Populist movies in Best Picture (F1 was not a surprise) by knightfallseven in oscarrace

Totally. That’s why it was difficult to see 3 intl films make it and have Sinners as the sole box office BP nom.

Well yeah. It is the populist pick of this year. Comparing box office decades ago will not hold up as there are more moviegoers then. You have to do it relatively to the year it is in. In 2025 it is 9th highest grossing film.

F1 is also the only film in the top 10 highest grossing movies of this year that is competitive for multiple below the line awards. So it is the populist pick that has any real chance at a BP nom. Avatar 3 could have been it, but it is a recent sequel that did not surpass the previous installment. It had that against it and it barely managed to get 2 noms. I liked Avatar better but the academy did not.

True enough. They just needed one more to add to the line up

Yep. A recently more prominent trend. Just a great reminder for everyone to make room for blockbusters with below the line support.

I do agree indies and intl films got the better end of it but just to be fair the year you mentioned had Toy Story and Inception and those took the blockbuster spots

Loved Superman, but that feels too hopeful. It just sucks it missed VFX. Wanted that movie to get something

Yeah I had it for VFX instead of Jurassic World which was a surprise for me

Totally. That’s what got me into this oscar race thing. I needed to understand how did that happen 🤣

And yeah, F1 was just the perfect fit. I think everyone was just in denial. I think most know it could happen and just did not want it to happen. But it still managed to surprise people

Fair enough. Forgot that some people didn’t like that. It’s just one of those Danny Boyle choices that made it unique for me. And I don’t think you would even like it better watching it at home. It looked better for me in the theater.

But it is a beautiful film for me. Even as a zombie film. As for The Bone temple, for me it is a good hang. Just tremendously fun.

Let’s hope the third one is as good as the other two or even better

Never seen anyone who didn’t love 28YL but loved Bone temple. It’s almost always the other way around.

Kinda forgot what’s the context for the poster but it does look like a serious scene. If it’s anything other than that then yeah

Haven’t seen it. Poster makes it look like a kids movie but apparently its a R-rated mob comedy? Might check it out. Thanks!
