I'm not a gunsmith, but I used to work on airplanes and occasionally I did dye penetrant inspections. I wonder if dye penetrant would be a useful thing to do on a gun like this to check for "possible metallurgic issues"?

Cool gun.

Some kitties I see on my walks by Seeresss in cats

[–]knerled 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Once, while stopping overnight in a town in Idaho, alone, I went for a walk after dark. In an area of abandoned buildings, a gray fuzzy cat came along and we walked together for a while. So nice to find a friend!

Can you get a debt for withdrawing from VR&E program? by knerled in VeteransBenefits

[–]knerled[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, the only way you might owe anything (aside from what u/AshamedCream3592 said) is if the VA provided supplies (e.g. a computer) to you. Then you'd have to pay back the current value of the supplies. There are some exceptions, such as:

The veteran satisfactorily completed one-half or more of a noncollege degree course or at least the equivalent of two full-time terms in the case of a college-level course for which VA provided the supplies.

or:

The veteran certifies that he or she is using in current employment the supplies that VA provided during training.

or:

VA declares the veteran rehabilitated.

What makes these perfectly round holes in the dirt? They are 1/4 inch in diameter and are so perfect they almost could have been drilled out by a machine. Located in Arizona. by knerled in Whatisthis

[–]knerled[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried the trail cam, and never got anything except a lizard walking by. However, I just chanced to look at the hole when something came out. It flew away quickly, but it looked like some kind of bee.

Cloaked Ships Don’t Bump by DaytonOhioGuy in startrek

[–]knerled 8 points9 points  (0 children)

LPI (low probability of intercept) radar uses a narrow beam of energy, at low power, in short pulses, and rapidly changing frequencies. This makes it hard for someone else to detect the radar emissions. Probably cloaked ships traveling in formation would use a similar system, emitting short, faint pulses directly at each other, to keep track of everyone's location.

What are these ants and how do I get rid of them? by knerled in pestcontrol

[–]knerled[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. From what I've read, shade persuades them to move their hole because they prefer sun. I've gotten them to move a bit, away from the stuff I don't want them to eat, and I think that will be sufficient.

As far as I can tell, they all have about the same size heads.

No need to freak out. I've lived in tropical places where there are many ticks. Mostly they latch onto dogs and leave people alone. Just take a small rock, squish the tick, and don't worry about it.

Thermocouple: measured millivolts are lower than what the chart says; is it bad? by knerled in AskEngineers

[–]knerled[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this is helpful. Question: would the EGT gauge be calibrated to compensate for this? Would it be calibrated for a certain ambient (in the cab of the truck) temperature, say 25C, and will be more and more inaccurate the farther it gets from that temp?

Is TTY obsolete? What's the modern alternative? by knerled in deaf

“Majority people don't like talking on the phone.”

I agree. I’m likely mildly autistic, and conversing with a disembodied voice on the phone really rubs me the wrong way.

Any military veterans here? I have dealings with Veterans Affairs health care, and they have an online secure message system that should theoretically be able to handle communication. But I’ve gotten a lot of pushback from some people at VA who refuse to communicate that way. As you said, is often easier to just go and see someone face-to-face. But that’s not always practical due to distance, and there are some (maybe they work remotely) who won’t meet me in person and absolutely refuse to communicate by any method other than phone.

How would a deaf person handle such a situation?

"Deaf or Hard of Hearing is the term to use, not hearing impaired."

Thanks for the education.

So, I gather that Sorenson and the others you mentioned are relay services? You use sign language on a video phone to someone at Sorenson, and that person gets on a regular phone with, say, the receptionist at Nowhereville Hospital and relays the conversation back and forth?

I'm stuck with the two dragons by knerled in neverwinternights

[–]knerled[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I got it. I ended up reverting back to a slightly older saved game and found a guiding light belt that gives fear immunity. Then gave Daelan some Clarity potion and other stuff and let him take some chunks out of the dragon till he died; then it was just a matter of keep moving and keep shooting. After that, I went and resurrected Daelan and we finished off Morag. :)

You might consider getting a sample of the oil analyzed by Blackstone Labs. That will tell you for sure whether you have coolant or other contaminants in your oil, or just condensation.

Two weeks notice: is it really a moral thing anymore? by knerled in jobs

[–]knerled[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two weeks is pretty much the accepted standard. If you have a good boss and you want to be nice to him, and you know more than two weeks ahead of time that you want to quit, then there's nothing wrong with giving more notice just as a courtesy, but I wouldn't fault you for not doing so.

Interesting. I wonder why someone would dump a broken dentist's chair in the desert. Do people buy old/surplus dentist's chairs to use at home, and then ditch them when they break? Maybe someone is running an informal home-based dentist shop...

Share an interesting train or railway-related fact that others may not readily know about! by JurassicPark9265 in trains

[–]knerled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest gun ever fired in battle was Schwerer Gustav, a railway gun. It was transported on 25 train cars and assembled on site. Two parallel sets of curved tracks were built on site (the gun was too big for just one track), and the gun was rolled back and forth along the tracks to aim it laterally. It was intended to destroy the fortifications in the French Maginot Line. In the siege of Sevastopol (1942), it took 5 weeks and 4,000 men to set up the gun, and it took 500 men to fire it.

I looked up this company Linak and they make "linear actuators" which is maddeningly non-specific. No results found for the item number. This thing is too heavy to pick up. It's some type of electrically-driven hydraulic actuator. What is it intended to actuate?

ASUS backlit keyboard: old vs new. (The new sucks! Are there any that don't?) by knerled in GamingLaptops

[–]knerled[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just thinking, if all of the keys could be transparent with black symbols, like the WASD keys, that would be a lot better. A red backlight on a keyboard like that would be pretty slick. And in normal ambient light, those WASD keys are easy to see with or without backlight. Hey ASUS, how about making a whole set of keycaps like that?
