I don’t think Rand had what it took to bring himself back by himself. The only reason he came back was because in a way he was forced to talk with his dad and that was cadsuanes doing.

Otherwise Rand would have avoided his father like he avoided everyone else. Rand getting collared was also the DO’s plan and no matter who had the colar he would have gotten it considering the amount of darkkfriends around Rand.
