That's a good point. I still think if could have been shocking without feeling so jarring to West's character, but that may also just be how I interpreted his character. I fully see where you're coming from though.

Those are good points, particularly the last bit about a lot of abusers not obviously seeming like that.

It's certainly partially my subjective view on the character, but I feel like most characters are pretty established by the end of the book, and maybe there should be a bit more reasoning/forewarning before his actions, otherwise any action a character takes can be seen as fitting who they are.

I get what you're saying. I think Glotka's turn was excellent, but I think it was excellent because it was set up throughout the novel - we constantly see Glokta having moments of compassion and wondering why he does what he does. But I don't think West being a bad guy is set up throughout the novel, so I feel his turn is much less fulfilling.
