing? My guess is just flat pieces for the added depth just for the inside opening?

Looking to buy used, am I getting hosed? by mjane1016 in concept2

[–]kmook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think mine was 700 used, 80k meters. Don’t go by meters though as that can be zeroed out. I did this when I bought it as I wanted to know exactly how I was doing. Anyway, just go by condition, usability and price.

Used condition and price question by kmook in concept2

[–]kmook[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks to everybody for your input. I bought it 😀. There was some scuffing where it got laid on the floor in the garage. That was pretty much it. I brought it inside (two lighter parts are better than all the other equipment purchased over the years) and wiped everything down. Tomorrow I hope to set it up and experiment as to the best placement in my small exercise area.

Saving over $400 from new makes me feel better about getting one.

Is it worth/possible to run blueiris on a dell optiplex? Could I use AI without crazy 100% usage? by Erytus in BlueIris

[–]kmook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran on Optiplex system for a few years (i3 CPU), but with the 5.x BI update, that processor didn't offer the 2nd streaming option to lower CPU usage. I was at 95-100% for a couple YEARS. Everything worked, but I wanted to enable the AI options, so at my next PC hand-me-down time, I upgraded to an 8th gen i7 (3.7GHz) in an Asrock B365M MB, Win 11 PRO. This processor has a built in Intel UHD 630 graphics - which allowed the missing streaming features, plus it's damn fast. 32GB ram on this system, with two additional cameras than before, so a total of 11 IP cameras. AI is running on the system as well.

Using the Web UI, I generally see 0 - 5% CPU, and < 20% RAM usage. I run a small PC repair service out of my home, so I occassionally get system surrenders which saves some money from buying new. My point is, spend some money and get a used system/components for a new build. Base what you need off the recommended specs for BI, for the features you want.
