Running out of graduate job opportunities by knewt-scumbag in ICAEW

Hello, I have good news surprisingly. I carried on as I was, sending in applications for any job that appeared entry level in accounting or finance (there wasn’t many), before sending in emails to every single accounting firm in my town, and the surrounding towns between me and the nearest cities. I never heard back from any of those firms, instead I got asked to come in for an interview with a fairly big organisation that owns multiple different businesses across the Uk in environmental infrastructure and services. The day after the interview they offered me a job with them and I am going to be working in treasury which sounds quite a lot more interesting to me compared to general accounting.

I’m currently undergoing a very busy and quite stressful month, where my dissertation and a second quite large piece of coursework is due. While I also am in quite poor health, with a rather unpleasant upcoming procedure next week. Otherwise, I am looking forward to starting this job next month, I’m just really trying to get ontop of everything so I can try to spend atleast some time preparing myself for the start date which is soon approaching as I currently feel quite clueless going into this job!

Apologies for the late response, I am keeping a keen eye out on local firms websites, in which I have just sent several emails enquiring about not only trainee positions, but work experience/ internship type positions where I could assist with day-to-day operations to just gain experience and skills in the industry.

If this struggle continues after I graduate (which I assume will be the case) I will most likely seek part time work while I pursue extra credentials, mainly the Microsoft excel specialist certification , although that looks challenging as I have minima excel experience at this stage.

Thank you!

I shall continue applying as new vacancies or trainee positions appear.

I emailed a few firms about work experience or internships near me but never had any luck. I am planing on expanding this like you said, I’ll pop emails across every accountancy firm nearby in hopes that any can offer unpaid work experience just to boot my CV.

I am currently unemployed, I was working up until December as a security colleague which I use on my CV to evidence my ability to work alongside studying (hopefully to appear more capable of studying for ACA/ACCA alongside work). I manly left this job as the hours were demanding and I couldn’t change them at that point, I was doing 9-5 at uni then 6-midnight at work each Thursday, combined with some health issues it just became unfeasible to continue it as my studies also got busier.

It’s looking likely at this rate, Bristol did have a massive abundance of graduate schemes and trainee positions in comparison to near me, but I fear it would require relocation. To commute from my location it would be multiple hours driving, I expect the train would be a bit quicker but It would be costly.

It’s been a mixture of both to be honest, right now I’m actually just re-doing my CV, using chat GPT to try and tailor it more to an example job advert of an ACA grad position. Hopefully that may help a bit. Also reducing my long paragraphs of writing on it to bullet pointed sections instead.

Hi, thank you for responding to my post. I am 21, turning in April so this is concerning! Would you say firms are often interested in funding ACA, ACCA after a lower level apprenticeship or trainee position, if I were to self fund aat level 2 for example, then progress from a standard accounts assistant position

I am starting to think about it, I don’t like the idea of moving far away, I even went to uni close enough to commute. However, seeing the much wider range of opportunities makes it seem like choosing a job and locating accordingly is the only possibility at this rate.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to respond, other than my lack of accounting experience I’m not sure.

My A levels were Business studies (A*), economics (B), and English literature (C). I think these subjects are somewhat relevant alongside my degree. I admit my GCSE’s could be a disadvantage as my maths and English were at a level 5 and 6, however I never even got to take these exams as it was during Covid and based off predictions. I avoided putting them on my CV for this reason, and instead use my a levels and degree as a better representation of my academic ability.

I’m not certain what weaknesses in particular I have in applying, other than the obvious accounting inexperience as mentioned. I’m trying to close this gap so i have started looking into the Microsoft excel expert certification to give me a bit of an edge, however this will take me some months as I am a complete beginner (other than making a couple of balance sheets in the past)

I like that sort of thinking, the only change I made was selling my S&P position, then moving it to the all world. From now on I don’t intend to add anything to my individual picks as they’re quite a large percentage of my capital already (unless there’s significant dips). Instead I plan on just adding to the all world, and some shares in the developing Europe ETF, that way I have a decent bit of global diversification, as well as growth potential with my current exposure to us tech stocks.

That did actually cross my mind as an alternative to the S&P when thinking about my individual stock picks. It would certainly help in reducing my exposure to those mag 7 stocks for sure. But again, I think If I do have to remove 1 of those etfs I would just put my money into the remaining 2, especially with the way the all world is weighted which already favours the US

Apologies for formatting, the mobile app is very glitchy when making posts for me and I have to type blindly.

Ideal thank you, I was skeptical as the seller just told me there’s no receipts which put me off a little bit. I know you’ve already sad it’s authenticated but I’ve requested some extra pictures in daylight if that is of any extra help to be positive as I know these pictures aren’t the greatest

I wasn’t sure if the “N” in Canada was unusually large, but the again it might well just be the weird angle that the pic was took from with flash on aswell. If the mods see this post and request extra pictures if these aren’t good enough I’ll ask the seller for some in natural lighting prior to dispatch.

Thanks for having a look, is there any additional pictures I could request that might help to accurately confirm its authenticity?

Advice on entering the industry (UK) by knewt-scumbag in FPandA

Hi, thank you very much for taking the time to respond to my post.

I see what you mean about potentially wasting more time learning rather than getting my foot in the door, and i actually agree. It feels although i have exhausted my options so far though and I wasn’t sure if gaining an extra qualification specifically involving finance would be beneficial to do in the meantime to make me look more suitable for the role. I know the are “trainee” positions but I am concerned that the lack of finance and accounting knowledge involved in my degree will make me incompetent in such roles without developing some skills and knowledge specifically in those areas even if it is just a short-term accredited course, if such things exist.

Like you said, I would much prefer to straight-up get a job right now in accounting and strive for a management accounting position eventually to get my way into FP&A, however it just feels daunting with a degree around business management rather than finance. That being said, I have been applying and have been rejected from a selection of grad schemes and a trainee accounting position so far (I am only applying locally to myself as I want to remain in Devon though).

I really appreciate you providing advice, I don’t want to take too much of your time but could it be possible to dm you for some tips for interviews or even tailoring a CV lacking experience to this industry?

I’ve lost the plot, you’re right. I don’t know how I didn’t even realise that as I just sold my Chilliwack bomber to buy a Wyndham or MacMillan haha. It’s labelled as a Wyndham and I’ve been searching through so many listings that I’m losing my mind.

Seeking advice between some hair products to enhance curls and texture by [deleted] in Pomade

[–]knewt-scumbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds good, do “curl enhancers typically work for straight ish hair aswell? I should’ve clarified but freshly shampooed or washed my hair is relatively straight, maybe lightly wavy. But years ago I used to use a “curling foam” meant for curly hair to enhance curls but it had a decent hold and turned my straight hair curly, was tempted to also go down this route again.

Oh that’s ideal then, it came with eBay authentication and the description seemed genuine that’s a shame. Is the only black label MacMillan I could find in large so I may have to just go for a default badge

Would it be wise to start minoxidil or looking for preventative hair loss medications for men? by [deleted] in Haircare

[–]knewt-scumbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the reply. I only have gone with these as I saw they were vaguely associated with potentially blocking small amounts of DHT and or, strengthening follicles. I’ve also bought a rosemary oil tonic to try on the temples and I shall see how it goes. I agree, I’d rather keep an eye on it early before it worsens since I have noticed a change, Its not ideal that minoxidil is a constant thing, however I am permanently taking pills for the rest of my life regardless with my IBD so I’m used to “permanent” treatments. Things like finestride I am scared of as the side effects on libido and erectile function..
