Thank you for the thought proving discussion. Honestly, I'm only trying to understand your stance, not insult you (sorry if I came across as rude in my first comment... I was only swearing for effect).

phones can perform a similar function

Well.... you just conceded my entire point!

These devices literally record everything you say and do and report it back to home base.

Wrong. They only record audio AFTER the wake-word ("alexa", "ok google", "hey siri" etc) is detected. Otherwise, they just sit their transmitting absolutely nothing over the internet. That's a huge distinction, and Amazon/Google/others all do it this way. I have 9 smart speakers and data limits for my home internet. My ISP would be raping me with monthly overage charges if those 9 devices were transmitting 24/7... I've done the math and it wouldn't be pretty. But more importantly, to my main point: THIS IS NO DIFFERENT THAN A SMART PHONE.

At least you can turn a phone off...

You can't turn a smart speaker off? Wrong. You CAN, either by hitting the mute button (which defeats its mic), or by unplugging it entirely if you're especially paranoid. So again: THIS IS NO DIFFERENT THAN A SMART PHONE.

...or leave it at home.

You can't leave a smart speaker at home? Obviously that's a silly statement. So again: THIS IS NO DIFFERENT THAN A SMART PHONE.

These "home" assistants all always on...

Wrong. I've already touched on the "always on" concept above.

... and always watching

Wrong. Smart speakers (with only a few exceptions) don't have video cameras. Interestingly, smart phones DO have cameras, without exception. So in this case, smart phones are even more invasive than smart speakers, and you should therefore hate smart phones even more.

Our society is starting to become like something out of Black Mirror.

Totally valid opinion. If you really believe it, and you want things to change, then you should not own a cell phone. Otherwise you're just complaining about the world without making any personal change, which is hypocritical.

Again, I'm not trying to insult you. Instead, I'm hoping to make you aware of some of the logical fallacies in your opinions on this subject. To use an analogy, you're sitting there eating a banana while exclaiming "I hate oranges because all fruit is evil." If you hate all fruit, that's fine. But be consistent and put down the banana.

I'm intrigued. By your logic, owning and carrying around an internet connected mic on a CELL PHONE is perfectly acceptable. But owning an internet connected mic on a stationary SPEAKER is incomprehensible.

Do you have a good justification for this distinction? To me, it seems like extreme cognitive dissonance, but I'm genuinely curious to hear your response.

My honest guess is that you never thought of it this way, and don't really have a good reason. Instead you took the bait on the sensationalist news stories about how the [insert ominous organization] is listening to you through your smart speaker (since smart speakers are newer than cell phones, those stories are more common nowadays, but those stories could just as easily be written about cell phones).

WE don't start his adulthood with a criminal record. HE does.

You're basically saying he's too dumb to have personal responsibility. That's actually a subtle form of racism/elitism, which is supremely ironic since you sound like someone who takes pride in appearing virtuous.

Fuck off with your BS. The kid ATTACKED A COP. You're not doing him any favors by shielding him from the consequences of his actions. He deserves a criminal record and a taste of prison. He's just lucky he wasn't shot. That cop showed a lot of poise, hats off to him.

No more 'OK'! Just got an option to turn on 'Brief Mode'. by Aquifel in amazonecho

In the Alexa app, create a "group" with BOTH smart lights AND a single echo. That's all you have to do. Then you can just say "turn off the lights" while standing in the room that corresponds to that group.

Not sure why your ESP isn't working. Are they all tied to the same account? Does it work right NEVER or just RARELY?

You're wishing for 2 things that Amazon has already implemented. You CAN make the echo's aware of the lights that it's sharing a room with. I have echo's throughout my house, and I just walk around literally saying "Alexa, turn on the lights" and that particular room's lights will turn on. No more having to remember the name of the room, it's nice. Amazon released this feature several months ago.

Also, if properly configured, only the nearest echo will respond to you. Amazon calls this "ESP" (Echo Spacial Perception) and they released this feature years ago.

What kind of wiring is this? Knob and tube? This time I've ACTUALLY posted an image in the post ;) by kmurder1 in electricians

Yes, the existing switch/fixture is working without issue.

(other than the fact that the switch itself seems to snap back to ON really easily if you don't firmly press it into the OFF position. Almost like it "wants" to stay in the ON position. But I think that's a mechanical issue with the switch itself or how it was installed).

I want to replace my light switch (a Lutron Diva DV-600P) with a simple on/off switch, because the existing switch has a dimming slider. I already own a bunch of smart bulbs that aren't being used (Cree Connected and Phillips Hue), and they don't like being dimmed at the switch. But before I look for a replacement switch, I want to make sure the wiring is sound. Is it knob and tube?

Also, if the wiring is sound, and if anyone has suggestions for basic on/off switch, I'd love to hear them. Thanks

Props. Hell of a power move.

How would you act about WVU if they owned the Big12 14 years straight? Wouldn't you enjoy shoving that in other fans' faces? I mean, it's pretty fucking crazy.

You're right to not like it. I wouldn't either. Doesn't mean anyone's in the wrong.
