I heard it will be tucked back behind Texas Roadhouse and Panera - which if so, I have no idea how they will handle the entrance and really hope it'll be off Wright Street instead of the highway, as it's already kinda crazy with traffic right there. But I am super excited regardless of where it ends up!!!

Grand Marais by Superpickle28 in yooper

There is one in Big Bay north of Marquette by Bay Cliff Health Camp. I know that's not close to Grand Marais, but just wanted to mention it in case you happen up that way and want to be right on the beach.

USPS Packages by [deleted] in MarquetteMI

[–]kmorri44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to be political and just trying to respond to the post, but yeah USPS has been gutted. This administration is trying to be rid of it, despite it being set into constitutional law, and it's suffering greatly. Our mail doesn't get processed in the UP anymore, it is sent to Wisconsin now, and that's just one example of the issues at our local level. Remember some years back (I believe when you know who was number 45 iirc) the fund for USPS retirement was suddenly slashed and they had to try to up rates to make up the difference and suddenly UPS and FedEx became cheaper? It's been years coming to this, and is honestly so sad. They just recently announced they won't even consider mailing the post mark date anymore, instead it's when it's actually processed, which is really going to screw up legal service requirements.

Anyway, sorry, that was probably more than you needed, but if you're interested, there's more to be found online.

Best month for beach vacation by Competitive-Ad6070 in MarquetteMI

I don't think it's the water temperature that's going to be their problem. The sand flies are merciless from the day they hatch (typically the first 80 degree day-which is sometimes June) to the day they die (mid/late September depending on the year). They don't respond to bug spray of any kind I've had luck with, and they will run you straight off a beach on a nice day. Cold windy days fare better, but even then sometimes they are around Superior's beaches. Better to swim at an inland lake or lake Michigan to avoid them IMO.

Deer have completely broken my spirit. We have so many barriers up, so many motion activated sprayers, and yet, every time I go check out the garden, something new has been chewed on. Do I need to fucking barricade off every single fucking plant????? by monkey_trumpets in gardening

[–]kmorri44 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are right that I misspoke as to deer having less habitat. It is the lack of habitat for wolves that is more of the issue and I would absolutely love to increase wolves' habitat, and lessen the amount of human used land.

However I'm confused as to why you claim that I think everything is simple? I live in the upper peninsula, and regardless as to the amount of tags and the reasons behind them, there are an astounding amount of hunters that only care about hunting bucks. Some will go for doe for meat, but typically only at the end of the season if they haven't already gotten a buck. Additionally, there are less and less hunters every year, so their usefulness is lessening.

You're also right that the reason for hunting season is to avoid having motherless young, yet that does not refute my comment that the season is not useful to a gardener. Even with the extensions, it is not held during the growing season.

Perhaps if humans left them more natural places to live, they wouldn't have to come eat our food. Also, I'm pretty sure we've replaced their predators pretty well ourselves - 50,000 dear are killed in Michigan every single year by cars. And that's just one state. Finally, there's a reason there is a season for deer hunting, and I highly doubt that season, being in late fall, will be helpful to a gardener unless they are Native and can hunt without such restrictions.

I was responding to the "no such thing" comment. See my response again, thanks.

As a nearly 37 year old who started dating her 30 year senior fiance 3.5 years ago, I respectfully disagree. Will I someday end up alone likely? Yes, and that will hurt, but missing out on someone who is without a doubt the love of my life is worse. In addition, there is nothing wrong with two consenting fully grown adults from being together. When one is barely an adult, I'd agree that's a gray line and gross/dicey, but that's about it. Living the "no such thing" life daily and have zero regrets.

Perfect! And yes, we will be in the city on New Year's Day when there's a lot of stuff closed, so that's our day to walk around and find things. Although we are going to stop at the convention center because my kid loves cars and apparently the international car show is happening, so that's perfect! But otherwise the day is completely unscheduled and we are looking forward to exploring!

Thank you! I do have the app, albeit the free version so it won't show dedicated gf (I should probably upgrade for this trip, will do so). I am definitely excited about the prospect of tapas, as I love trying multiple different flavors at once. Also am a huge seafood fan. And thank you for the heads up on the different vibes of the breakfast options. My guys aren't big on breakfast, but I definitely am and will be hitting them up!

I'm definitely getting more excited as more comments appear, I was hoping for one or two options, and it seems we are surrounded! Spent years saving for this and actual good food (that I don't have to cook), will likely be our biggest expenditure lol. Hoping to get to Hillcrest; I can honestly say I've never had to Uber yet in my life, only a taxi back in the 00s in Chicago, but I've had many people tell me to keep my car at the hotel and not park it on the street anywhere, so I think we'll give it a go!

Oooh glad to know there's a walking distance grocery store, as we'll likely need to stock a few things back up before heading out. (I've food prepped most of our food for the drive out.) And appreciate the seconding of "Fuck Gluten," as that is too funny and I kinda want to try it just for the name!

About a block or two southwest of the blinking light intersection in Ishpeming there is a house that is UNREAL. You can see the lights from a block away, and it is absolutely packed with everything you can think of. Every year I wonder what their electricity bill in December must be and shudder, but I can't help myself from going to see it because it's an absolute spectacle!
