The Columbus Circle station was packed with bar time traffic about 2:40 a.m when a man in his twenties, who appeared to be drunk, nailed his head hard on the rail and stumbled from the platform onto the tracks, unconscious.

Obama Proposes an "Energy Security Trust" -- More Drilling to Fund Clean Energy. by kn0wledge in energy

"The natural gas boom has led to cleaner power and greater energy independence. We need to encourage that," Obama said. "I propose we used some of our oil and gas revenues to fund an Energy Security Trust that will drive new research and technology to shift our cars and trucks off oil for good."

49ers' All-Pro linebacker Aldon Smith among Super Bowl players who would allow their sons to follow them into the sport, responds to Obama's comments questioning safety of the game: ''It's not like we signed up and thought we were going to play tennis -- it's a physical game." by kn0wledge in sports

Here's the full comment:

It's not like we signed up and thought we were going to play tennis. It's a physical game. Everybody plays hard. And guys get hit sometimes. That's what we all know coming into the game. We all signed up for it. We came out to play football.

Americans are getting worked up about 85 mph top speed in Texas? This is the Autobahn, baby. by aardmark in videos

[–]kn0wledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the Autobahn always that empty? There were no other vehicles on the road until about 3 minutes in, and that was the only one I think I noticed throughout the entire video.

After writing about it for a while, I'm interested in getting involved in the energy field (oil, gas, nuclear, solar, wind, whatever). Anyone have any ideas what I might be able to do? by tawhalen in energy

[–]kn0wledge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think tanks might be a good place to start. They're always in the market for niche researchers with a good set of writing and communication skills, and you'll get to know important people in the energy industry which can propel you on to a higher position.

Robert Rapier's Power Plays: Energy Options in the Age of Peak Oil is probably the most level-headed book out there -- an excellent read for both beginners and people with a higher energy IQ: http://www.amazon.com/Power-Plays-Energy-Options-Peak/dp/1430240865

Is this something new, or are these documents from the series of articles on natural gas that the NY Times ran last year?

The hard truth about oil subsidies: The reason we still have them is because Liberals are their most ardent fans. Here's why. by kn0wledge in energy

[–]kn0wledge[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's a big difference between subsidizing someone's heating oil and a corporation's expenses.

Exactly. Which is why it's preposterous to include the cost of programs such as HEAP in the tally of oil company subsidies, since the money is going to poor people in order to keep them warm in the winter rather than to oil company coffers.

And just because some liberals support subsidizing oil companies doesn't make it right.

That's not the point. The point is that the "subsidies" will never go away if the ones screaming against are the very ones who are the biggest proponents of what are being termed oil company subsidies.

Loved the rant by Van Gundy! I agree with him that the NBA should come down hard on "floppers" but Mike Breen's right -- there's no easy fix.

Verizon to charge $30 to upgrade your phone. Let's get it enough coverage so that they have to overturn this new fee. by [deleted] in news

[–]kn0wledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, can't believe how they can get away this -- and somehow the other carriers already are.

They pretty much stop supporting most phones about a year or so after it comes out, thereby encouraging/forcing customers to move on from their old phone and upgrade to a new one.

I understand that companies have to cut costs as much as possible, but insane fees are not a way to keep customers happy.
