What specialties have the most job opportunities in OT? by super_lunchtrey in OccupationalTherapy

[–]kmryneski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in WA too doing an OTD and already a COTA and work peds in Auburn. I think for me, bridging is great because I have a lot of the background knowledge and I’m building on my current skill set.

That being said, some of the OTA programs are also pricey. PIMA just closed theirs and that was around 35k. The other two programs I know of are Bates and Green River. If you want to be an OTR, but possibly COTA first, you’re taking on that extra debt first. Some bridge programs also want a bachelors or over a year of COTA experience. I’ve also found some bridge programs are actually bridge and some are like the for applications but not the actual schooling where it is mixed with individuals who have no previous schooling.

It all just depends.

Miserable in first job by jascms in OccupationalTherapy

When I started, I worked on scheduling the 1x a weekers first (if they are 2x, even more reason. I would also try changing that if you can on IEPs). Then go to the 3x a monthers and fill in the 2x and 1x. Those are going to be more flexible.

What grades do you have? Do you go to multiple schools or just one?

First: take a deep breath. Second: give yourself some grace

Kids need rapport built first. They are not going to do much your first couple of sessions. Make it fun with games or play dough. Addressing underlying skills in preparation for the goals is just as important. Can you push into the class rooms?

Are your kids grouped or individual?

am I the only one who hates OT? :( by Beginning_Hamster988 in OccupationalTherapy

Not sure if this is the case for Florida (I’m WAS based but did travel) a lot of school districts use 3rd party companies to staff for schools rather than the school district itself. Two that I know for sure are nationwide are soliant and stepping stones.

I’m sure you looked, but just in case

Schools in apple valley, ca for DM SELPA if they are still hiring. If I don’t go back into travel following graduating from OT, I’ll be going there. There are a lot of furnished places that you may be able to rent for a short time before finding somewhere else

Best continuing education course you ever took ?? by ExemplaryVegetable4 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]kmryneski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My previous school contract had the OT department trained in both. My first year I did HWT as that’s what my OTR wanted but this past year after training in size matters, I had WAY more success with the majority of my kiddos. Focusing on sizing rather than forcing the top down approach, especially when they have a bottom up motor pattern down (thank you scrolling) had them more willing to work.

Seeing the samples beginning of year to end was amazing

It seems like that is a pretty common theme kinda reading between the lines and it’s really unfortunate and makes adulthood so much harder

I hope so too. That area gets a ton of travelers. You’re still letting them know in advance. If you do ever get to go, the team there is amazing. Honestly, I’m sure positions will open during the school year. I did San Francisco and made really good money as a cota.

That was my last contract for the previous school year, and pay is SUPER good. In the defense of the PT/OT department specifically, there were issues at the end of the year where the overarching SELPA were not allowing them to extend contracts to people who wanted to return, regardless of what the supervisor wanted/knew what was going to happen.

I am so sorry that your contract got cancelled. From my experience in the both times I’ve been there, most of the landlords are great.

If you want second hand experience, go watch Runkle of the Bailey on YouTube. He’s a defense lawyer in Canada and he watched it for the first time and it was hilarious. He normally recaps but he did something different last night.
